Summer is here, pools are open!

On opening day, Alexis Adler rode her bike from her East Village apartment, Mablen Jones walked the width of Manhattan from Hudson Square and Jane Schreibman took the F train and walked from First Ave. They were among the water enthusiasts finding the ultimate delight, immersing themselves in the Hamilton Fishpool on opening day.

The Citys public pools opened on Saturday, June 26, where cooling waters offer untold relief from the sweltering heat, particularly this very first week of the pool season.

Mablen is a regular indoor and outdoor swimmer at Parks Dapolito Center and with the Covid closing of the Citys recreation centers, these past 15 months, suffered the entire year by not being able to swim.

I have to swim to live, she said on that first day, in between laps. Hamilton Fish pool at Pitt Street is so gorgeous and spacious and there is no crowding! In the middle of a park, all the trees around make such a difference, too. Mablen also commented on how the large kiddie pool also separates young children from the youth and lap swimmers.

After a couple of days under the blistering sun, however, this avid lap swimmer, realizes that she must wear a long-sleeved shirt over her suit so as not to burn.

Cpsc News And Updates

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has voted to restrict allowances given to unblockable drain covers in the federal pool and spa safety law.

On September 28, 2011, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voted to interpret an unblockable pool or spa drain based on the size of the drain opening and not the size of the drain cover used over the sump. The decision is retroactive, so pools that were brought into VGBA compliance with the installation of an unblockablesized cover over a single, blockable-sized drain will have to be split, supplemented with a secondary system, or otherwise treated like a single outlet. The Commission has set a compliance date of May 28, 2012, to allow time for firms that require modifications as a result of this revocation to bring their pools into compliance with the statute as written.

Nyc Outdoor Public Pools Will Re

Hotel Pools In New York City

June 24, 2021 by Kevin McKeever

Wagner Pool in Manhattan is a Cool Pool and one of many NYC outdoor public pools opening on Saturday.

Summer 2021 is finally here and NYC outdoor public pools in all five boroughs will reopen Saturday, June 26, for all to enjoy. However, there are some rule changes to know before enjoying these free treasures.

All pool goers will be required to wear a face mask at certain times, according to the NYC Parks pool page . These are when:

  • Entering the pool facility
  • In locker rooms or bathrooms
  • When on the pool deck

Masks are not to be worn in the water, thankfully.

And thats it. Although the citys indoor pools remain closed and many aquatic classes have been cancelled because of the pandemic, much of rest is the same as in recent years when it comes to swim fun in New York Citys boroughs.

NYC outdoor public pools, which are free, will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for open swims, with a break for pool cleaning between 3 and 4 p.m. Early morning and late night adult lap swim hours are also available at some locations. The city may still host free learn to swim programs but many other aquatic programs are definitely off.

Metropolitan Diary: Black Felt Skirt

Dear Diary:

When I commuted to New York from New Jersey many years ago, I would take a train and then a ferry that would drop me in Lower Manhattan, where I would walk up Liberty Street to the BMT subway. In good weather, it could be a pleasant trip.

On one particular occasion, I was rather pleased with the new outfit that I had put together to conform to the dress code of my new employer, Saks Fifth Avenue: a black turtleneck sweater topping a circular black felt skirt that I had made that weekend.

Late as usual, I caught the train just as it was about to leave the station. Whirling around the pole, I was grateful to find one of the last available seats.

As I settled in, I noticed a woman who was sitting across from me. At first, she smiled. Then she began to sort of giggle. Finally, I could see that she was stifling an outright laugh.

I looked to my right to see what was so amusing.

Sitting next to me was a well-dressed young gentleman. He was sitting somewhat stiffly and staring straight ahead in an almost frozen state.

Draped across his lap was nearly half of my circular black felt skirt.

What Safety Measures Will Swimming Pools Take Once They Are Open

Once swimming facilities are reopened, they are likely to ask anyone with Covid-19 symptoms to avoid paying a visit.

When pools had briefly welcomed guests last summer, they had kept their changing rooms and showers closed, and asked their visitors to come to the pool swim-ready.

Swimmers were encouraged to keep their distance from others, stay in their lane, swim in a clockwise direction.

The venues sanitised their pools by reheating their water once every hour and using chlorine to inactivate viruses.

Metropolitan Diary: Ordering A Flagel

Dear Diary:

I was at Tal Bagels on the Upper East Side on a Saturday morning. I was lost in my thoughts, debating capers versus no capers, when I became aware of an older woman in front of me who was holding up the line.

I said that I would like a flagel, scooped, she said, gesturing toward the flat discs and explaining her preference for having the carb-y innards removed.

You cant scoop a flagel, the counterman replied, incredulous.

You can, the woman said emphatically. She was getting impatient. You can do it!

And he did. She got her wish and went on her way, and I left with my own order and a grin.
