Do I Need To Seal My Swimming Pool Grout

Removing Calcium Build-Up From Your Pool Tile Line – The Easy Way

Your builder will most likely use a pool grout sealer after grouting your pool tile. A sealer will help keep the porous material protected from the environment. But depending on which type of pool tile you use, the swimming pool tile grout sealer will be different.

For instance, if you installed porcelain or glass tile, use a low-residue sealer. This type of sealer is perfect for impervious tiles because it will make the application easier and wont leave a sealer haze on the tiles.

You have two types of pool grout sealers to choose from:

  • Penetrating sealer. This sealer will penetrate and protect the porous material without changing its look.
  • Enhancing sealer. This sealer will not only protect the material but will also enrich and darken the color.

Cleaning Pool Tiles Calcium Deposits With A Pressure Washer

A great addition to your pool service routine is a pressure washer, which uses intense force to spray water at a fast rate, breaking through calcium hardness that is often difficult to remove.

An alternative to pressure washing is bead blasting, which applies glass beads at high pressure and does not cause damage.

If you do not have a pressure washer in your garage, do not worry. Pressure washers are commonly found at your local home improvement store to rent.

Aim the nozzle at areas with calcium deposits and just above the water level to clear away deposits. Do not wash any tiles that are loose or cracked, as pressure washing may cause more damage.

Learning how to remove calcium deposits from swimming pool tiles is easier with a pressure washer.

How To Remove Calcium Scale From Pool Tile Quickly And Easily

Swimming as a recreational activity is the fourth most popular overall, and the first most popular for those aged 7-17, in the United States. According to the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, 309K public and 10.4M residential pools exist throughout the country. Because of the popularity of swimming, and the large number of swimming pools, its important for US pool owners and operators to know how to best maintain them. Though there are a plethora of maintenance issues with which to deal, knowing how to remove calcium from pool tiles is a particularly important one.

Understanding Why And How To Remove Calcium Deposits

Howand whydoes a pool develop calcium deposits?

There are a few reasons you may start to notice these stains around your waterline.

The first is hard water, which can leave behind a calcium residue over time. If you live in a part of the country with hard water, youve probably already noticed this buildup on your faucets, sinks and maybe even tubs.

The second culprit is heat, which the southern half of the U.S. has in abundance. Not only do high summer temperatures cause pool water to evaporate more, but also they raise the temperature of the water itself.

When combined with the third culpritthe chemical makeup of your poolthese conditions can lead to calcium deposits. Specifically, if your pool has high pH, high alkalinity and warmer water, calcium scale will begin to form.

The reason this situation so often happens at the water line is because of evaporation.

These crystals of calcium may appear as nodules that dot metal and plaster, or they might become crusty deposits that live in the corners of your pool.

Technically, these are two distinct things. Calcium carbonate, which tends to manifest as a flaky substance on the surface of the pool, and calcium silicate, which is grayish white and harder.

Either way, theyre not exactly aesthetically pleasing.

But thats not the worst part. To protect your pool, you need to remove calcium buildup altogether.

Tips For Preventing Calcium Scaling

Because calcium scaling is such a pain to remove, it is best to stay on top of preventing it by taking the following precautions:

  • 1Lower your pH and alkalinity
  • 2Use a pool clarifier to clump the calcium films together, then vacuum them away or let your filter take care of them
  • 3If you seem to be battling unusually high amounts, avoid shock with added calcium like calcium hypochlorite
  • 4Brush your pool regularly to keep calcium from building up
  • 5

The most effective chemical for removing calcium scale is muriatic acid , but you need to take some safety precautions when using it.

Always wear rubber gloves, goggles and clothes that cover your body well to prevent burning and skin damage from accidental contact.

If you have light scaling, you may be able to get away with using a vinegar water solution and a scrub brush.

And if you have a ceramic tile pool, it is better to try a gentler solution like this before jumping to the acid washing.

How To Clean Swimming Pool Tiles

How To Remove Calcium From Pool Tile (and keep it GONE!)

The best way to clean swimming pool ties is to treat your pool for several weeks with our calcium dissolving products. It is best to do this before trying to remove it manually. This is because our treatments soften hard calcium which makes removal much easier and simple to do. If you attempt to remove calcium without our pre-treatment is as hard as concrete and strongly adheres to the tiles. This means that you will likely cause severe damage to the tiles in trying to scratch it off. This can lead to chipped, scratched and broken tiles. We do not recommend using rubbing blocks, paint scrapers or pumice stones on tiles as these can scratch or crack the tiles permanently. Our calcium treatment kit is the best treatment option for softening waterline calcium buildup on swimming pool tiles.

