Every metal component, the pool water and your body are all conductive and will carry electricity in the right situation.
In an improperly bonded pool stray currents are out of control and will seek the easiest path for conductivity. A bonded pool balances the electrical pressure and keeps all currents flowing outward into a bonding wire or grid where they are safely dispersed.

Grounding A Swimming Pool
Grounding and bonding are two different things that sometimes get confused as one. Grounding refers to protecting people in the pool from a potential fault in the electrical system . A fault in the electrical system refers to a higher than normal flow of electrical current.
When a fault occurs, it needs to be stopped by attaching a piece of equipment to the earths ground so that high electric current can flow towards the ground and not through the people in the pool. When the pools equipment is properly grounded to the earth with a GFCI receptacle or breaker, it will protect the people in the pool from potential electrical shock. What Is A Pool Pump Used For
A pool pump is the heart of a swimming pool. The pumps main task is to circulate water, ensuring treatment chemicals are dispersed and the water does not stagnate. It does this by pulling water in through an inlet, funnelling water through a filter and then pumping the water back out into the pool.

When you have differing electrical voltage, an electric current is able to flow, and thus will shock or electrocute a person when touching one of the metallic components of the pool. What Is Bonding And Why Do We Do It
Bonding of metal is typically done by a 8 gauge copper wire. The connections of metal by the copper wire allow for electric flow to pass through metal.
In all metal, there are little electric currents. Electric currents that cannot escape to ground, or go back to their source, and ultimately, concentrate to one area are highly dangerous.

For example, if someone is swimming in a pool and the pool cage becomes concentrated with electric flow, the electricity may easily flow through the water shocking the human.
In another example, if the pool pump shorts, it can pass electricity through the internal water . And now, anyone is in the pool can become electrocuted.
