Do Hot Tub Leak Sealers Work

Repairing a Leaking Hot Tub Jet : Hot Tub Tips

Hot tub sealers work for small leaks of up to 1/8 inch in diameter. As they are heavier than water but still liquid, they are designed to sink to the lowest spot often the place where the leak has sprung.

You dont need to empty a hot tub to fix it if youre using a sealer. However, they might be ineffective for major leaks.

I have used a sealer before. At my last house, I bought a used hot tub and discovered that it was leaking. So, I bought and used Marlig Fix-a-Leak.

After removing the filters, you pour Fix-a-Leak into the hot tub, and because it is heavier than water, it automatically sinks into the weakest place in the tub, which is exactly where the leak is. Then allow it to work for 24-72 hours before using the tub.

It worked very well after I used it. In fact, I wrote up a review in a recent article I published. In it, I shared info about what Marligs Fix-a-Leak is, whether it works, and how long it lasts. But I also revealed how it works.

How To Prevent An Air Lock In Your Hot Tub

A hot tub pump is designed to pump water, not air. Therefore, if air is in your plumbing lines, it can cause damage overtime. In order to prevent water entering your plumbing lines, creating an air lock and damaging your hot tub system, make sure that when you are filling your tub, the hose is placed into the empty filter canister instead of the tub itself. This ensures that the water fills the pump and internal plumbing along with the tub to prevent the development of an air lock. Once the tub is filled, bleed the pump by turning off the ground fault circuit interrupter, use a screwdriver to open the bleed valve until water begins to trickle out, then close the valve again. This will help further reduce the risk of air entering the plumbing and creating an air lock. It will also remove any air that did manage to get trapped during the filling process. Finally, test that all your jets are functioning correctly by turning on the pump and ensuring water is coming out of each individual jet.

Directions For Using Fix A Leak Solution

**Shake Well Before Using. Fix A Leak works best with warm water .

  • If spa insulation is saturated with water, empty spa and leave empty for 1 week for foam to dry out. Refill the hot tub once the foam is dry.
  • Remove all spa filters. For pools, if you have a sand filter set filter valve to by-pass the filter.
  • With your pump running on high speed, slowly add FIX A LEAK at the skimmer or any other suction intake.
  • After adding FIX-A-LEAK, allow your pump to run for 6-8 hours. If you have more than 1 pump, turn all pumps on periodically.
  • Continue to re-circulate water until the leak has stopped.
  • After the leak has stopped and given the proper time to cure , drain & clean the spa. Wipe down your spa as it is draining – do not allow the spa to dry before cleaning! For best results, leave your spa empty for 1 week after you fix the leak.
  • Re-install filter cartridges and then remove filter cartridges after a day to rinse out any left over FIX A LEAK film. Do not allow cartridges to dry before rinsing! For pool sand filters: Set filter valve to filter and resume normal operation. Backwash out unused FIX A LEAK film as required.
  • If the leak hasn’t completely stopped, the treatment can be repeated.

How Do I Find A Leak In My Hot Tub

To find a leak in a hot tub, remove the side panels, and note where the water is pooling on the ground. That will be directly under the leak. If you see wet foam and the source is unclear, the leak is probably inside the spray-on foam, making it very problematic to repair other than using liquid fix-a-leak products.

But, in this section, well be breaking all of those steps down for you.

So before we begin to dive into some popular searching methods, well layout the areas you need to check:

Leaks On The Suction Side Of The Pump

Suction side leaks are usually known by air mixed with the water at the return fittings. In many cases, suction lines only leak water when the pump is shut off. Normal Circulation may draw Fix A Leak away from the leak and not fix the problem. For FIX-A-Leak to work, the tiny particles must drip out of the hole, then coagulate together and harden.

To get your spa to leak on the suction side, you can try closing some of the jets to increase the back pressure and try turning your pump on and off repeatedly. You may also use a squeeze bottle to apply Fix-A-Leak directly to the problem area.

Reinstall The Filter And Clean The Cartridges For Several Days

You do not need to drain the water. The sealant does not affect the chemistry of the water, and excess product will be eliminated with the restoration of normal filtration.

Reinstall the filter and resume filtering. Note that the filter cartridge used to remove excess sealant must be cleaned several times until the sealant is completely removed. Do not allow the cartridge to dry until it is thoroughly cleaned.

How To Determine Whether You Need An 8oz Or A 32oz Bottle

Our 8oz. bottle can be used for minor drip leaks. Use 1 whole bottle regardless of the amount of water in the tub, ranging from 250 to 1000 gallons. Water Temperature should be between 70F and up.

Water leaks in hot tub or spa plumbing can be troublesome and in most cases very difficult to locate due to the foam sprayed insulation. The time and effort for a manual repair can at times become quite costly.

With FIX A LEAK the repair costs can be minimal and often be done by the hot tub or spa owner.

    Instructions for use:

This type of application will be for hot tub/spa leaks that are minor in nature. When you know your hot tub/spa is leaking but cannot detect a noticeable water drop inside the spa a wet spa pad or actual water slowly dripping onto the pad or floor may be the cause. Since it will be difficult to determine if you have sealed this type of leak follow the steps below.

