New York Philharmonic Concerts In The Parks

This iconic New York experience, which began in 1965, returns in June after a two-year hiatus. From June 14 to 19, parks in all five boroughs will be transformed by the classical sounds of the world-renowned symphony.

All performances start at 8 p.m., except the indoor concert on Staten Island, which begins at 4 p.m.

Fireworks will take place after performances in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx.

Rules For Nyc Public Pools

  • Shirts with color are not allowed on deck, so be sure to bring a white shirt if you want to cover up or need a rest from the sun.
  • Items such as electronic devices, jewelry, credit cards, glass bottles, food, and newsletters, should be kept at home as they arent allowed or are just risky to have around in a public swimming pool.
  • If you forget your sunscreen, thats okay! Free sunscreen is provided to city pools across all five boroughs.
  • Accidentally brought some valuables with you? Thankfully, there are lockers at the pools, but you will be the one who has to provide the lock. Locks are actually required to enter, but certain locks like luggage locks are not accepted.
  • If you have a baby or small child that is in love with floaties, maybe dont give into their desires. Floaties can take up a lot of room at a public pool, so instead bring some inflatable arm cuffs so they can learn to float or swim without taking up space. Or just stay in the shallow areas until they learn how to swim.

What To Bring To The Outdoor City Pools

  • Swimsuits, and for mens shorts, they need to be fully or partially lined. It means that the garment should have a layer of fabric behind the visible fabric.

  • If you want to rest on the pool deck and need to cover up from the sun, bring a big towel or throw on a plain white shirt or white hat.

  • Bring a sturdy lock, which is required to enter, to keep your valuables safe, and they will not accept luggage locks.

  • Also, be sure to bring towels to keep yourselves dry and warm as it can be cold when you first get out of the pool.

  • If you visit on hot summer days and pools that are less shaded, be sure to apply sunscreen cream before taking the plunge! Dont jump into the pool, or the guard will whistle you!

Thanks to the American Academy of Dermatologys SPOT Skin Cancer program, most parks now offer free, broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen.

Swimming swiftly through the shallow end of the pool at Village East Swim Club in Manhattan, Jacob De La Rosa, 10, surfaced behind his instructor and latched onto the pool noodles at his waist, swinging himself around and laughing.

The scene would have been impossible just a year ago. Jacob, who has autism, was terrified of getting into the water, said his mother, Lee Hodge, 36. But that changed last summer when he was selected to participate in a free beginner swim class through Friends of + POOL, a nonprofit group.

Within the first week of joining the program, he was, like, completely a fish, she said.

Ms. Hodge said that as a single parent, paying for swimming lessons which can cost as much as $50 for a group class and over $100 for private sessions would have been out of the question, a situation for many families in New York City.

But as the summer kicks off, swim lessons free or otherwise have become scarce as the effects of a national lifeguard shortage in the city and across the country. Pools have had to close or reduce their hours because they dont have enough lifeguards, who also often serve as instructors.

COVID Restrictions In New York: NYC Public Beaches, Pools To Open For Summer 2021

The Floating Pool at Barretto Point Park in the Bronx has a spectacular waterfront viewbecause it’s literally on the water. This seven-lane pool got its name because its on a barge called the Floating Pool Lady that’s equipped with locker rooms, a gangplank leading to and from the barge, and a small amphitheater. The pools history is chronicled in the book The Floating Pool Lady, written by the urban planner and historian Ann L. Buttenweiser, who advocated for the creation of both the pool and the barge.

    What Not To Bring

Youll need to leave food, glass bottles, electronic devices, and newspapers at home. Unbound periodicals tend to blow around and create litter, food can be messy to clean up after, and theres too much water around to make sure your electronics stay safe. Just to be on the safe side, we also recommend leaving valuables like jewelry and credit cards at home.

Its time to make a splash: New York Citys outdoor pools are open for the season! said Commissioner Donoghue. Our pools are popular summer destinations for so many New Yorkers, and were happy to provide these free places to have fun, cool off on hot days, and get some exercise.

NYC Pools Set To Reopen Saturday

NEW YORK New York City’s free outdoor pools opened for the season on Thursday, one day after public schools let out for the summer.

New Yorkers can beat the heat in one of the Parks Department’s 34 large outdoor pools and 19 outdoor mini pools, scattered throughout all five boroughs. The outdoor pools will remain open until Labor Day.

The city also has 12 indoor public pools, which are open year-round.

The city’s pools had faced steep budget cuts this year, but a $32 million restoration to the parks and pools budget this week cleared the way for all of the pools to open on schedule Thursday.

Pools are open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., but they are closed for cleaning from 3 to 4 p.m. Some pools also offer early-morning and late-night lap swimming sessions. All swimmers must wear a bathing suit and should bring a combination lock to keep their belongings safe.

At most public pools in the city, the guard will frown and whistle if you splash, but not this one, which is made for splashing than serious swimming. The highlight here is its backyard vibes, which reminds you of a glorified backyard pool party with a bunch of people you dont know.

If this is your first time, finding where to swim in this labyrinthine 28-acre facility can be tricky. On entering, you will pass picnic tables, pop music blasting from oversized speakers, a skating rink, a bar/restaurant, and a big running track. But, keep walking, and you will get there!
