As mentioned before, we all know how skittish birds can be the majority of the time. Its rare to find a bird that doesnt immediately fly away when you show up or shoo them away.
Try leaving your radio on to see if it keeps the birds away. If they think humans are around, that means the enemy is around and they might think again about being in your backyard or your pool.
If the radio isnt working, try some heavy metal. The loud drums and cymbals might do the trick. Probably best to warn the neighbors though.

Year after year, I am asked the same question, How do I keep ducks away from our pool?. Obviously, with the amount of money it costs to have a pool built, it is such a pain having these feathered fowl enjoy it as their own.
Fyi, Putting a floater that looks like a real duck only encourages a whole flock to take up residency in your pool. No good.
Here are some proven methods, as well as one not many know about, to keep them out.
1) Remove anything that might attract birds to your yard, such as a bird feeder or a bird bath. Take away all flowers or plants that might lure birds into your garden.2) Buy a fake replica of a predator to scare the birds away. Most people opt for owls, which can be placed in or hung from a nearby tree or awning. Some birds might respond better to rubber snakes or alligators placed around the perimeter of the pool.
3) Keep the birds away by moving the predators every few days. Some pool owners think it is easier to buy a mechanical replica that detects motion. For example, some owl replicas will flap their wings or move their heads when they sense movement in your yard.4) Place a toy or object in the water when the pool is not covered. Some pool owners have used an inflatable dolphin will keep birds out of your swimming pool area.

Solar BlanketsSolar blankets float on the surface of the water and will submerge sufficiently with the weight of a duck to provide enough water to for them to paddle, play and enjoy. This means that ducks will continue to enjoy the use of your pool, pooping on the pool blanket, coping and surrounding areas.
The top surface of the solar blanket will quickly become soiled with feathers and faeces which will smudge across both surfaces of the cover when the blanket is rolled. In short, a Solar Blanket exacerbates the duck problem and does not offer any form of relief.

A lot of wild animals carry diseases, and birds are no exception. Some of the bacteria and viruses spread by ducks and other birdsbird flu, salmonella, E. coli, and otherscan make humans sick.
Theoretically, the chlorine in your pool will eradicate those contaminants so you dont have to worry about infection and illness. But if the chlorine in your pool isnt at the correct level, its not going to be as effective at killing those bacteria and viruses.
Also, some of those things are spread through the animals feces. If the ducks poop on your pool deck where theres no chlorine, and then you accidentally walk in it with bare feet you see where were going.
Your best bet to avoid illness is to keep ducks out of the pool altogether.

Keep Up With Pool Maintenance
It may sound repetitive, but pool maintenance and cleaning is the best practice I can preach. Not only does it keep up the appearance and safety of your swimming pool, but it will also likely lessen the chance of ducks swimming in the water. Ducks prefer natural-looking bodies of water. So when pool water has balanced chemicals and no debris floating around, it is not as attractive for them.
Invest In A Solar Cover
Solar covers are usually used to prevent water evaporation and trap solar radiation, which increases the water temperature by up to 15 degrees. They come in all shapes and sizes, so you can find one that best fits your pool. Make sure you buy one that actually fits so ducklings don’t manage to sneak in and get stuck.
Using a solar cover will not only make your pool warmer and prevent leaves and debris from falling into it, but it is also a great way to prevent wild ducks from swimming in the water and pooping in it.

How Do I Get Ducks Out Of My Pool
I have a pair of Mallard ducks that have made my pool a home. This is not only gross but it is not healthy for us when we swim, and there are always duck feces to clean out of the pool.
How can we harmlessly but permanently remove them from our pool? We live on a golf course and no more than 100 feet from our backyard is a beautiful lake and waterfall filled with fish and is everything a duck could want, except these ducks.
I hate to resort to other options people have given me but they have to go, bottom line.
What can I do?
Make It Difficult For Them To Swim With A Water Surfactant
Its not inhumane, but dont use this if theres ducklings about in the area. Using a water surfactant makes the water harder to swim in and can cause smaller ducklings to drown. We dont want this.
This surfactant acts to push all the dirt and debris to the side of the pool, essentially creating a surface tension layer in the pool which makes it harder for birds to swim in because it reduces the effectiveness of floating.
Birds will not have an enjoyable time in your pool with this water surfactant and when they eventually realize theyre not enjoying themselves, theyll leave to find somewhere they can relax a bit more in the water.

Time To Get The Garden Hose Out
Please keep in mind, using a garden hose to shoo these guys away is not cruel and it is not inhumane. Spraying unwanted animals with the hose will not hurt them but it will deter them from going into the pool, on your deck, your lawn and discourage them from coming back.
We do NOT recommend using a high-pressure hose as this will harm any animal that encounters the high pressure of the water. Use only a simple garden hose. You may not even have to hose the animals, rather try to hose beside them or around them to direct them out.
Why Keep Ducks Out Of The Pool
Ducks and geese carry different diseases that people can get. They can be introduced to your pool when they defecate in the water. Chlorine, at the recommended ranges, can easily destroy many of these waterborne zoonoses, but others can be quite resistant. According to the CDC, duck and goose droppings may might contain germs such as E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, or Cryptosporidium . Cryptosporidium is the same protozoa associated with a human diarrhea incident and is one of the most chlorine resistant zoonosis we see in recreational water illness treatment/prevention. Use Inflatable Pool Toys
Inflatable pool toys will work like scarecrows in this scenario, except they will be for scaring the ducks. Ducks are terrified of predators and they may not be the brightest birds in the pond. So try a large inflatable toy of an alligator or a snake.
The presence of this inflatable toy in the pool may fool the ducks into thinking theres a predator in there and they will avoid the pool.

Use An Ultrasonic Pet Repellent
If you’re dealing with other creatures besides ducks, it might be worth it to buy a pet repellent. These inexpensive machines emit a high-frequency sound that humans cant hear but that is highly irritating to birds. The sound effect is harmless to wildlife and simply works to shock the animal into flight so it doesnt get too comfortable.
If you don’t maintain your pool, you’re just asking for birds to make a home in it.

Geese. Geese are drawn towards water and grassy areas. This is why you often see them at parks and golf courses. Goose control is needed for the backyard area when geese have found your outdoor summer haven. Installing Goose control will be the only way to get rid of geese from the pool and yard.

Put A Plastic Owl In Your Pool Area
Owls are one of the known duck predators. Good thing that owls are often stationary. It might not be easy for ducks to figure out that the owl they see lurking around the pool area is fake.
Having plastic owls lurking around your pool area can be enough to scare them away. For this methods success, you should consider putting up decoys that move their heads and make a hooting sound. Having several of these around your pool area wouldnt be a bad choice either.
Tell Those Ducks To Duck Off
You may find that using more than one tactic is your best bet for making sure ducks stay out of the pool. You may also need to deploy your prevention tactics for several days until the ducks learn your pool isnt as comfortable and inviting as they thought it was.
Keep an eye on the bird traffic, and when you dont see ducks trying to land in your pool anymore, you should be able to remove the measures you put in place.