    Remove all cartridge filters.

Pour the entire contents of the bottle into the filter intake or directly into the spa.

On day 1 run the spa for 4-6 hours, alternating between the low and high-speed jets.

Since the jets usually run on a 15-minute cycle, you must be present to restart once cycle kicks off.

After the 4-6 hours you can shut off your spa or just allow the recirculating pump to periodically run its cycle.**

After day two leave the spa off for 48 hours. During this time frame check to see if the water level is stable and if the hot tub/spa pad remains dry.

    Ensure to shake bottle well.

Can A Spa Operate With One Less Jet Due To Being Capped Due To A Leak

I had a leak detector come out and do a leak inspection and he found a leak in the jet or the pipe behind the jet in the spa. I had a repair company come out and crack open the decking to get to the pipe. They found the pipe cracked and the jet was leaking. They replaced the crack pipe and said it would be too costly to cut open the spa wall to get to the jet, so they said they could plug the jet and cap it from inside the spa and cut the pipe that delivered water to the jet. It worked for one week in pool suction pool return mode and then when I wanted to use the spa I turned the valves to spa suction spa return and withing a few seconds water came gushing out of the bottom of the filter. Has the re configuration of the capped and cut pipe to the jet put too much pressure on the filter? is the way it was fixed an OK way to fix a leaking jet?

Can A Crack In A Hot Tub Shell Be Fixed

Jetted Tub Pump Repair in Plano, TX

Yes. Small cracks in a hot tub shell can be fixed. To fix, drill a small hole at each end of the crack to stop it from spreading. Then apply an acrylic patch. This can be mixed with acrylic paint to match the shell color. Once dry, it can be sanded and buffed smooth.

As weve mentioned in the previous section, a hot tub shell can definitely be fixed. The best way to fix a small crack in the acrylic shell is to do the following:

What if the shell is too far gone?

For larger cracks or a chunk missing, you can use the above process in larger amounts.

Just know that glue, however strong, isnt designed to hold water under pressure, so really big gaps may require professional help.

How To Fix Leaks Around The Light

Another common area for leaks is the spa light. If the water level drops to around the height of the light, it could be to blame. The leak can come from a crack in the light fixture itself or the gasket behind it. Youll probably have to remove the side panels to gain access to the light. Follow these steps to correct leaks around a hot tube light:

  • Start by shutting off the power to the hot tub and removing the side panels one at time.
  • From under the hot tub, check each light for water to locate the suspected leaking light. If the leak isnt evident, remove the next panel and continue checking lights for moisture.
  • With the leaking light located, remove the bulb by carefully twisting and pulling it from the fixture.
  • Use a large pair of water pump pliers to remove the plastic retaining nut that holds it the fixture in place. You may have to cut away insulation foam for access.
  • Push the lens from the back, so it drops into the hot tub.
  • Spa lights come in different styles and sizes, so its best to take the fixture to a pool supply store and allow them to either match it with a new light or provide a replacement gasket. To reinstall a new light, simply clean any gasket residue from the inside, slide the new gasket onto the new lens, place the lens into the hole from inside the tub, and tighten the plastic retaining nut in the access area.

Note: If you have several lights, its best to replace all of them at once. Theyre most likely the same age and liable to leak soon.

    My Hot Tub Is Leaking

Hot tubs can be a wonderful at-home remedy for all kinds of aches and pains. But theres no pain quite like getting ready to use your spa and realizing that it has lost water. The tricky part begins as soon as you try to find where that water is coming from and then figure out how to fix it. So what do you do when you realize your hot tub is leaking?

Before you begin eyeing for that leaky component, make sure you shut all the power off to your hot tub. You dont want to turn into Tim Taylor who seems to get electrocuted any time he attempts a simple fix-it job .

The common places or parts youre likely to find a leak are the following: pump wet end seal, heater assembly manifold, PVC plumbing parts and tubing, jets, valves, connections, or in the acrylic spa shell itself.

    Pvc Connections & Unions

HOT TUB Jet Housing Leaking Water / HOT TUB Leaking Water

Unions are prone to loosening with vibration and changes in water temp. Hand tighten leaking unions. If they keep leaking, try changing the gasket, O-Ring, or the union assembly.

Tighten hot tub plumbing components by hand only. Since they are plastic, they will break if you use tools.

Glued plumbing parts are more difficult to seal. Try these fixes before cutting out and changing plumbing parts:

    • SpaBond Leak Seal Patch Kit. This kit repairs cracks in hard surfaces like PVC and spa shells for good, and installs like a sticker.
    • Plast-Aid Acrylic and PVC Repair Kit. This 2-part epoxy kit forms a lasting bond to acrylic and PVC.
    • Seal-a-Leak Leak Sealer. This pour in liquid seals minor plumbing leaks. Seal-a-Leak is great to try if you cannot find the source of a leak. Note: Pour in leak sealers cannot cure leaking pump seals.
    • PVC Clip-On Pipe Repair. This clever repair snaps onto existing pipes, couplings, and elbows or tees, sealing leaks at joints.

If the leak cant be repaired with these methods, cut out the leaking plumbing and change the parts.
