How To Soundproof A Noisy Water Pump In A Few Simple Steps

8 Easy Ways To Make a Loud Pool Pump Quieter!

I installed a water pump in my house quite recently and the vibration/noise emanating from the pump setup kept wrecking my head.

Thats the time I wanted to know how to soundproof a water pump.

I was told that the best idea would be to insulate it but nobody told me how to do it.

My quest to solve the noise problem led to the building of a cardboard box and behold the issue of noise from my water pump became a thing of the past.

Before I share my cardboard building experience with you, I will like to share some interesting facts about water pumps and the problems of vibrations/noise as well as some proven soundproofing techniques to adopt.

As a matter of fact, older and poorly fitted pumps have the tendency to cause loud noises, especially when they are installed in enclosed areas.

Proper installation and keeping a regular maintenance programme are essential for ensuring quieter running of pumps.

Install A Pool Pump Cover For Noise Reduction

Unlike having to build a soundproof enclosure for your pool pump, you can simply have a pool pump cover for noise reduction. All you have to do is hold it down with a bolt.

The cover is a soundproof material and would dampen any noise thats coming from your pump so that it works noiselessly. It also protects your pump from harsh elements and prolongs its lifespan.

Using a pool pump cover is one of the easiest tips to reducing the noise from your pump while providing enough ventilation in the process.

Install A Vibration Pad Under The Pool Pump

If you have worked through the above issues and your pool pump is still too noisy you can try installing an anti-vibration pad under the motor unit to dampen the vibration and noise

When the pump is running you can try holding the pump with your hands or firmly pushing down on the pump to see if that reduces the vibration and noise. If this works to reduce the noise I recommend installing an anti-vibration pad under the pump unit.

Most pool filtration systems are installed on a concrete slab with mounting bolts. It is a simple procedure to unbolt the pool pump unit, slide an anti-vibration pad under the pump and bolt it down again. You may have to drill holes in the pad for the bolts to pass through.

If you are going to install a pad under the pump, I recommend you buy a quality anti-vibration pad that has been specifically designed for mounting electric pool pump motors in outdoor conditions otherwise the pad will rapidly deteriorate and fail to reduce noise and vibration.

How Do You Fix A Noisy Pool Pump

If you have just moved into a new home and wonder if your pool pump is worth repairing, then I would say its always better to repair than replace.

However, just because the pool pump is old and running at half power doesnt mean it isnt worth fixing. Especially since swimming pools usually improve in quality over time, which means your pool pump will last longer. Or if you get a new one, it may be even more reliable than the currently operating one .

The main problem is that old pool pumps usually have ceramic bearings inside them, which are very small and easily damaged. This is the only reason why I would recommend you replace your pool pump if its old because any remaining ceramic bearings in the pump will be destroyed in a few months or years depending on how hard you use the pool pump. If they are already worn out after a few years of normal use, then any remaining ceramic bearings will start to fail soon.

Instead, if your pool pump has steel ball bearings or teflon rollers, then it could last for decades with very little maintenance . If you use your pool pump heavily and it is worn out, then replacing it is a good idea. However, if you cant afford to replace the pool pump yet, then at least try to repair it .

I was in no mood to spend a good amount of bucks on purchasing a portable pool. I knew that we are not going to stay in the small house for long, but still, I wanted to fulfill the most cherished dream of my kids. I still remember the joyous expression on my kids faces when they saw the beautiful pool. Even my pet Labrador did not wait a moment more and jumped into it.

My motherâs pool pump was installed in the dirt and was flat so this problem didnât apply to her pool. But this doesnât mean it doesnât apply to yours. Some pools are installed on wooden planks, grass, or even concrete and may be off balance if not installed properly.

If your pool pump is installed on a hard surface then it may be one of the causes to why itâs so loud. Vibrations will echo louder and farther on a hard surface compared to soft surface like dirt. What Is The Best Type Of Filtration System For Your Pool

    Pool Pump Noise

The best type of filtration system for your pool is an automatic salt chlorine generator unit . This will kill the algae spores and prevent future growths from happening without you having to do anything. Just make sure to keep adding salt once a month to keep the water nice and clean.

If you want a more hands on approach, I would recommend getting a whole house chlorine generator unit because it is easier to control since you can add more or less chlorine into your pool whenever you want. This will cause algae problems in your pool if left unchecked because it is too much chlorine. So if you get a whole house unit, then I recommend getting a pool shock treatment to reduce chlorine in your pool when needed so only enough chlorine remains for bacteria and algae protection.

