When To Backwash A De Pool Filter
You should backwash your DE pool filter about once a month during pool season. In addition to the regular schedule, youll want to perform additional backwashing if:
- Youve been running your pool filter for 48 hours straight. This can cause a pressure build-up, even if the filter grids look clean.
- Higher-than-normal amounts of debris have entered your pool water. A heavy summer storm that washes sediment into your pool or a large potted plant that tips over into the pool can overtax the DE system.
- Your pool has had a heavy swimmer load for an extended period of time. If youve had houseguests for several days or your kids had friends over every day of the week, youll need to clear out the remnants from all the extra sunscreen, beauty products, and even sweat that will clog up your DE filter.
Pro tip: At least once during each pool season and anytime your filter pressure remains high after backwashing take the grids out of your DE filter and clean them more thoroughly.

Why Does My Filter Pressure Rise Very Quickly Even After Backwashing
- D.E. filters filter the water down to 1-3 microns, every time the water passes through the filter. Maintain a balanced clear pool and this will reduce incidents of rapid pressure rise. One possibility is that the filter grids or Flex tubes are clogged with minerals or oils. You should clean your grids once a year, or season, with a degreaser and if needed an acid bath. Minerals and oils embed themselves in the fabric of the filter and reduce the available surface area used for filtering.
- If too little DE is added during pre-coat, debris and particles will embed in the fabric. Cleaning with a high-pressure hose, NOT A POWER WASHER, may be needed to remove the grids. If cleaning does not work, then replacement is the only option.

How Does A De Filter Work
A D.E. filter uses diatomaceous earth as the filter media. What is diatomaceous earth? Its the fossilized remains of diatoms, a kind of aquatic creature with a skeleton high in silica. D.E. powder is sold at most pool and hardware retailers, so its easy to find and its affordable, too.
When D.E. powder is added to the filter, it attaches to the grid or fingers inside the filter, creating a D.E. cake. And this cake, along with the filter grids inside, helps filter out fine particles in your pool water. This makes a D.E. filter the most powerful filtration system, compared to sand or cartridge filters.
Over time, the filter element will get dirty and contaminants will build up in the D.E. powder. And unfortunately, cleaning a D.E. filter requires multiple steps compared to other types.
To clean a D.E. filter, youll need to remove the D.E. grid and spray it down with a garden hose or soak it in muriatic acid to remove oil, minerals, and dirt.
Youll also need to regularly backwash the D.E. filter to help remove the buildup thats accumulated inside. That means reversing the flow of water inside the filter, which loosens the collected dirt and debris to leave the tank. That water is then sent out of your pool using the filters waste port.
Finally, when youre replacing your grids or backwashing the filter, youll need to add more D.E. powder. This is added directly through the skimmer line where it then travels into your filter.

Add DE powder to the filter to replace the amount that was backwashed out. Uncover the skimmer closest to the pump and filter, and slowly pour the needed amount into the skimmer while the system is running. The powder will travel through the plumbing and effectively recharge the filter.
