Maple Park Pool Underwent Restoration This Spring

timer

Two Welland public pools will open Friday, with the third opening July 1.

A city release said recreation and culture ambassadors will aid visitors.

Rosie Smith Memorial Pool at St. George Park and Memorial Park Pool open Friday, followed by Maple Park Pool, which has undergone restoration work, next Thursday.

The free-to-use pools will be open daily noon to 4 p.m. and then 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with cleaning breaks every 90 minutes. The pools will be emptied of swimmers during those cleaning breaks, which will see hard surface areas scrubbed down.

COVID-19 prevention measures will be in place, including controlled access and screening, with restrictions on the number of people to allow for physical distancing. Theres also the potential for a time limit to maximize public access.

Washrooms and change rooms will be open. There is no storage of belongings in change areas and all items must remain with users on the pool deck.

Poolgoers are asked to avoid bringing food, lawn chairs and large items into the pool area. Those items are allowed in the parks next to each pool.

Though the swimming pools are open, wading pools at St. George and Maple parks will remain closed until further notice.

The city said there will be no private pool rentals for the 2021 season, though that may be reconsidered.

Life Jackets And Pool Toys

Is it safe to go to public pools this summer?

Lifejackets, personal floatation devices, water wings, “pool noodles” and other floatation devices do not keep you safe in the pool. This equipment can be fun, but it is not a replacement for adult supervision!

Lifejackets and personal floatation devices must fit correctly to work. We don’t recommend water wings as they can deflate or slip, leaving a child dangling under water.

What Not To Bring

Youll need to leave food, glass bottles, electronic devices, and newspapers at home. Unbound periodicals tend to blow around and create litter, food can be messy to clean up after, and theres too much water around to make sure your electronics stay safe. Just to be on the safe side, we also recommend leaving valuables like jewelry and credit cards at home.

Supervisory Standards In City Pools

High-risk people must be in a ratio of 1:1. High-risk people have a condition or illness that may put them at risk in a pool, such as frequent seizures or fainting conditions. This includes people who are unable to control their behaviour or impulses and require direct supervision. The supervisory ratios for groups of high-risk people will be determined by pool staff based on the specific needs of the people and their associated risks. We recommend you call the pool before you visit.
