Super chlorinating is raising the chlorine level quickly, but not as high as when doing a pool shock. Shocking the pool is a periodic treatment to oxidize microcontaminants in the pool water. Our everyday chlorination will kill most pathogens, but chlorine molecules can be rendered inactive when they combine with nitrogen or ammonia. This creates what is called chloramines. Chloramines are no longer effective sanitizers and they are the cause of red eyes and a strong chlorine smell. Shocking removes chloramines and kills bacteria and algae.
For shocking a pool, we need a chlorine that is fact dissolving and fast acting the opposite of our everyday chlorinating tablets. Granular chlorine is the most common method, most commonly sold in 1 pound bags. Liquid chlorine can also make a great shocking chlorine. When shocking the pool, follow label instructions, with the goal of adding enough chlorine to reach breakpoint chlorination. If this threshold is not reached , full oxidation will not occur and the full benefit of shocking the pool will be missed. You will have only super chlorinated the water.

Ensure pump & filter are working properly, balance pH to 7.2pH, total alkalinity to 120 ppm & chlorinated pool water to 3 5 ppm.

Trichloro-S-Triazinetrione is the most popular type of chlorine for everyday use. It comes packaged in 3-inch tablets, 1-inch tablets or as sticks. They contain different pressings, but are chemically the same. Known as Trichlor for short, most varieties are 89 percent available chlorine .
Sticks or tablets have no difference other than shape. Some prefer tablets because they will stack better inside of a chlorinator or floater. The large tablets are typically 6 ounces, whereas the sticks are slightly larger at 8 ounces. The 1-inch mini tabs are faster dissolving than the 3-inch tabs , due to their increased surface area exposed to your pool water. Smaller tabs are useful for chlorinating spas or for larger pools that need a faster-dissolving tablet.
DOT shipping regulations require that chlorine tablets be individually wrapped. Why Is There A Chlorine Shortage Right Now
Blame two factors for the chlorine shortage, says CNBC. One, unsurprisingly, is COVID-19: Last summer, sales for swimming pools skyrocketed as people all over the planet stayed home during the pandemic, leading to an increased demand for prepared chlorine products.
But the other cause is more surprising: In August 2020, a chlorine plant just outside Lake Charles, Louisianaresponsible for making a bulk of the U.S.s chlorine tabletsburned down in the wake of Hurricane Laura, putting a huge dent in the production of chlorine tablets.
The BioLab facility will reopen in 2022, but in the meantime, its absence leaves just two domestic manufacturers of chlorine tablets: Occidental Petroleum and Clearon Corp. Even if both manufacturers increase production, theyd have to ramp up roughly 50 percent each to fill in the gap during the chlorine shortage.
Experts say the chlorine shortage will cause empty shelves in stores and extreme markups, which, because of the seasonal nature of pool usage, is about to come as a rude awakening to many outdoor pool owners. The financial services company IHS Markit says chlorine prices are expected to spike 70 percent this summer, compared to 2020.
If your average 50-pound bucket of chlorine used to cost $75 to $85, it now costs $140 and is expected to hit $158 in the near future, Scotty Heer, the owner of the Las Vegas-based Scottys Pool Service, told CNBC.

What Can I Do About The Chlorine Shortage
