Things To Take Into Consideration When Choosing A Pool Liner

2021 Inground Vinyl Liners by GLI Pool Products

Consider the following when choosing a liner for your vinyl inground pool.

Colour

The colour you choose for your pool liner will affect the pool in more ways than just the appearance of your pool and backyard.

Blue is the most popular colour for pools, but it can come in various hues, from light to dark.

Dark colours absorb light and heat, which will help warm up your pool water. Dark liners also hide dirt, stains, and debris. So if you have any hard-to-clean stains, you wont have to worry about seeing them every time you go swimming.

The only major drawback to a dark liner is the risk of the liner fading and bleaching over time due to the chlorine and the suns UV rays.

Light coloured liners reflect sunlight instead of absorbing it, so they are less prone to UV damage, such as fading and bleaching from the sun.

But since light colours will show dirt and debris, you will have to stay on top of your pool cleaning schedulewhich isnt a bad thing.

For the best of both worlds, you might want to opt for a medium-coloured liner that offers a natural aqua appearance.

Pattern

Pool liners usually come with two patternsa border pattern and a pattern for the body of the pool. Another option is to have a solid colour or pattern without a border.

These seams might be more noticeable with tile patterns and solid light colours. Pebble patterns tend to hide seams. And wavy, swirl or abstract designs with a reflective water appearance provide excellent camouflage for seams.

Considerations For Pool Liners

There are some factors to consider when purchasing vinyl swimming pool liners. The gauge, which is the thickness, of the pool liner will have an effect on the durability of the vinyl liner. The standard gauge for vinyl swimming pool liners is around 20 mil. But you should consider investing in thicker swimming pool liners if you expect some wear and tear from your pool parties. Likewise, thicker pool liners provide more protection from the suns harmful rays which can keep your new vinyl pool liner looking beautiful for years. UV rays can also damage the liner material and shorten its lifespan. A Pool Cove, Wall Foam or Liner Guard can extend the life of pool liners by as much as 5 years. Use of these items can also make installation easier. Remember you will have to cut a place for your skimmer so make sure your new pool liner is in the correct place before cutting.

Pool Location Size And Space

When designing your pool space, you are recommended to first consider and plan the pool location. Since a swimming pool is the focal point in any property, particularly the backyard, you should ensure to get it installed in the right place.

A successful pool design involves a lot of factors, the chief among them being the location and amount of space it occupies. It is agreed that the pool is the center of attraction and comes next only to your home. However, you must try to bring about a design that actually complements your home and other property designs. Simply said, your pool should not overshadow your home. The size of the pool should be properly planned to literally transform the look of your backyard. It neither should be too large nor too small.

The Role Surroundings Play

The area around the pool plays a big role in the color of the water. The surroundings, including the house, deck, grass, trees etc., are all reflected on the pools surface. The darker the finish the more reflective it is. If there are a lot of trees or green grass around the pool these will cause the pool to look more green. The surroundings can also impact how much the pool stands out in the back yard. A dark pattern in an area that is shady or low light will blend in more. While that same dark pattern in a well lit bright surrounding will really pop.

Three Main Types Of Pool Liners

Picking the Perfect Pool Liner

There are three main types of pool liners Overlap, Uni-bead & Beaded . Each type of pool liner comes with its own attributes which well look at a little closer. Pay close attention to the type of pool liner you are removing to see if it was just overlapped at the top of your pool, or whether it had a uni-bead edge or a J-hook. If your pool has an overlap pool liner, you can always upgrade to a Uni-bead or beaded liner to make installation easier.

Overlap Liners are perhaps the most economical option for Above Ground Pool liners. They hang over the wall and attach by using coping strips to secure the liner in place. To install an overlap style liner, the top rail of the pool is removed all the way around the pool. Remove the old liner. Put the new liner in the pool, and drape over the top of the walls of the pool. Long plastic clips go down over the vinyl pool liner and the top wall, holding the liner in place. Coping strips can also be used to hold the pool liner in place. The top rails are then put back on the pool. The excess liner hanging down on the outside of the pool needs to be trimmed off. With overlap style pool liners, the liner can be seen under the top rail from outside the pool.

Common Pool Liner Questions And Concerns

We hope this article helped you pick the perfect liner to keep your pool looking the best it can in and out of the pool. However, you may have many more questions before making your decision, ranging from troubleshooting installation to measuring for your replacement liner. We have compiled a short list of some of our most common questions below.

Q: Which thickness is the best for my pool?

A: While some people may prefer or recommend a set thickness, it will not guarantee a longer lifespan or add to the quality of the liner. The thickness of vinyl is not the most important aspect of your liner purchase, and we always recommend our customers to choose the pattern first. You will be looking at your pool liner for years to come, so pick your liner based on the beauty with all else secondary.

Q: What do I need for a Liner Quote?

A: When quoting a liner, we will need: Your Pool Length, Width, Shallow End Depth, and Deep End Depth. If you have any area that the liner covers outside of your pool dimensions we would need those as well to make sure the liner is cut to fit your pool exactly!

Q: How accurate do my measurements need to be?

A: While exactness is always recommended, we understand that sometimes taking measurements can be difficult. Your liner has a lot of give and will stretch into place, measurements have around an inch for margin of error. Always install your liner on a warm, sunny day for the best fit.

Q: Can I measure my pool while it is still full?

Need Help Choosing Color Or Vinyl Pool Liner

I have looked at 1000’s of pictures and I’m starting to get stressed out about choosing the liner. We like darker color pools. COLOR

Remember that seemingly endless amount of liner patterns we mentioned? The first step to narrowing down your choices is to determine what you want the overall color of your pool to be! If you know up front that you want more of beachy looking pool, youll save a lot of time by passing over the dark blue liners scattered throughout the pattern line up.

While the liner plays a very large role in the end result of your pools color, there are other factors to keep in mind when choosing your liner color as well. For example, one factor is the sky. How Do I Choose A Pool Liner

Select the Thickness The thickness of the liner is less important than the fit. A liner that fits properly will last much longer than a thicker liner that doesn’t. Vinyl pool liners do not fail because they are not thick enough. We recommend choosing a pool liner based on the pattern rather than the thickness.

Is A Thicker Pool Liner Better

If both liners are properly installed, the thicker liner should last longer, although there are so many variables involved that it’s hard to say. The thicker vinyl is like a good insurance policy: problems will likely come up either way, but a thicker vinyl is additional protection from the worst damage.
