Clorox Pool And Spa Test Strips

How To Test Your Pool At Home | Clorox® Pool Water Testing App: Clorox® Pool& Spa

Clorox is a global manufacturer of countless cleaning products for personal and professional use, so it shouldnt be too much of a surprise that they have a line of pool test strips.

While calling a set of test strips premium might seem odd, Clorox does pull this off with these strips. After you dip the six-way strip into the water and let the color-coded results reveal themselves, take your phone and using the free Clorox Pool app to scan the strip.

The app will give you specific instructions for what to do next with your pool chemicals, and even suggest recommended products that you can pick up at your local retailer.

The Clorox strips test for total hardness, total chlorine, free chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and stabilizer. 50 strips per unit.

Launch The Mobile App

If you have not already done so you will need to download and register the Clorox Pool & Spa app either from the or Apple Store depending on the phone you will be using. The app is free.

Once you have installed the app and completed necessary registration, you will be ready to scan your test strip.

  • Launch Clorox Pool & Spa App.
  • Select Test Strip Testing.
  • Choose Scan Now and line your phone up with the test strip that is on the solid white background until it says the scan is successful.

Once you have scanned the test strip and it will immediately show you the results of the test.

If you get an error, simply click try again. When using the smart strips, test during the day and in bright sunlight for the phone to be able to read the strips easier.

Below is a video from my YouTube channel that shows how the Clorox smart strips work.

Rule of thumb:

  • DO NOT put pool chlorine into your spa or spa chlorine into your pool.
  • For pools use one tablet per 10,000 gallons of water. For the average pool that is 3 4 tablets per week depending on the weather and use of the pool.
  • For chlorinated spas, use ½ oz of chlorinating granules per 500 gallons of water.

ALK alkalinity. This is the buffer for the pH in the water. The pH level in pool water can directly affect the efficiency of the sanitizer . The pH level for the human body and eyes range from 7.2 7.6 this is the comfort zone. If the pH of the water is too low or too high it can irritate your eyes and skin. Often, when people complain of eye and skin irritation they think it is the chorine levels that is causing it, but no, its the pH level. When the pH of the water is not in balance it can also do damage to the pools equipment and surface.

How Often Should I Test Pool Water

Clorox Pool& Spa Small Pool Care Kit with Shock, Chlorine ...

It is recommended to test your pool water at least weekly and add chemicals if you see an increase/decrease in ideal chemical levels. More precisely however, pH and chlorine levels should be tested more often, perhaps daily until you come to a good understanding of how they fluctuate. Other readings, for calcium, alkalinity and cyanuric acid, tend to move more slowly and can be tested weekly or even monthly in some cases.

Pool Water Test Strip Disadvantages

Pool water test strips do have a few disadvantages. They have an expiry date, so if you have leftovers from one season, they may not be usable the next. They are also prone to spoilage if exposed to moisture or intense sunlight. There are more than a few pool owners who have had to throw away a supply of pool water test strips because they dropped them in the pool or left them lying about. And although some people believe the test strips are more accurate than liquid test kits, theyre probably not as accurate as taking your water sample to your local pool store.

How To Fix Low Salt Levels

How To Test Swimming Pool Water Chlorine and PH Level With Test Kit

If you test your pool water and find that salt levels are too low, youre in luck. This is quite possibly the easiest problem to fix with a salt water pool. All you need to do is add more salt!

Add a little salt, wait a few hours for it to dissipate, then retest your pool water. If salt levels are back to normal, youre done. If theyre still too low, repeat the process until you get the result you need.

What Do Pool Test Strips Measure

Pool test strips measure the chlorine level, as well as the pH balance of water. They also indicate when you need to shock your pool with a chemical like bleach for cloudy water that can irritate the skin.

Pool test strips measure chlorinated levels by changing color to indicate their concentration in your pool if they turn blue or green, then you know that there is plenty if they turn orange or red, then it means there is not enough, and you should add more bleach right away to ensure that your pool is safe for swimmers.

As for pH levels, the ideal range is between seven to eight anything below or above this can lead to dangerous and damaging effects on your pools water. The test strip will turn a different color to indicate the pH level, so you will know when it has gone too high or low.

Pool Test Strips: Your Simplified Guide

No one would like their swimming pools dirty. So, its no surprise why most people lots of chemicals to keep them sparkling clean. However, they are not enough to take cleanliness to the next level. This is where pool test strips play a critical role.

