Owning a pool gives you a great way to exercise and relax, but it also takes a fair bit of work to keep it clean and hygienic.
Over time, you may find that the pH of your pool water decreases, gradually becoming more and more acidic.
This is caused by a range of different factors, from rain water to leaves and other pieces of debris falling into the water.
If your water gets too acidic, then it wont be good for your pool, and it certainly wont be fun to swim in.

After two days and two nights of keeping a close watch over the process, I took the reading in the morning. Total alkalinity in my example read 101 ppmÃ¢not bad at all. The pH was stable at 7.4. Remember that even if the natural aeration process is not complete, pH levels will not likely rise above the recommended levels because the alkalinity is within range and no pH increaser was used in this process.

When To Use Baking Soda

Does Low Ph Affect Chlorine
Low pH has a huge impact on chlorine. Chlorine needs a pH of at least 7 to work properly, so if the pH in a pool is below this level, it will have severely reduced effectiveness.
This means that even though you may be adding enough chlorine for effective cleaning and disinfection purposes, low pH levels can increase bacteria counts dramatically which could lead to skin irritation or eye damage.
To avoid these drawbacks, keep your water at an acceptable pH range by monitoring regularly with a test kit and adjusting accordingly when necessary.
Using Baking Soda To Clear Cloudy Pool Water
There are a few causes of cloudy pool water, including:

Once the alkalinity of your pool water becomes low, it is no longer safe to swim in it. Low alkalinity can affect your chlorine sanitizer and make it ineffective.

How To Use Baking Soda
When testing the pool pH, make sure to check the total alkalinity as well. If the pH is low, the alkalinity is likely to be low as well, and the amount needed to raise it influences how much baking soda to add.
If you buy the baking soda from a pool supplier, the directions on the bottle will tell you how much to apply based on your pools existing alkalinity concentration and volume. Make certain that you purchase a enough quantity of the product. For most applications, 10 pounds or more is required.
With test strips or a test kit, determine the pH and total alkalinity of the water. If the pH is less than 7.2 and also the total alkalinity is less than 80 ppm, add baking soda. If the pH is low but somehow the alkalinity is within the acceptable range, boost the pH using soda ash.
