I Have Found Ducklings Alone What Do I Do
The mother duck may have been spooked away and has not returned. Keep the babies protected and wait from a nearby location to see if the mother returns. She will usually return within a half-hour if the area has become quiet again and the threat is gone. She is very protective of her babies and will not go far or stay away for very long. If the mother does not return to her babies within 1-hour, the ducklings should be rescued and brought to Wildlife Rescue.
What To Do If You Find Ducks In Your Pool
- Provide a ramp to allow ducklings to get out. You may use any surface thats not too slippery for the ducklings feet, to help them walkout of the pool. Ducklings are not able to fly out of the water, nor can they step out from the pools tall ledge. The ducklings may drown if they become exhausted because they cannot get out.
Why Do Ducks Like Pools
Well, the most obvious answer is, theyre water fowl, and your pool is full of water. Its a logical and comfy environment for them.
The other thing is, there are no predators in your pool. No alligators waiting to have duck confit or duck a lorange. Were kidding. Alligators arent that fancy with their food.

Keep Your Swimming Pool Clean

This doesnt mean you put glitter in the pool though, please dont do that. Instead, try putting shiny metallic objects, like CD discs and mirrors, around the pool. In trees, on the fence, wherever you can. Again, the only downside of this option is that it wont often work at night.

There Is A Family Of Ducks Crossing The Road How Can I Help
Always consider human safety first never put yourself or other people in danger to help a family of ducks cross a road. You can help by waving at drivers to alert them to the birds. Ask passersby with pets or children to keep back. Keep a safe distance, and try to gently steer the birds in the direction of the closest pond, stream, river, or lake.
It may seem like a good idea in these situations to try to catch the family and move them to a safe spot, but this risks scaring off the mother and scattering the babies.
Remember that crossing roads is a fact of life for urban wild animals, and one of many skills babies need to learn from their parents.

Many germs that might be found in bird droppings can infect humans. Duck and goose droppings, in particular, might contain germs such as E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, or Cryptosporidium .
Most germs in bird droppings are killed by chlorine within minutes in a well-maintained pool.

The Ducklings Have Just Hatched How Long Will They Stay There
Once hatched, the ducklings will stay in the nest for at least 10 hours while they dry and get used to using their legs. Then, usually in the early morning, the female leads them to water. Bad weather may delay this, but the sooner the ducklings get to water to feed, the better their chances of survival. They cannot survive without their mother, and take 50-60 days before they fledge and become independent.
The Problem With Ducks In Swimming Pools
Duck and goose droppings are a significant health hazard to humans. E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, or Cryptosporidium are a few of the germs contained in duck feces. While chlorine kills most bacteria within minutes, however, Crypto can survive for up to a week, even in the most well-maintained pools.

Ideally, you can either hatch your ducks yourself or get them delivered from a breeder within 1-2 days of their hatching. The sooner they are around people, the better chance youre going to get them to like you.
When you hold and pet your ducks, give them treats such as dried mealworms, small pieces of tomato, lettuce, kale â whatever their favorite healthy treats are. No duck junk food or bread!
They might scream in disgust and terror when you begin handling them or take them away from their feathered flock mates. However, with repeated holding + treats theyll warm to your affections â or at a minimum, tolerate you.
We let our most maternal hen, Jackson, raise ducklings in 2016. Shes also a very tame animal. If you breed ducks and the mother is very afraid of you, her ducklings are also likely to be very fearful of you.

We should also note here that if youre going to have ducks, you need to plan to actually get ducks . At least two or more. Theyre incredibly social animals and they want to be around another animal constantly, or they get really lonely and stressed.

The Pool Guarding Gator
Depending on how you feel about gators, you might be interested in the pool guarding gator. He quietly floats around the pool, making eyes at the birds, and easily intimidates them away from the pool. No one wants to come up against a croc.
There are some pros and some cons to this option:

The way a sonic cannon works is that it releases very loud sonic blasts, which scare off a variety of bird species, not just ducks.
Of course, this technique can have its drawbacks, since if you want to attract songbirds to your garden but ensure that no ducks come around to steal any of their food, you will, unfortunately, deter all birds.
Sonic cannons can be customized so as to release their sonic blasts at specific times during the day or according to a cycle that you have complete control over. Most models come with a timer, but there are also random modes available.
The reason that ducks are so easily scared by powerful sounds like the ones released by a sonic cannon is that they feel like they are being hunted down with a rifle.
You can use this information to your advantage to deter ducks from your water sources.
Unfortunately, the sonic noise cannons make can sometimes be too strong even for people, so you might not be able to use such a machine in your backyard.

Dont Leave Any Type Of Food Outside
If youre positive you havent left any food outside for the birds to get, ask everyone else that lives in the house. Triple check the kids arent feeding them. Feeding animals, birds especially, is basically a welcome, make yourself at home invitation.

Time To Get The Garden Hose Out
Please keep in mind, using a garden hose to shoo these guys away is not cruel and it is not inhumane. Spraying unwanted animals with the hose will not hurt them but it will deter them from going into the pool, on your deck, your lawn and discourage them from coming back.
We do NOT recommend using a high-pressure hose as this will harm any animal that encounters the high pressure of the water. Use only a simple garden hose. You may not even have to hose the animals, rather try to hose beside them or around them to direct them out.
Grab Some Good Quality Life
In the wild, some species of owls will prey on ducks and kill them for a source of food. Naturally, ducks are scared of this predator and see them as an immediate threat. By positioning a few fake owls in your pool area in obvious spots, you can discourage them from landing in your pool. The best types of owl props you can use are motion-activated versions. These move or make a sound whenever they sense motion. This can make them seem more real and raise alarm with the ducks. If it doesnt have any motion, the ducks will work out that the prop is not a threat and continue to go in the pool.

What Not To Do
All of these methods will help you harmlessly get rid of ducks. Each method has pros and cons, but none of my strategies will hurt the birds.
Other sites may recommend using a fishing line or bird netting to handle your duck problem. But with these methods, the ducks can get tangled up and seriously injured. Your solution to ducks in your pool should never be a harmful one.
Its not just an ethical matter. Ducks are among the fowl included in the Migratory Bird Act. This law means that harming a duck on your property by your efforts could land you in legal trouble.
