How To Get Rid Of Foam In A Hot Tub
The first place to start is to check your pool / hot tub chemicals, and balance water and shock to see if the tub maintains a good residual sanitizer level afterwards.
If it does, then keep an eye on levels going forward and the issue should be resolved.
If the foam remains it may be caused by a buildup of oils and/or soaps and you can add a hot tub sponge
If foam is still present then the next step is to treat the tub for biofilm.
Again, there are several products on the market that can be used. One of the most popular is Ahh-some.
Once the tub has been cleaned, drained, and the new water has been balanced then the issue should be resolved.

Encourage Showering Before Use
Public pools require you to shower before use because your body is coated in pollutants that can be easily transferred into the water.
Things like body oils, skin cells, sunblock, lotions, soap and shampoo residue can all add to water problems and lead to scum formation. Showering beforehand will remove most of those from the equation.

Brown Foam In Hot Tub
Theres nothing quite as relaxing as soaking in a hot tub and letting the warm water circulate around you. But sometimes, when we open the lid, we see a lot of foam. So why do hot tubs foam?
Heres what Ive seen:
Hot tubs can create foam due to an excess of body oils, lotions, body care products, or other contaminants in the water. But high pH or soft water can also lead to hot tub foam. Additionally, water that hasnt been changed in over 3 months will be prone to foaming.
But dont confuse hot tub foam with bubbles. When you turn on the jets, the water gets aerated, producing bubbles, which should disperse under normal conditions when the jets are turned off.
But thats just a quick answer.
So in this article, well get very specific about the difference between bubbles from the jets and foam. But well also look at exactly what products we tend to put on our bodies that tend to cause the most foam.
And well talk about how to fix it if you have this issue. And well even get into the 1 way that works to get rid of it without having to drain your hot tub.

You Have A Filtration Issue
If your swimming pool filter is compromised, you can develop a scum issue that manifests as aqua colored water.
The majority of tubs use a cartridge filter , which can last between 12 and 24 months. However, you have to rinse them every 2 to 3 weeks, and deep clean them every 3 months.
With daily contaminants passing through the filter, they can become ineffective in a short period of time if you arent regularly cleaning them.
Also, as the months pass, these filters can tear or break down. By staying aware of its condition, youll be able to quickly swap it out for a new one before any major water problems occur.

Have You Definately Got A Foam Problem
Before we start looking at the ways to get rid of the foam lets make sure that you do actually have a phone problem in the first place! Remember that when the hot tub jets are on, the water will get very bubbly anyway. In fact, some more sophisticated hot tub manufacturers include systems that increase the amount of bubbles deliberately. To check whether or not you have a real foam problem switch the hot tub jets off and then wait for a good minute or so. If you still have bubbles or foam after a minute then you probably do have a problem. The bubbles will probably be relatively large and a bit sticky to the touch.
To a certain extent all hot tubs will have a little bit of foam sometimes and this need not be a massive problem. However, whenever the foam starts to build up or clump together then it really is time to start addressing the issue. Not only does it look unpleasant but the foam can also harbor harmful bacteria that can easily be passed on to bathers.
Drain Clean And Refill The Spa
If youve done everything from skimming the water to replacing the filter, and you just cant get rid of that last bit of scum that seems to be clinging to your hot tub for dear life, youre left with one option: drain and clean your hot tub.
This is the last resort for addressing hot tub scum because, admittedly, its a hassle. Its something you should be doing quarterly anyway, so having to tackle this big job in between regular drainings is irksome.
But if its between that and soaking in scummy water well, you do the math.

