Cpsc News And Updates
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has voted to restrict allowances given to unblockable drain covers in the federal pool and spa safety law.
On September 28, 2011, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voted to interpret an unblockable pool or spa drain based on the size of the drain opening and not the size of the drain cover used over the sump. The decision is retroactive, so pools that were brought into VGBA compliance with the installation of an unblockablesized cover over a single, blockable-sized drain will have to be split, supplemented with a secondary system, or otherwise treated like a single outlet. The Commission has set a compliance date of May 28, 2012, to allow time for firms that require modifications as a result of this revocation to bring their pools into compliance with the statute as written.

Dive in just dont do it in a city Parks Department pool!
Indoor swimming pools will be permitted to reopen starting Sept. 30, Mayor de Blasio announced Friday. But NYC Parks Recreation Center indoor pools will not be included in that reopening.
Pools that do reopen will be subject to occupancy limits of 33% capacity and city Health Department inspections.
Swimming pools are a community anchor, an exercise center and an oasis in their neighborhoods, de Blasio said in a written statement. As transmission rates remain low, were proud to offer more ways to slowly return to business as usual.
Parks Department pools will not open on the same timeline because many of the agencys recreation centers are being used for COVID testing, food distribution and the citys childcare program as part of the Education Departments blended learning plan, a Parks Department official said.

Am I Required To Be Vaccinated To Play Community Sport
Outdoor physical recreation and sporting facilities such as swimming pools and leisure centres are open.
If these facilities are used for community sport , patrons participating or facilitating community sport do not need to be fully vaccinated to access the facility.
Patrons 16 years and older attending outdoor physical recreation and sporting facilities for purposes other than community sport must be fully vaccinated to access the facility, if the facility is open for fully vaccinated people .
This is in recognition that mixed aged groups participate in community sport, and teams with players unable to be vaccinated should not be at a disadvantage if they arent old enough to be fully vaccinated.

Spot the drowning child:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention an average of 10 people a day die from unintentional drowning. Software engineer Francisco Saldaña created the simple educational game spotthedrowningchild.com to help people recognize the deadly situation. A person who is drowning is physiologically incapable of calling out or waving for help meaning often there is little noise or splash. Things to look for instead:
The videos that Mr. Saldaña used show lifeguards successfully rescuing children from drowning.

What Safety Measures Will Swimming Pools Take Once They Are Open
Once swimming facilities are reopened, they are likely to ask anyone with Covid-19 symptoms to avoid paying a visit.
When pools had briefly welcomed guests last summer, they had kept their changing rooms and showers closed, and asked their visitors to come to the pool swim-ready.
Swimmers were encouraged to keep their distance from others, stay in their lane, swim in a clockwise direction.
The venues sanitised their pools by reheating their water once every hour and using chlorine to inactivate viruses.

Public Pools Will Start Reopening In Nyc
Just in time for the end of the current heatwave, New York City will reopen 15 of its free, public swimming pools. Eight pools will open this Friday, July 24, and the rest will reopen on Saturday, August 1. The Parks Department says that all pool-goers must maintain social distance and wear face coverings at all times when not in the water.
In total, the city has 53 public pools across the five boroughs. At the height of the coronavirus crisis in April, Mayor de Blasio announced that all public pools would be closed for the entire summer, in an effort to save $12 million on the city budget. However, as the Post reported, last month, the mayors administration and the City Council agreed to restore $9.9 million to the Parks Department budget to hire 716 lifeguards, pools staff and fund sprinklers and water fountains.
The pools that will open on July 24 are:
- Tottenville Pool in Tottenville, Staten Island
The pools that will open on August 1 are:
- Astoria Pool in Astoria, Queens
The opening date for Hamilton Fish Pool on the Lower East Side in Manhattan is still TBD.
All swim and exercise classes at pools have been cancelled for the summer. Outdoor pool hours are from 11:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m. daily, with a break for pool cleaning between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Outdoor pools are open through September 7, 2020.
