Reducers To The Rescue
To bring down pH, use a made-for-pools chemical additive called pH reducer . The main active ingredients in pH reducers are either muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate . Reducers are readily available at pool supply stores, home improvement centers and online.
Muriatic acid is powerful its used to etch concrete and you need to be careful when adding the chemical to your pool. It comes in liquid form, so you need to protect yourself from accidental spills and splashes. Always read and follow the manufacturers directions for safe handling, applying and storing of muriatic acid. A 1-gallon bottle is about $45.
Sodium bisulfate comes as dry granules and is considered easier to add and safer to handle than muriatic acid. Nevertheless, it should be handled carefully. Protect eyes and skin, and wear a dust mask to avoid inhaling any dust from the granules. A 25-pound bucket costs about $50.

It Can Be Harmful To Humans
Its hardly a coincidence that the recommended pH level for your swimming pool water is about the same as a human tear.
This is where pool water will have the least wear on a swimmers body, and ensure the best possible water quality.
A pH level thats too high causes dry, itchy, or sticky feeling skin, and even skin rashes. It also irritates the nose and eyes, similar to the feeling of getting shampoo in your eyes .
A pH level thats too low has a similar effect in terms of skin irritation, stripping the natural oils from your body leaving you with dry, itchy skin. It also causes more severe eye irritation, such as redness, puffiness and burning of the eyes.
Note: These symptoms can also be caused by a buildup of chloramine or a high level of total dissolved solids .
Does Low Ph Affect Chlorine
Low pH has a huge impact on chlorine. Chlorine needs a pH of at least 7 to work properly, so if the pH in a pool is below this level, it will have severely reduced effectiveness.
This means that even though you may be adding enough chlorine for effective cleaning and disinfection purposes, low pH levels can increase bacteria counts dramatically which could lead to skin irritation or eye damage.
To avoid these drawbacks, keep your water at an acceptable pH range by monitoring regularly with a test kit and adjusting accordingly when necessary.

How To Raise Stabilizer In Pool Water
If you need the pH level in the pool to rise, you need to add pool conditioner or stabilizer directly to the pool. As usual, follow the directions because some manufacturers may have you dilute the powder in a bucket while others suggest that you sprinkle it directly on the pool surface. If you have a sand filter, the product may suggest that you add it to the skimmer.
Make sure that you are adding the correct amount of CYA because you can actually over stabilize your pool. Test you CYA constantly and double check your pool size before adding so you know how much CYA you need.
If you have the pool drained, still test your water before adding CYA because some places use CYA in their water treatment. Test consistently and carefully to keep your water safe and healthy.
When it comes time to add stabilizer to raise your CYA level, you need to first find out how much stabilizer you need to add. Usually, about 13 oz of stabilizer will raise the CYA level of 10,000 gallons of water by 10 ppm.
Put the stabilizer in the skimmer basket while the pump is running, and keep it running for one day after you add the stabilizer. Dont backwash or clean the filter for a week after adding the stabilizer.
You must remember that stabilizers dissolve in the pool very slowly and you wont be able to accurately test your pool or get a solid reading on the CYA for several days. Wait a week before testing again and only then add more if you need to.

How To Raise Ph In Pool Water
We recommend never adding more than 2 lbs or 900g of soda ash per 10,000 gallons of water per treatment.
Starting at the deep end, sprinkle the soda ash over the entire surface of the pool.
Make sure that the pump is circulating to move the water around and then wait at least an hour before testing again.
If the pH is still too low, try adding some more soda ash. Soda ash may make the pool water a little cloudy at first, but it should become clearer after a day or so.

How To Increase Ph In The Pool
There are any number of commercial chemical products that you can use to raise the pH of your pool. Usually they have brand names that involve the word pH Increaser, Up, or Raise.
We recommend this pH increaser here.
Whatever their trade name, all these products are based on sodium carbonate otherwise known as soda ash. Be aware, though: sodium carbonate isnt the same thing as sodium bicarbonate, AKA baking soda.
Yes, you can use baking soda to raise the pH in pool, but its not ideal. See below.

Why Is My Pool Water Cloudy After Opening A Pool

SWCG maintenance is all about cell cleaning and replacement, period: Chlorine production happens in the salt cell, and a defective cell will lead to less or no production of chlorine. What Is Total Alkalinity
Total Alkalinity is very closely related to pH, as it is a measurement of all alkaline substances in the water. Proper Alkalinity levels are a key factor in maintaining pH many describe it as being a pH buffer. Low Total Alkalinity levels causes rapid pH fluctuations, and high levels make pH difficult to adjust. That said, its best to adjust one and then the other, not both at the same time. If Total Alkalinity is out of balance, address it first.
The best range for Total Alkalinity depends which sanitizer you use. If using calcium hypochlorite , sodium hypochlorite, or lithium hypochlorite as your primary sanitizer, the ideal TA range is 80-100 ppm. When using dichlor, trichlor, or bromine as your primary sanitizer, the ideal range is between 100-120 ppm. For a salt water chlorine generator, most manufacturers recommend TA levels between 80-120 ppm. Maintaining the right balance of pH and Total Alkalinity is essential to keeping your pool water in good condition.
If your Total Alkalinity levels are too low but pH levels are above 6.8, you will need to add Alkalinity Increaser . When both Total Alkalinity and pH are too low , use pH Increaser to bring both levels up. If your Total Alkalinity levels are too high, add pH Reducer .

Cyanuric Acid: What Is It And Why Do I Need It
Cyanuric acid, or CYA, is a stabilizer that partially blocks sunlight on chlorine. If you have low pH and stabilizer, the most common product to use is Cyanuric Acid. The way it works is .
With the correct level of CYA in the water, , you will have to add much less chlorine because the levels will be more stable.
Be advised, however, that while stabilizers do stop chlorine from breaking down they also reduce the effectiveness of the chlorine when it comes to disinfecting your pool. You will need to keep the chlorine level higher than you normally would when there is CYA in the water in order to keep the chlorine effective.
For example, when CYA is at 30 ppm, chlorine must be at 2 and 4 ppm, but when CYA is at 50 ppm, chlorine needs to be between 4 and 6 parts per million.
So, if you have to keep higher chlorine levels you will have to add more sanitizer. However, this will be nothing in comparison to the amount required to replace losses caused by UV exposure if you do not use a stabilizer. Also, you will have to add chlorine much less often if you use this method.
Can You Use Baking Soda To Clear Up A Cloudy Pool
NO! Baking soda is a base and will hugely increase the level of pH, which actually causes the water to turn cloudy. Some people may suggest using baking soda as a quick fix if alkalinity is high, but it is not a reliable pool chemical. Chlorine should be the only substance used to clear a cloudy pool.
