How to use Borax to Raise the pH in your Pool – How much Borax to Add

After two days and two nights of keeping a close watch over the process, I took the reading in the morning. Total alkalinity in my example read 101 ppmânot bad at all. The pH was stable at 7.4. Remember that even if the natural aeration process is not complete, pH levels will not likely rise above the recommended levels because the alkalinity is within range and no pH increaser was used in this process.

How To Lower Alkalinity In A Pool

If the alkalinity of the water is too high, i.e. more than 120 ppm, its an easy fix to lower the alkalinity of the water.

First, make sure the water pump is on and take a current pH measurement.

Add one quart of muriatic acid or 2 pounds of dry acid at a time around the perimeter of the pool.

Let the acid mix in the water for about an hour, then test the water again. Maintain a water pH of about 7 and keep adding pool acid in small increments until the correct alkalinity level is reached.

Once the alkalinity level is correct, allow the pH to climb naturally by circulating the water.

Raising Your Pool Ph With Sodium Carbonate

Raise your pool pH with soda ash, also called sodium carbonate.

Read the instructions on the label, as different manufacturers might contain different percentages of sodium carbonate, although a container of soda ash should simply be 100% sodium carbonate.

Determine how much you need to add, based on your test results. I recommend adding only 3/4 of what is recommended and retest later until you are comfortable with the effect of adding chemicals to your pool. The reason is you want to avoid adding too much and end up having to lower the pH.

The instructions might say to dilute the soda ash first. Follow the product instructions for dilution if this is the case.

Get down as close to the water as you can, as the wind will easily blow the powder into the air instead of your pool.

Try to add the powder into your pool at the water return jet sight. This is where the water comes into the pool. Avoid adding the powder where at the water inlet sights, such as the skimmer area. You want to spread the dry acid around in the pool as much as possible, but not into areas that would be pulled directly into the pool pump and filter.

The soda ash will dissolve quickly, so there should be little to no need to spread the powder around in the water with a pole brush.

Maintaining a balanced swimming pool pH is a vital part of swimming pool maintenance. Not only does the proper pH protect your metal fittings and the walls of your pool, but the right pH range is also what makes swimming in the water pleasant instead of an itchy, burning trial. The correct range for a swimming pool is a pH of 7.4 to 7.8. If you are testing your pool and the pH registers as too low, try the techniques below to raise your pH.

1. Check Your Reagents

The first thing to check when your test indicates a low pH is whether your test reagents are still good. Reagents should be replaced every year and should never be mixed between test kits. If your kit is old, try getting a new one and testing again.

2. Add Soda Ash

If your pH is still low, try adding sodium carbonate, commonly called soda ash. Never add more than two lbs of soda ash per 10,000 gallons of water in your pool in any single treatment. Distribute the soda ash over the whole of the pool surface, starting in the deep end. Make sure that the pump is circulating to distribute the water and then wait an hour or so before testing again. If the pH is still too low after an hour, you can add more soda ash.

How To Increase Ph In The Pool

There are any number of commercial chemical products that you can use to raise the pH of your pool. Usually they have brand names that involve the word pH Increaser, Up, or Raise.

Whatever their trade name, all these products are based on sodium carbonate otherwise known as soda ash. Be aware, though: sodium carbonate isnt the same thing as sodium bicarbonate, AKA baking soda.

Make sure that the pump and filter system is running.

Test your water in order to determine the current pH and, therefore, how much you need to raise the pH back to the desired 7.4-7.6 range.WORD of WARNING: pool test kits and testing strips typically only measure down to a pH of 6.8. So, if your pool waters pH is showing a reading 6.8, the actual reading may be even lower. Calculate how much sodium carbonate you need to add. As a general rule 175 grams of sodium carbonate will raise the pH of an average backyard pool of 32 m2, or approximately 42,000 litres of water, by 0.1.

Work Out The Amount Of Chemicals You Need

To work this out you will need to know the approximate volume of water in your pool. You can read this post to find out how to calculate the volume of water.

If the volume is 10,000 gallons, and you need to raise the pH by 0.4, then you will need to add around 12 oz of soda ash or 3-4 lbs of baking soda.

I suggest that you always add in stages add some, wait a few hours and retest. Add more if necessary.