How To Get Rid Of Hot Tub Foam
Once you have definitely got foam in your hot tub there are a number of things that you can try to get rid of it. All of these are water maintenance related and you will find that, even if you forget to carry out your routine maintenance for a short while, you risk foam and cloudy water build-up in your hot tub. Its also possible that you will get foam even if you do keep up with your water maintenance and foamy water in this instance most likely means that you are ready for a complete water change.
Lets have a look at how to get rid of foam from your hot tub step by step. We will start off with the easiest possible solutionss and work our way through from there. Hopefully your foam problem will be solved by the first two or three points on the list but if not, carry on working your way down the list until you have solved the problem.
Check total alkalinity and PH levels The first thing to do is to get a test strip and test your total alkalinity and pH levels. Simply dip the test strip into the hot tub water and then check the color with the color chart on the test strip pot. The total alkalinity of the hot tub water should be between 100 and 120 parts per million.
If, after adjusting the pH levels the foaming clears up, then it can be a good idea to give your filters a good clean. This applies to any of the methods below. Once the foam has cleared then cleaning the filters will make sure that any debris, dirt or foamy residue is dealt with.
How To Get Rid Of Hot Tub Scum Gunk Or Slime
No one likes uninvited guests, but if you dont pay attention to the water chemistry in your hot tub, you may just end up with some.
Hot tub scum is one such party crasher thats sometimes referred to as gunk or slime . Whatever you call it, its not only visually unappealing, but it upsets the tub water to a serious point of contamination.

Your Water Contains Too Much Copper
If the scum is turning the water green, theres a good chance its due to a high copper level in the tub.
When copper mixes with water and chemicals, oxidation occurs, which turns the copper green.
This process is famously present on the Statue of Liberty, as well as on the roofs of historic buildings. These are all covered in an outer layer of copper which oxidized green when exposed to air.
Prevent That Scum Ring From Forming
If you are getting tired of cleaning those scum rings day in and day out, perhaps its time to try and stop them before they ever have a chance of forming around your spa. How do you do that? Sometimes, you may get the ring no matter how much effort you put into preventing it. However, there are several things you can do to stop it from forming. At the very least you wont have to clean off a ring quite as often.

Clean Drain And Refill The Hot Tub
If everything else above fails, then the only way to really get rid of your foamy water is to do a complete drain, clean and refill of your hot tub. Generally speaking, you will need to do this every 3 months or so anyway depending upon how much use the hot tub has had and how good your maintenance schedule is. You can also test to see if its time to do a water change by measuring the amount of total dissolved solids or TDSs in the water. If the level is 1500 parts per million or higher than its definitely time to change the water.

Clean the lines Add a flushing fluid to the hot tub water and then run the jets for a good half hour or so so that the fluid has time to circulate around all of the components of the hot tub. The flushing solution should loosen any bits of dirt, bacteria or algae growth from within the hot tub and leave them floating in the water ready to be drained away.
Remove the filters Take the filters out and either give them a deep chemical clean or replace them if its time to do that.
Drain the water Undo the drain plug and allow the water to drain away. You can use a sump pump if you want to to speed up the process.
Replace the filters Replace the filters with either the cleaned filters or with new filters .

Although theres plenty of preventative measures that can be taken to avoid hot tub problems, it goes without saying that they happen to the best of us. Hot tub water problems are not uncommon, and as a hot tub owner, youll almost certainly experience foamy, milky, or cloudy water at some point. Filling The Hot Tub With Cloudy Water
If you notice your hot tub cloudy and foamy immediately after filling, it could be the source of your water causing cloudy hot tub water. If youre uncertain of the source of the fill water in your hot tub, its a good idea to check where the source water is coming from. You want to make sure you arent starting out with cloudy spa water right off the bat. Is the water coming from a nearby lake or well? If so, it might contain tannins or oxidized minerals such as iron oxide that may be producing cloudy spa water.
Dirty Or Worn Out Filter
Your filters job is to keep the hot tub water clean. It cant very well do its job if its dirty. And at some point, cleaning the filter wont be enough to keep it functioning properly, and youll need to replace it.
Until you either clean or replace your filter, all those nasty things that cause hot tub scum will just pass right through the filter that can no longer capture them, and end up right back in the water.