Check The Water Level Of Your Pool

This is something that you can check this very minute. Something as simple as checking your poolâs water level may solve your noisy pool pump issue. If the water level of your pool drops too low, this can allow unwanted air to get sucked into your pools filter. Excess air in a filter will cause the pump to have to work harder. A harder working pump will increase the amount of noise it will make.

A simple way to make sure your pool has enough water is to fill your pool until the water level rises to at least the top third of your skimmerâs faceplate.

Build A Shed For Pool Pump And Filter

If you can keep your pool filter system separated from the pool and the house, youll do a lot to reduce how loud it seems. But you can take that even further by building a shed for the pump and filter to contain the noise.

Once again, this may be a difficult way to solve the noise problem if your pool is already built. But if youre building a new pool, then planning to place the filter and pump system away from the house and your neighbors and inside of a shed can mean that youll never have to deal with these noise problems in the first place.

When building your noise containment shed, make sure to use thick material like ¾ plywood to help keep the noise in. You can also use soundproofing products like Green Glue and acoustic foam panels inside of the shed to help make it even more soundproof.

Clean Out Your Pool Pump Basket

Leaves and other debris getting trapped in the basket can also cause additional noise. Here is how you clean the pool pump basket.

First you have to turn the pool pump off. Then you can take off the lid and clean the basket.

Once youve cleaned it, insert it back, fill the pump with water and put the lid back on.

Now, turn the pump on and let the air out of the filter.

This video shows the entire procedure performed on a number of different pumps:

    Bonus soundproofing tip:

You can additionally reduce noise by following this step.

First, wipe the edge of the lid and the part of the pump where the lid attaches.

Then apply petroleum jelly around the edge of the lid and around this opening from the inside.

The jelly will act as a watertight seal and prevent the noise from falling through the cracks.

    Pool Pump Noise Reduction Enclosure

Noisy pool pump – need a fix!

If you know what a generator enclosure is then a pool pump noise reduction enclosure should look a bit familiar to you. You can go the DIY route, but you need to make sure you know what youre doing because you dont want your pool pump to overheat because of a lack of ventilation.

I was debating about placing this noise reduction tip on this list because their primary function is to reduce sun and adverse weather damage and extend the life of the pool pump and not for noise reduction. BUT it does cut some of the noise the pump will generate, and if your pump is not making excessive noise then maybe this option is for you.

If your pool pump is making a lot of noise, then these types of enclosures will not work so well to soundproof your pool pump.

for the pool pump enclosure that I would recommend and that I will most likely buy shortly.

Someone did ask the question in the Amazon community if they could improve this enclosure for the pump noise reduction. The answer to that question was to place some heat resistant and self-adhesive noise reduction padding.

Im sure it would help to reduce noise by sticking the padding on the interior of the enclosure. Just make sure there is proper ventilation and that the pads do not prevent proper ventilation.

Build A Soundproof Enclosure For Your Pool Pump

If a slip-on pool pump cover doesnt offer enough noise reduction for you, then you may consider building your soundproof enclosure to cover your pool pump. Like a pump cover you could purchase, this will also protect your pool pump from the elements and should increase its lifespan overall.

Your pool pump enclosure can be a simple box built from thick plywood. Inside, youll want to coat the walls with Green Glue to enhance the sound absorption qualities of the enclosure.

After applying green glue inside, you can add a layer of soundproofing foam as well. This will absorb a lot of the noise and contain it to the enclosure so it wont escape.

Dont forget to add plenty of ventilation for your pump. Figure out where its getting airflow from and create a vent in your enclosure in that same area. You can even use some duct to ensure that youre getting great airflow without compromising the sound reduction qualities of your box.

Determining The Type Of Noise You Are Dealing With

It is imperative to determine the type of noise your pool pump is making before you take action to soundproof it. The two types of sound you will be dealing with a pool pump are:

    • Structural: Structural noise occurs when parts of the pool pump are rattling or shaking while the pump is running. To deaden structural noise, you will likely need to use a decoupling product such as rubber isolation mounts to isolate two hard surfaces that are smacking into each other.
    • Airborne: Airborne noise is most likely the reason you want to soundproof your pool pump. Examples of airborne noise are water moving, fans operating, or other standard operational noises that the pump and its motor will make.

It is normal for pool pumps to make some noise as they are machines with a motor and moving parts. If you notice a change in your pool pump and it starts making much more noise than normal, you likely have a broken pump. We are soundproofing experts here at Second Skin, not pool pump technicians, so if you suspect your pool pump is broken, we recommend calling a pool maintenance professional.
