I Have Found Ducklings Alone What Do I Do
The mother duck may have been spooked away and has not returned. Keep the babies protected and wait from a nearby location to see if the mother returns. She will usually return within a half-hour if the area has become quiet again and the threat is gone. She is very protective of her babies and will not go far or stay away for very long. If the mother does not return to her babies within 1-hour, the ducklings should be rescued and brought to Wildlife Rescue.
What To Do If You Find Ducks In Your Pool
- Provide a ramp to allow ducklings to get out. You may use any surface thats not too slippery for the ducklings feet, to help them walkout of the pool. Ducklings are not able to fly out of the water, nor can they step out from the pools tall ledge. The ducklings may drown if they become exhausted because they cannot get out.
Why Do Ducks Like Pools
Well, the most obvious answer is, theyre water fowl, and your pool is full of water. Its a logical and comfy environment for them.
The other thing is, there are no predators in your pool. No alligators waiting to have duck confit or duck a lorange. Were kidding. Alligators arent that fancy with their food.
Seriously, though, a swimming pool is a safe place for ducks. They can relax, eat, and do their ducky business without worrying about being eaten. Thats a pretty sweet deal if youre a duck.
Keep Your Swimming Pool Clean
Keeping your pool clean is not only beneficial to you as it allows you to swim anytime you like, but it can prevent ducks from visiting. They love murky pond-like water, so the dirtier your pool is, the more inclined they are going to be to swim in it. Even some leaves floating about on the surface can encourage them to settle in for longer than youd like, as they may mistake your pool for a pond.
Hang Some Shiny Objects
Some birds love shiny, sparkly objects and will steal what they can when they can if its shiny and able to fit in their little pockets. Some birds are scared of shiny things.
Shiny, sparkly, reflectors have helped some people deter ducks. As ducks and birds are quite skittish, reflections can make them jump and hop right out of the pool.
This doesnt mean you put glitter in the pool though, please dont do that. Instead, try putting shiny metallic objects, like CD discs and mirrors, around the pool. In trees, on the fence, wherever you can. Again, the only downside of this option is that it wont often work at night.

There Is A Family Of Ducks Crossing The Road How Can I Help
Always consider human safety first never put yourself or other people in danger to help a family of ducks cross a road. You can help by waving at drivers to alert them to the birds. Ask passersby with pets or children to keep back. Keep a safe distance, and try to gently steer the birds in the direction of the closest pond, stream, river, or lake.
It may seem like a good idea in these situations to try to catch the family and move them to a safe spot, but this risks scaring off the mother and scattering the babies.
Remember that crossing roads is a fact of life for urban wild animals, and one of many skills babies need to learn from their parents.
Its Harmful To The Ducks
Ducks are wild animals and should not be hanging out or roosting in your backyard. Not only is floating in and drinking chlorinated water unhealthy for the ducks but if they stick around long enough, they might start laying eggs in your garden.
Wild ducks dont know youre pool water is chemically-treated. All they see is a sparkling lagoon with no pond scum in sight. Drinking chlorinated water over time will cause serious damage to their kidneys and hatching their young in a residential area is a recipe for long term ducky danger.

Can Bird Droppings In The Pool Spread Germs To Swimmers
Most germs in bird droppings are killed by chlorine within minutes in a well-maintained pool.
The germ Crypto, however, has a tough outer shell that allows it to survive for a long time in the environment. Crypto can survive for days even in properly chlorinated pools. Currently, CDC is not aware of any evidence of Crypto being spread directly from birds to humans.
Put Out Some Animal Pool Toys When You’re Not Around
Wild ducks do not like predator-infested waters. Keep certain inflatable animal toysalligators, killer whales, snakes, and dolphinsin the pool when you’re not using it to scare off ducks. However, this method does not always work. Once the ducks learn that the floating thing is not really a threat, they will come right back.

The Ducklings Have Just Hatched How Long Will They Stay There
Once hatched, the ducklings will stay in the nest for at least 10 hours while they dry and get used to using their legs. Then, usually in the early morning, the female leads them to water. Bad weather may delay this, but the sooner the ducklings get to water to feed, the better their chances of survival. They cannot survive without their mother, and take 50-60 days before they fledge and become independent.
The Problem With Ducks In Swimming Pools
Duck and goose droppings are a significant health hazard to humans. E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, or Cryptosporidium are a few of the germs contained in duck feces. While chlorine kills most bacteria within minutes, however, Crypto can survive for up to a week, even in the most well-maintained pools.
Theres also a danger to the ducks to consider. Drinking chlorinated water irreparably damages their kidneys, and they often drink water while they are swimming.
Protect your family and the local wildlife by keeping ducks away from your pool and spa.

Having a pool is the family dream. Being able to retreat to your pool on a hot summer day is something that many of us wish we had. Taking a nice dip in the cool water and following it up by soaking in some sun can make for a fun and relaxing afternoon.
There is a lot of work that goes into maintaining that pool, though. Keeping it clean both chemically and from debris such as leaves and twigs covering it during the colder months, and all of the other things that need to be done to keep your pool looking pristine.
So, it goes without saying that you dont want anything coming along and messing that all up. There are plenty of things that can present problems for the cleanliness of your pool. One of those things are those friendly waterfowls known as ducks.
You may be asking yourself what the problem with ducks is. Theyre cute and can be fun to watch from time to time, after all. But it wont be so cute when you are dealing with their droppings or looking to get some peace and quiet amidst all of the quacking.
Tip #2 Employ Forced Loving + Treats From A Young Age
Have you ever known any adult human whose temperament changed from grumpy to nice or vice versa? Neither have we. Ducks arent so different.
At a certain age, their temperaments are fairly well-etched into their tiny duck brains.
Ideally, you can either hatch your ducks yourself or get them delivered from a breeder within 1-2 days of their hatching. The sooner they are around people, the better chance youre going to get them to like you.
When you hold and pet your ducks, give them treats such as dried mealworms, small pieces of tomato, lettuce, kale â whatever their favorite healthy treats are. No duck junk food or bread!
They might scream in disgust and terror when you begin handling them or take them away from their feathered flock mates. However, with repeated holding + treats theyll warm to your affections â or at a minimum, tolerate you.
We let our most maternal hen, Jackson, raise ducklings in 2016. Shes also a very tame animal. If you breed ducks and the mother is very afraid of you, her ducklings are also likely to be very fearful of you.
Ducks are very social animals
We should also note here that if youre going to have ducks, you need to plan to actually get ducks . At least two or more. Theyre incredibly social animals and they want to be around another animal constantly, or they get really lonely and stressed.

