The Problem With Pool Paint

How to paint your pool with LUXAPOOL Epoxy Pool Paint – Painting the Pool

Epoxy pool paint and rubber pool paint are not compatible with water which creates a very serious problem for meeting the application guidelines for these products. Concrete pool shells will hold water for days after you pump them out in all but the hottest and most arid climates. In many areas even after draining the pool you will require 7 or more days of completely dry weather in order for the pool shell to dry. In theory the pool shell should be moisture tested, for example by duct taping a square of plastic to the floor in the deep end. If the plastic fogs up then there is still too much moisture in the concrete to apply the paint. This concern for moisture caused delamination is one of the main reasons why epoxy pool paint is less friendly as a do-it-yourself project. The next big problem with pool paint is that there are at least 3 fairly common types and you need to know which one you have to be able to paint over it. If you guess wrong then you will have a huge and costly mess on your hands. As a pool owner you will not likely be able to tell the difference between rubber or epoxy paint even with doing field testing with paint chips and different solvents. The only actual way to know would be to send in paint chips to pool paint manufacturers for analysis – which some will do.This brings us to the $10,000 question – is there any pool paints that are easy to use and are compatible with unknown previous paints? Yes, there is one.

Epoxy Swimming Pool Paint

Epoxy swimming pool paint offers the longest lifespan at about 6 to 8 years. It is the thickest pool paint product, best as smoothing rough surfaces, filling in hairline cracks and any small pots that may arise. It also is the ONLY paint suited for fiberglass pools, saltwater pools and spas.

There are a range of colours to choose from and minimal maintenance is required, making it a popular option with many homeowners. However, Epoxy requires a lot more work when mixing/preparing the paint and curing can take up to 7 days. As such the price is typically higher than other paint products available.

How Long Does Pool Paint Last

There are many different factors that will play into answering the question: how long does pool paint last?

For instance, the paint comes in at least three different types. Each variety differs in service life expectations, application requirements, and costs.

For the most part, you can expect your pool paint to last anywhere from two to five years.

Epoxy will last you the longest: five to seven years. Rubber based paint has a little bit shorter lifespan. And, you can count on acrylic paint lasting two to four years.

Of course, these numbers can vary drastically depending on whether a professional does the paint job

Also, if the new layer of paint is applied to a pool that already has several layers, it will not last as long.

You can extend the life of the paint job by sandblasting the previous paint layers before applying the new layer, but this usually costs a couple thousand dollars.

The Best Pool Paint By Surface

Certain paints work better for different types of pool surfaces, or for painting over pool surfaces that have been previously painted. Not all paints are suitable for every pool surface.

The best pool paints for different surfaces generally are:

  • For concrete pools, acrylic enamel or epoxy are the best pool paints.
  • For bare plaster or marcite pools, epoxies offer the best value, though for rough surfaces an epoxy primer like Gunzite is advisable.
  • For fiberglass pools, epoxies are the best pool paints.
  • For steel or aluminum pools, epoxy paints are the best choice, though these require special a primer prior to applying the finishing coat.
  • For sandblasted pools made from either concrete or plaster, various epoxy or acrylic paints work, though choice depends more on specific needs that said, epoxy pool paints will last longer.

Generally, acrylic-based pool paints should last 2-3 years, while epoxy pool paints should last 5-8 years. This depends on a number of numerous factors, however, such as climate, the type of surface and regular pool maintenance.

    What About Rubber Paint

We have just one word for this type of paint: nope. Chlorinated and synthetic rubber paints are chemically resistant, which is why people starting using it to paint swimming pools. However, the substances that make rubber paints resistant to chemicals are polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, which are known to cause detrimental neurological, reproductive, and endocrine effects, as well as cancer and other conditions.

PCBs are no longer produced in the United States, but not all paint is manufactured in the United States. Youll still find chlorinated and synthetic rubber paints available from some manufacturers and retailers, but we highly recommend using one of the other three types to protect the people who swim in your pool from being exposed to PCBs. Its not worth the risk.

What Is The Proper Surface Preparation For The Pool

Surface must always be clean, dry and properly prepared prior to painting. Failure to do so will lead to eventually blistering and/or peeling. Previously painted surfaces should be Power Washed to remove loose paint or excessive chalking. Scrub the entire pool with a TSP solution to remove all dirt, oils, loose or peeling paint, and chalk. All surfaces should then be acid etched with a 15-20% solution of Muriatic Acid to achieve a medium grade sandpaper finish on bare or plaster and to remove mineral deposits on previously painted chlorinated rubber surfaces. Neutralize/rinse with TSP. Before applying the paint, the pool must be completely dry.

Allow To Dry For As Long As Possible

The longer a pool is allowed to dry prior to filling the better the ultimate coating quality and longevity. Allow the coating to dry at least 7 DAYS IN SUMMER, and 14 DAYS IN WINTER, prior to refilling the pool with water. If a coating has not had adequate drying time and is filled prematurely, its colour may be damaged.

Once painted, allow your swimming pool to cure for 7-14 days before refilling with water

    After Painting The Pool

How To Know When To Replace Your Pool Liner

You have finished painting the pool. Looks good, doesnt it? You can now remove any painters tape. Before thinking about doing anything crazy, like filling the pool with water right away make sure you have given the paint sufficient time to dry. Usually this is 3-5 days, but make sure to double check the directions on the specific paint type youve used. If you get any rain or moisture during the drying time, make sure you are removing the water as fast as possible and allowing for extra dry time if the rain lasts for more than an hour or two.

    Painting For Pool Safety

Pool paints make things slippery, so can cause safety issues. A new paint job can protect swimmers welfare.

    Resolving slipping issues:

    • Mix some sand or soft rubbery particles into paint, using it on shallow parts of the pool, steps and any benches.
    • Scatter some soft sand over steps or other areas after painting.
    • For paint thats already dried and cured, use an anti-slip spray or solution that adds texture to improve traction.

If using sand, dont use more than about a quarter cup in or on the paint, as too much sand can make surfaces feel gritty and even damage skin.

Can You Paint A Plaster Pool

So, can you paint a plastered pool?

    Yes.

Is it a good idea to paint a plastered pool?

At Willsha Pools, we would say NO.

However, it has become commonplace. Compared to new plaster, paint requires reapplications about four times as often, it doesnt feel as good, it doesnt look as good, and painting your pool costs more when you factor in all of the costs in the long term.

Pools that are regularly painted will not age anywhere near as well as pools that receive a new plaster surface every couple decades.

Years of inferior interior surfacing will lead to cracking of the shell, which might include structural cracks. With the increase in water migration through the shells, coping and tile failures are more common in painted pools.

You might also notice the rebar rusting far faster in painted pools than in ones that are replastered.

The bottom line is that the interior surface of painted pools becomes more unstable as water passes through, which can lead to greater problems down the road.

    Pool Paint Coverage

Pool paint adheres to all kinds of pool surfaces, and can be used on cement, plaster, fiberglass, or over other paint .

It makes the pool appealing to look at, including the ability to create bright colors, patterns, or murals. It also helps to prevent or cover stains, corrosion, and other damage to the pool shell over time.

In the past, painted pools needed to be redone every year, and its a slow, difficult process. Todays pool paints take advantage of technical advances in plastics and epoxies, so they can last anywhere from 2-8 years, which makes pool paint a much more appealing option.
