Alkalinity enhancers are a common chemical available for purchase at pool stores. But if you look at the ingredients of these enhancers, you will notice the main ingredient is sodium bicarbonate, which is more commonly known as drum roll please baking soda!
In reality, using plain old baking soda is a good DIY alkalinity booster. Plus, its cheaper and has the same effect as store-bought alkalinity enhancers.
Add Baking Soda To Balance The Water
If the alkalinity is low, you need to add baking soda. The quantity of baking soda to add to the pool differs depending on the reading and the volume of your pool. Is It Safe To Plunge With Off Balanced Water
Low alkalinity goes hand in hand with a low pH creating an acidic environment. Your pool water pH and alkalinity can affect disinfection by chlorine. Chlorine is very slow to react at high pH levels and can be over 50% inactive at pH levels over 8.2.
You would never want to swim in a bath filled with lemon juice because the acidity would sting your eyes and irritate your skin. For this reason, it is definitely not recommended.

Get The Right Quantity To Add To The Pool
Most people do not like adding chemicals into their pool. So, they only add three-fourths or one-half of the amounts indicated on the container. This is a good step because having the pool pH at a low value is better than having to lower the alkalinity again with muriatic acid because the pool water became too basic. If your pool water still has a low alkalinity level, you can still add more sodium bicarbonate to it.
Tips On Raising Swimming Pool Alkalinity
- You need to rely on the product label to determine how much to add, based on the ppm you want to raise and the size of your pool. Some manufacturers will recommend adding differing amounts, suggest only adding a certain amount at a time, and some will suggest to first dilute the baking soda in water before adding to the pool.
- The type of pool you have also matters in terms of the ppm range you need to adhere to, but if you maintain a 100-120 ppm range, this will be sufficient for concrete, vinyl, fiberglass, gunite, or shotcrete pools.
- After months and years of testing, you may notice patterns in your alkalinity, such as adding water tends to raise or lower alkalinity. You may want to adjust the amount of alkalinity increaser based on this knowledge.

How To Decrease Alkalinity Levels
To increase the pool water alkalinity level to its ideal range , you can either add sodium bicarbonate to the water or any kind of product that increases water alkalinity. Generally, all such products have baking soda as an ingredient. After adding baking soda or the required product to the pool water, let the water rest for a couple of hours before going for retesting.
Can You Swim In A Pool With High Alkalinity
High alkalinity itself is not necessarily an unsafe swimming condition.

The Roles Of Ph In Water Chemistry
Managing pH is a critical component of maintaining healthy and balanced water chemistry. It is so important because pH is a driving factor in the Langelier Saturation Index , and also because pH determines how effective chlorine will be in non-stabilized pools. So in pools with no cyanuric acid , the lower the pH, the stronger chlorine will be, because pH controls the dissociation equilibria between strong and weak chlorine:

While the LSI determines when water is oversaturated with calcium carbonate , pH is a major factor on the LSI. And since LSI violations occur locally, not universally throughout a pool, pH matters a lot. For instance, there’s a chart below that shows the equilibria of alkalinity types. When the pH gets to 8.2 or 8.3, it becomes very difficult for calcium to stay in solution, because carbonate alkalinity binds really well with calcium . So when your pH gets too high, calcium tends to precipitate out of solution even if the overall LSI of your pool is balanced. We see this phenomenon cloud up pools, like when someone adds soda ash too quickly.

Baking Soda And Ph Levels
Adding baking soda will also raise your pool’s pH level some, but if your main goal is to raise the pH versus simply raising alkalinity, we recommend using soda ash in lieu of baking soda. Adding six ounces of soda ash to 10,000 gallons of water will raise the pH roughly 0.2, while adding the same amount of baking soda will have a negligible effect on your pH.
Note that soda ash does also raise alkalinity along with pH. That six ounces of soda ash will raise your alkalinity by about 5 ppm, so only use soda ash if you want to raise alkalinity and pH.

What Causes Rise In Ph And Total Alkalinity In A Swimming Pool
One of the major reasons why pH rises above the recommended level for a swimming pool is high alkalinity.
To avoid high alkalinity, add Alkalinity Increaser slowly by slowly while measuring its level and always ensure that your Total Alkalinity is within the recommended range of 80 – 120ppm because if it goes above 120ppm, your pH will definitely rise high.
The second cause of high pH in a pool is using Calcium Hypochlorite pool shock to sanitize pool water. Cal hypo comes with high pH and Calcium level and will significantly increase pH in pool if you don’t take prior measures to balance your pH.
Also, abnormal rise in TA might be caused by the water source. It could be possible that your pool fillwater is already high in alkalinity and will therefore increase your TA once it mixes with more Alkalinity Increaser you are using. Test your water source for alkalinity and use a different source if it has high TA because you’ll need to use too much dry acid more often to lower both pH and TA in your swimming pool.

How Much Baking Soda Do I Add To My Pool
As a rule of thumb, use 1.5 pounds of baking soda per 10,000 gallons of pool water. This should raise the alkalinity by about 10ppm . Or you can use the chart below.