Pool test helps you monitor your swimming pool waters quality and check chlorine, pH, stabilizer, and disinfectant levels. A quick test lets you determine whether it is clean and safe enough to dive into the pool or not.

In this post, you will get more familiar with the swimming pool test strip. So, lets get started.

Why Pool Test Matters?

Swimming is no fun of the water not clear, clean, and healthy. In most cases, pools are used by different people at any given time.

So, it is critical to test and treat the pool water regularly to ensure that infectious illnesses will not spread. Plus, it also helps to enhance your entire pool experience.

How Often Should You Test Pool Water?

It is imperative to test the pool water at least once a week. If you notice that the ideal chemical level increases or decreases, ensure to add chemicals.

However, chlorine and pH level requires more often testing. You can do it daily until you understand better how they fluctuate. Other readings, such as cyanuric acid, alkalinity, and calcium, move slowly. So, you can test them either weekly or monthly.

What are the Required Water Tests?

  • Cyanuric Acid: 30-50 ppm
  • Alkalinity: 80-120 ppm
  • pH: 7.2-7.6

Three: Read The Pool Water Level For Total Chlorine

At this point, youll know how much free chlorine is in your swimming pool water and compare it against a range of seven-eight but what about total chlorine?

The test strips will measure both free and combined chlorine to tell you the total amount in the water. The test strips should read between three hundred and four hundred ppm, but its best to use swimming pool chlorine levels above five hundred for your safety.

To avoid nasty swimming pool chemicals costs, youll need a good measuring stick something that will tell you whether or not there is enough free chlorine in the pool.

Best Ways To Test Pool Water

Clorox Pool& Spa 70000CLX 3

The two most popular ways of testing pool chemicals are pool test strips and pool testing kits. Whether you use a kit or a strip, it should measure chlorine and pH levels. These measurements show two of your pools most important chemical readings.

Its best to find a kit or strips that also measure total alkalinity and total hardness. Total alkalinity can negatively affect your waters pH. Unbalanced total hardness can cause damage to pool surfaces and equipment.

As you conduct pool water testing, track the chemical levels. Use a journal or logbook to write down the data from each weekly test.

Working With Test Kits

Standard kits for testing water chemistry come in several different types. The particular kit used in this demonstration, the 4-in-1 by Biolab Guardex, tests your pool water’s pH, chlorine, acid demand, and total alkalinity. Other available kits are 2-in-1 5-in-1 or 6-in-1 .

Other types of kits include test strips or provide analysis through the manufacturer’s website or an app or online calculator. You can also get a reading by taking the kit to your pool supply store. Be aware that the bottle numbers, vial sizes, and chemicals in this project are unique to this particular brand of test kit. Follow the instructions for your kit usually, you can find them online.

Are Pool Test Strips Accurate

Pool test strips are accurate, but they are not substitutes for pH testing strips and pool test kits. What this means is that you should use the test strip to determine your pools chlorine levels if it turns green, then there might be too much of it in the water, which can lead to skin irritation such as dryness or rashes. If it turns red, there might be too little of it in the pool, leading to bacteria or algae growth.

After using the test strips, you should always follow up with a pool test kit to determine the actual pH and chlorine levels in your pool.

How To Fix High Salt Levels

To prevent your chlorinator from having to work too hard to assimilate an overabundance of salt, its a good idea to reduce too-high salt levels. You can easily accomplish this by draining a few inches of water from your pool, and adding fresh water to bring the level back up.

Retest, and continue the process until salt levels are back in the optimal range.

How To Test Your Pool Water For Iron

Usually, the same strips or kit that test for copper will also test for iron. It just makes sense as both are metal elements.

The only difference will be that once youve filled the test tube with a sample of your pool water, youll add a special solution made to test for iron. Then compare the water color to the color coded chart included with the kit.

How To Use A Pool Test Kit

Lifeguards, facility managers, and homeowners monitor various chemical levels of pool water to prevent unsafe swimming conditions. Chemical levels that are too high or too low will either harm swimmers’ skin and eyes, or create unsanitary conditions that allow bacterial growth in the water. The most common tests check pH and chlorine, while more advanced ones provide results for alkalinity, bromine, dissolved solids, and more. Pool water at major facilities should be tested daily. Smaller pools or home pools can be tested a couple of times per week.
