How To Test My Pool for a Leak

Finding a pool leak yourself is sometimes pretty hard to do, especially if its a tiny little liner tear or puncture.

But we listed 2 methods to try. These both include different steps to find the most common types of leaks.

The bucket test works by allowing you to see if your pool is losing water due to evaporation or an actual leak. And the ink test shows you where water is seeping out by watching the flow of the dye.

Professional leak detectors use items like electrical probes to track the sources of least resistant connections. These send them audible frequencies letting them know where the voltage is weak.

They also might use a pressure method where they can tell where the plumbing is losing water pressure.

How Do You Know If Your Pool Has A Leak Sound

If the water level outside the bucket has dropped more than the water level in the bucket, you probably have a leak. If there are no leaks, the water level inside and outside the bucket should be the same.

You should perform the test at the end of this post to see if your pool is leaking.

Prepare To Add Water If Necessary

If you are going to inspect your skimmer for leaks, the water level in your pool should be high enough to reach the area where the skimmer box is located. It will be impossible for you to determine the source of the leak if the water level does not reach the skimmer box, especially if you are going to conduct a dye test. If the water level is not high enough, add more water to your pool so that the water level is about an inch higher than where your skimmer box meets the pool wall.

Grab a normal-sized 5 Gallon bucket and place it on the second step of your pool. Fill the bucket with water to match your pools water level. Use a marker or duct tape to mark the level inside of the bucket. Turn off the circulation. Wait a few days, then mark the new level in the bucket and pool or spa. Both the water in the bucket and the water in your pool should evaporate equally. If the pool level is more significantly more, you may have a leak. If the water levels evaporate at the same rate, then it is probably not a leak.

Determining A Genuine Swimming Pool Leak

Having considered the above false alarms not to be a cause of abnormal water loss in your swimming pool, then the next step to take is using the bucket test. The following are procedures of a bucket test

  • Fill a regular normal bucket with pool water: Using the same pool water fill a regular bucket with water to 1-2 inches from the top of the rim. The purpose of using the same pool water is to ensure you have the same temperatures.
  • Carefully place the bucket in the pool: Position the bucket inside the pool in a way the bucket is in level with the waters in your swimming pool. The best place to place it is on the pool steps. To ensure the bucket is held in place put something heavy into the bucket.
  • Make marks of the water level: Mark the water levels inside and outside the bucket using a tape or a water resistance marker.
  • Monitor and wait for 24hrs: Ensure unnecessary disturbance of the pool for 24 hours then observe the water levels in the bucket and swimming pool. If the water level in the bucket and pool remain the same, then there is no leak in the pool, but if the water levels in the pool have dropped more than the water in the bucket, then there is cause for alarm for a possible leak in the pool.
  • Repeat the test under different conditions: Have test repeated under different conditions to establish where the leak might be. Repeat the test with the pool pump off. The following results could further help stipulate where the leak is.

Is Leakage Greater When The Pump Is Off

While the pump is running, leaks in pipes, fittings or valves on the suction side of the system before the pump usually draw air in rather than leak water out. When the pump cycles off, however, water leakage may occur through these openings. Air locks in the pump that require frequent manual priming, bubbles emitted from the return jets in the pool and high-pressure readings in the filter that are relieved by opening the bleed valve are all signs that a leak somewhere before the pump is sucking air in while the pump is energized and probably leaking water out when the pump stops.

How To Know: Pool Leak Vs Evaporation

How Do I Know If My Pool Is Leaking?

If you have experienced water loss in your pool, you may have questioned whether it was a leak. During the summer months especially, as the temperature rises, there is an increase in water evaporation. The real question is, how do you know if your water loss problems are due to evaporation or a leak? Generally, we suggest calling a leak detection company to find the source of a leak, but before you spend the money, consider this do it yourself test to rule out evaporation.

The Bucket Test

  • Place a bucket of water on your pool step and weigh it down with some rocks
  • Fill the bucket with water
  • Make sure that that the waterline inside the bucket is the same as the waterline on the outside of the bucket. If it is not the same, measure the difference between start and end both on the inside and outside
  • Wait a full 24 hours and check the lines
  • If the water level on the outside of the bucket is lower than the line on the inside of the bucket, then you most likely have a leak
  • If the water level went down evenly both on the inside and outside of the bucket, it is evaporation

The Skimmer Test

  • Fill pool to normal level
  • Turn off all features
  • Leave pool alone for 2 day
  • Measure the difference between start and end
  • If there is 0.25 inch per day or less of water loss you are in the clear!
  • Try test again with features turned on to determine if water loss is from another source.

How Much Water Loss In A Pool Is Normal

Water loss can vary wildly depending on whether you are in a wet, rainy period or a drought. Your pool likely contains 18,000 to 20,000 gallons of water. During a drought, many inground pools can lose 60-120 gallons of water per day just due to evaporation. Losing water can make for a costly municipal water bill or overwork your water wells pump. So, its understandable you want to make sure none of this precious resource has leaked out of your pool. You can conserve water by turning off pool water features that might lead to additional evaporation. If youve recently changed the landscaping around your pool, you could notice a difference in evaporation. Fences and shrubs can protect your pool from windy conditions that lead to faster evaporation. Adding a screen or shade to reduce the suns rays can also help you save water. When the water stabilizes at any specific level, dye test and inspect around the pool very carefully, at that level. Look for small debris which may have been sucked into the crack or void. This is a good indication of a leak. If the water stops at a wall fitting, wall step, or pool light, give it a good close look. Shutting off the pump, and plugging the drain, skimmer and return lines with expansion plugs, is another test, to rule out the plumbing.