Use A Pumice Stone Or Nylon Brush Cup

You can use a pumice stone or PoolStone to remove caked on calcium deposits.

You will need a lot of elbow grease for this method. Remember, pumice stones can only be used on tile and concrete, never your lining or soft surfaces.

Make sure the stone and the tile you are working on are wet before you start. Otherwise, you risk scratching your pool tile.

You can use a cordless drill and a nylon bristle wheel or brush cup to scrub calcium buildup away. Never use steel wheels or cups as they can damage your tile or cause rust on the bottom of your pool.

How To Remove Calcium From Pool Tile Without Draining The Water

When your pools pH level soars, the alkalinity drops. The imbalance encourages calcium to stick to pool tile.

The water should have a pH of around 7.3 and alkalinity near 100. Use a water testing kit to see if the balance caused your calcium buildup problems.

If the test shows a high pH, lower it to the recommended level. If there is a calcium buildup treat the water with a calcium hardness dissolving remover. Sodium bisulfate removers are okay for occasional use. Most prefer to use muriatic acid because it doesnt add sulfates to the water.

What Is Building Up On Your Waterline Tiles

Waterline tiles are often subjected to scale or stains building up on the surface. Staining can occur due to a chemical imbalance or as a result of organic material such as leaves and soil clinging on to the surface for an extended period of time.

When the pool water naturally evaporates, calcium deposits can attach to the sides. This calcium scaling will appear as a white-gray colored scum and can be problematic to remove. Generally speaking, there are two types of scaling you may find on your waterline pool tiles:

Removing Calcium Carbonate Scaling

If your pool has calcium carbonate deposits, you can remove them with a pumice stone, stain eraser or scale remover.

A pumice stone should only be used on hard surfaces, such as tile and concrete. Simply use the stone to scrub the deposits. To prevent scratching, be sure to keep both the stone and the surface youre scrubbing wet.

Many commercially available stain erasers will also remove calcium carbonate. These products are designed to be applied in a specific area, so they often attach to a vac pole for easy application. If you decide to use a stain eraser, follow the manufacturers instructions.

Pool suppliers also carry calcium scaling treatments that are safe for all pool surfaces, including fiberglass, vinyl liner pools and concrete pools. These treatments are added to the pools water and dissolve the deposits over a period of several weeks.

Scale Be Gone – Removes SCALE From Pool Tiles & Vinyl Liners

Although the slick surface of vinyl liners can make calcium scale less likely to form, scale can deposit on vinyl liners when conditions are right.

As opposed to metal stains on liners, mineral scale can be felt with your hands and feet, rough and scaly to the touch. In extreme cases, it can be very rough and snag swimsuits and give the kids a bad case of pool toe.

To remove scale from vinyl pools, you have to be a bit more careful than other pool types, to avoid damaging the vinyl or making it look worse. The Stain Eraser for vinyl pools is tough enough for stains and scale, and works great for small scale problems.

For waterline scale on a vinyl pool: lower the water level and spray white vinegar from a spray bottle. Spray a few feet, then scrub the surface with a textured sponge or scrubber, then rinse off. Most visible scale will need an acid stronger than vinegar, however. Add 4-8 oz. of Acid Magic or Instant Liquid Acid to a cup of water in a spray bottle, and repeat the process. Tile patterns can be removed from your liner if the acid is too strong, so test in small areas and gradually work-up in strength.

For all-over scale in a vinyl pool, an accepted treatment is to:

  • Add a full dose of Stain Away or Scale Free to lock-up calcium scale.
  • Lower the pH level to 6.5 for two days*, brushing the pool 2-3x per day.
  • Return pH level to 7.4-7.6 continue with maintenance doses of Stain Away.

In a word, yes. It can be. The emphasis of this danger is usually placed on blue-green algae, though.

Cyanobacteria blooms in natural bodies of water can kill other organisms and animals that live in that water by blocking sunlight and hoarding oxygen and other nutrients. This isnt something you need to worry about in your pool.

But cyanobacteria also make cyanotoxins, which are among the most powerful natural poisons in the world. They can make you, your pets, and any other animals that might find their way into your pool sick.

Just swimming in water infected with black algae can be enough to cause illness. But the probability and severity of illness is increased if you accidentally drink infected water.

If you have black algae in your pool, and your kids accidentally swallow pool water while theyre horsing around, they could experience anything from nausea and stomach cramps to liver damage. And have you ever seen your dog take a drink from the pool? Theyre in just as much danger of becoming sick if the water is infected with black algae.

You must be able to identify black algae as soon as it appears, and take immediate action to get rid of it.