The Pool Guarding Gator
Depending on how you feel about gators, you might be interested in the pool guarding gator. He quietly floats around the pool, making eyes at the birds, and easily intimidates them away from the pool. No one wants to come up against a croc.
There are some pros and some cons to this option:
- Check the sizes of the gator you want to purchase some are too small to scare birds.
- It may not work. Some ducks might not even realize what a gator is, making this floatable option good for a pool toy and scaring the neighbors but nothing more.
- Some reviews are great, some reviews say it doesnt work. Its up to you whether you think a scary gator might do the trick.
- Great for pranks.
Scare Ducks With A Sonic Cannon
Using a duck cannon can be another method of keeping ducks off dock places and even one of getting rid of ducks in swimming pool spots.
The way a sonic cannon works is that it releases very loud sonic blasts, which scare off a variety of bird species, not just ducks.
Of course, this technique can have its drawbacks, since if you want to attract songbirds to your garden but ensure that no ducks come around to steal any of their food, you will, unfortunately, deter all birds.
Sonic cannons can be customized so as to release their sonic blasts at specific times during the day or according to a cycle that you have complete control over. Most models come with a timer, but there are also random modes available.
The reason that ducks are so easily scared by powerful sounds like the ones released by a sonic cannon is that they feel like they are being hunted down with a rifle.
You can use this information to your advantage to deter ducks from your water sources.
Unfortunately, the sonic noise cannons make can sometimes be too strong even for people, so you might not be able to use such a machine in your backyard.

Tip : Animal Pool Toys Are Essential
Pool owners everywhere will love this one, and it costs nothing either.
Animal pool toys are a great way to keep ducks and other birds away from your swimming pool. Ducks will give a wide berth to anything that even slightly resembles a predator, such as an alligator, so get those pool toys inflated!
Leaving them to float around the pool when you are in the house or out and about will keep any pesky duck at bay.
Make Way For Ducklings: What To Do When You Find A Nest In Your Backyard
What would you do if you discovered a mother duck incubating a nest full of eggs in your fenced-in backyard?
One Newton family found themselves in just such a situation when a mallard laid a clutch of eggs right beside their back door.
Quackie chose a sheltered corner of the yard by the back door to lay her clutch of eggs.
Initially, they were concerned that their golden retriever, Quincy, would bother the new neighbor, but the gentle bird dog, described fondly as descended from stuffed animals, showed no interest in Quackie.
But they foresaw a larger issue. Their home is a mile from the nearest body of water, with a busy road in between, and they worried that Quackie would need human intervention to transport her hatchlings to a safe location. They did some research and learned that mallard eggs are incubated for 27-28 days, leaving them about three weeks to make a plan.
Quackie will incubate her clutch of eggs for 27-28 days.

Dont Leave Any Type Of Food Outside
If youre positive you havent left any food outside for the birds to get, ask everyone else that lives in the house. Triple check the kids arent feeding them. Feeding animals, birds especially, is basically a welcome, make yourself at home invitation.
And once you start that, theyll keep coming back.
Tip : Use A Duck Repellent
There are a variety of duck and goose repellents available on the market and each one does the same job. Apparently, the chemicals are completely harmless to humans or ducks which is good to know. Most of us dont want to hurt these creatures, but we do want them to keep away from our pools!
Duck repellents can be sprayed on lawns, plants and other vegetation. The jury seems out on how well these work some say they work perfectly while others say that it doesnt work at all. If you want to try this for yourself you can buy Liquid Fence Goose Repellent on Amazon.

Time To Get The Garden Hose Out
Please keep in mind, using a garden hose to shoo these guys away is not cruel and it is not inhumane. Spraying unwanted animals with the hose will not hurt them but it will deter them from going into the pool, on your deck, your lawn and discourage them from coming back.
We do NOT recommend using a high-pressure hose as this will harm any animal that encounters the high pressure of the water. Use only a simple garden hose. You may not even have to hose the animals, rather try to hose beside them or around them to direct them out.
Grab Some Good Quality Life
In the wild, some species of owls will prey on ducks and kill them for a source of food. Naturally, ducks are scared of this predator and see them as an immediate threat. By positioning a few fake owls in your pool area in obvious spots, you can discourage them from landing in your pool. The best types of owl props you can use are motion-activated versions. These move or make a sound whenever they sense motion. This can make them seem more real and raise alarm with the ducks. If it doesnt have any motion, the ducks will work out that the prop is not a threat and continue to go in the pool.

What Not To Do
All of these methods will help you harmlessly get rid of ducks. Each method has pros and cons, but none of my strategies will hurt the birds.
Other sites may recommend using a fishing line or bird netting to handle your duck problem. But with these methods, the ducks can get tangled up and seriously injured. Your solution to ducks in your pool should never be a harmful one.
Its not just an ethical matter. Ducks are among the fowl included in the Migratory Bird Act. This law means that harming a duck on your property by your efforts could land you in legal trouble.
