How to Set Up an Above Ground Pool

The final component common to an above ground pool kit is the ladder or entry system. You will find an A-frame ladder will be the go to choice for most retailers. These are very cost effective and work great on above ground pools. If you would like something a bit more substantial, you can generally upgrade to an entry system, which will include steps that go down on the inside of the pool and additionally handrails to assist with entry and exit from the pool. If you plan to install a wood deck around your pool, there are also deck mount options for the ladders that allow for a seamless transition from the deckto the ladder or entry system.

Cost To Install An Above Ground Pool In The Ground

Installation costs are going to vary by size, how deep you are going into the ground, local electrician rates, and a lot more. I will estimate installation including excavation installation, electrical, along with backfill and setup with plumbing to cost $7000.00.

Of course, if you can do any or all of this installation work for yourself, you will save on the job.

Installing an Optimum or Radiant Pool inground require a 1-foot of cement around the base of the wall. That will add to the cost and aggravation of any installation.

Clean And Store Your Winter Pool Cover

Find a large, easily accessible area like your lawn, deck, or driveway, and spread the cover flat. Make sure the areas clear of sharp objects and other potentially damaging items.

Wash your cover with water, cover cleaner , and a scrub brush or rubber broom.

Scrub it thoroughly, but gently. Youll ensure a longer life for your pool cover, which can save you quite a bit of money since you wont have to replace it. Make sure you allow your cover to dry thoroughly before storing it to avoid damage from moisture and mold.

Stash your winter cover in a durable, tightly sealed plastic tub or other large storage container during the off season. This will keep rats and other critters from making a nest in your expensive cover or, worse yet, chomping it into tiny bits.

Installing this for your house is going to be as quick and simple as possible. First, you need to get all the wood ready for this project. Set the wood you will use for the base of the pool on the space you want to start mounting.

The floor for this pool was cemented, so if you want something permanent you might do the same thing. After building the walls, install the vertical braces, then hanging the liner and others, and then fitting the solar cover. Water Care & General Maintenance

You will want to test your water at least weekly. There are a variety of different test kits available. They include strips that you simply dunk in the water to get your water readings, drop kits, and even completely automated systems that will continuously monitor your water and alert you if anything needs to be added. Some pool retailers will have a water lab that can test your water for you as well.

You will want to watch the following 3 readings weekly: pH, alkalinity and chlorine. For a chlorine-based pool, you’ll want to maintain your pH reading between 7.2 and 7.8, your alkalinity between 80 120 and your chlorine level at 1.5 3. These levels will ensure proper sanitization of your water and should keep it clear and clean.

On a monthly basis, you will want to test copper , water hardness and cyanuric acid levels, and ensure these are within the appropriate range.

The most common water issues with above ground pools are green water and/or cloudy water.

Green pool water indicates algae, and generally requires the water to be shocked with a high dose of sanitizer .

Cloudy water can be caused by many factors commonly we see it after shocking a pool. The dead algae that is not caught by the filter tends to hang out in the water. In these cases, you will want to floc the pool. This process causes the algae or other contaminants that are in suspension in the pool water to sink to the bottom, allowing you the ability to vacuum them out.

Installing An Above Ground Pool On A Concrete Slab

Commonly, above-ground swimming pools are installed on the earth or ground. Some will put them on concrete though and thats pretty nice. Well, its nice when its done right at least.

Installing an above ground swimming pool on concrete is nice as long as the slab is level. Most backyard patio concrete slabs are poured off- level to allow rainwater to drain off of them. This makes it difficult to install an above ground pool on them.

Pools cant be installed on grass. The grass will rot and affect the pool liner. Plus, grass can shift or settle over time, making it unstable. This means you need to remove the sod from the marked area. Rent a sod remover from your local hardware store or equipment rental shop to make this job easier.Once youve dug up the sod you need to rake the area to remove any remaining grass, roots, rocks or other debris .Check that the area is level again. This is such a critical step its important to check everything is level over and over again throughout the installation process.

Put Your Water To The Test

Skip this step, and stewing will take on a whole new meaning, apart from how you feel after a fight with your partner. While your pool is closed, itll be covered and largely safe from the elements, but rarely are winter covers foolproof. Plus, you wont be running your circulation system eight hours a day, or however long you should be running your pump. So what you do now will give your water a serious leg up throughout the winter.

If your sanitizer and other chemicals are properly balanced, your pool is all the more protected from corrosion, extreme clouding up, and becoming an overall murky mess that will cost big to fix. Love that idea? Youll love this next step even more.

How To Install An Above Ground Pool In 10 Steps

03/ 22/ 2015

We have installed over 5,000 above ground pools over the years and we usually hear a few clients ask if they could do it themselves. The short answer to that is yes.

But, you do need the right equipement and the right instructions.

The manufacturers of the above grounds like Aqualeader and Zodiac do a great job at manufacturing them. But it would be a stretch to say that every model comes with instructions on how to assemble .

Our goal here is to give you a 10-step overview on how to install an above ground pool yourself.

Now before you get started on reading the steps, know that this is one of the ways to instal. Every builder adds their own style.

Ensure The Ground Is Level And Prepare It For Construction

Part of proper pool planning includes choosing the area for your pool and obtaining the permits to install your pool. Once that has been completed the next step is to ensure the ground is level. This is a critical step to ensure your pool is structurally sound and safe.

To make sure your ground is level you can either:

  • Rent a transit from your local hardware store or equipment rental outlet.
  • Use a long, straight board with a carpenters level on top of it to measure the levelness of the area.
  • The entire area should be within 1 inch of being perfectly level.
  • If the ground is not level dig down any high areas to prevent the pool from settling over time.
  • Once the ground is level you need to take measurements before starting construction:

Find the center point . Use an existing object and measure the area and mark where the edges of the pool will go. Measure half the width of the pool from the marked edges. This is your center point. Mark the center.

Use a soft measuring tape to measure around the perimeter of the pool. Measure the outline of your pool using the radius mentioned above so you have a guideline for construction. Add one foot to the measurement and then mark the ground around your center point, following the pool shape and measurements given in the instructions.Use stakes to mark the ground.

    Electrical Needs For Installation

Watch this before setting up ANY above ground pool! Mistakes to avoid

While above ground pools do not require as much voltage as inground pools, they need electricity to run the pumps. An above ground pool typically requires around 120 volts, so this does mean that you should install a dedicated circuit breaker. This way, you wont blow breakers or trip the electricity in your house.

I strongly suggest having an experienced professional install anything electrical-related.

Ways To Heat An Above Ground Pool Fast

Gas pool heaters offer the fastest heating of all the options in this post. And that makes sense because just like a grill or oven, a gas heater creates heat by burning gas.

But at the same time, they also have the highest monthly operating cost of all pool heating options.

And its all for one reason: the heat source, gas

While gas pool heaters offer lower purchase costs, their monthly costs are at least 3x more expensive than the next cheapest option.

This is why most gas heaters are used to heat spas, or as backups for smaller pools. But if speed is your top priority, and you have money to burn , then a gas heater could be right for heating your above ground pool.

    Install The Vinyl Liner

This step will walk you through installing the pool liner. If you are using the stabilizers to help hold the wall up, then you will need to take them off while installing the liner. Do not place the liner wall seam directly over the skimmer or skimmer return cutouts.

We recommend removing your shoes for this part of the installation. Place the liner at the center of the pool with the flap from the seams facing down. Spread the liner so that the bottom seam of the circumference is resting on the cove evenly around the pool. The seam should not be upon the wall or shifted to one side. These conditions will create tightness or stretching of the liner when the pool is being filled.

Quick tip: Lay the liner in the sun before installation to make it easier to manage.

Fill With Water And Find Your Bravest Friend

You cannow go ahead and fill the pool. You will need to give it a chlorine shock as it most likely be very green. Make sure the pump is running so that it circulates the water.

But first, you need to find your bravest friend. That could be you or even maybe your kids. But that person can claim the title of being the bravest by jumping into the pool as the first ever! If you took your water from a quarry, that water will be freezing cold. So claim that title and let that be the first of many swims.

Note: Don’t worry, you will see the temperature climb fast in the summer. You can always add a heater.

Setting The Stake And Leveling Arm

Best Rectangular Above Ground Pools 2021: Reviews & Buying ...

The stake was driven into the center mark with a sledge. We fine-tuned the surface with taps on the corners to bring it level. It’s probably best to partially insert the center pin and check it for vertical level, since this is the point of rotation.

Place a washer above and below the arm while feeding in the pin. We tapped this in the last little bit with the sledge that was still handy. Somewhere around the middle of the arm, place the level and secure it in place. I used electrical tape since it was handy, but zip ties would be a good substitute. If yours has the option, place the level so that the bubble on the edge is facing up so that it’s easier to view while standing.

Ways Of Leveling Your Pools Base

Its not something you think about on a regular basis , but each cubic yard of dirt weighs about 2,300 pounds. That same cubic yard, spread out over the area occupied by a 15-foot round pool, is less than half an inch deep yikes! Thats a lot of shoveling.

If your backyard is far from level, your best bet may be to hire some equipment, like a Bobcat with a dozer blade, or even pay professionals to do the necessary earthmoving. This adds to your total cost, so may make it worth looking at either a larger or a more durable pool than what you first had in mind.

Should you choose to do the job yourself, you first have to decide between The Hard Way and The Easy Way.

The Hard Way starts by using a sod cutter or rototiller to hack out a chunk of your lawn. After that, youll use a shovel and rake to smooth and level what remains, removing all rocks and roots as you go, finally tamping down the soil with a lawn roller.

The Easy Way produces nearly as good a result, with much less sweat and no risk of damaging a buried cable or sewer line. It does require a patch of ground thats at least eyeball level, though, so you may still have to do some digging.

Sand takes much less effort to rake flat. Its recommended that you tape a spirit level to a straight board. As you drag it around the site of your future pool, any hollows and dips will be easy to spot and deal with.

Once your ground is level, you can lay down bottom plates, a base protector, and a tarp, and youre good to go.
