Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation Water Park Dragon Fun

Our swim team mascot is the Sea Dragons, says Eric Mehl, Assistant Director of the Monon Community Center, an outdoor water park. When we saw that Soft Play had a floatable dragon and we could customize it with our team colors, we were really excited. We nicknamed it Dotty the Dragon.

The city of Carmel is a fast-growing suburb north of Indianapolis and, according to Mehl, the Parks Department recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Initially comprised of areas of green space and playgrounds, residents expressed a need for a community center where they could exercise, meet and take their children.

Carmel Clay Parks Monon Community Center first opened its doors in 2007, and is located on the popular Monon Trail, part of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, which is a nationwide network of trails created from former rail lines. The 146,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility includes The Waterpark.

When we first opened the water park in 2007, Soft Play provided our original cargo net and water walk, says Mehl, who adds that the equipment stood up to intense use and outdoor elements wonderfully. But, after eight years, it was time for a refresh.

Mehl called Soft Play to see what was available.

Soft Play finishes its water play elements for water parks with UV- and chlorine-stable, abrasion-resistant, HydroTuff coatings, specifically designed for environments that require resistance to high acid and alkali conditions.

From winding slides, exciting rides, lazy rivers, cool clear pools, to great kiddie activity areas, youll be kept cool and soaking wet. Grab your swim suit, come out to the park and get ready to make some great memories.

Lets have a look at the best water parks in Indiana:

    The kiddie pool

This pool and its accessible zero-depth entry is for toddlers . A tree house at the center gives kids a chance to explore, climb, slide and splash.

    The FlowRider

This one is Indianas only simulated surf machine and one you won’t want to leave the park without trying.

You can bring your own surfboard or borrow one from the park to surf the waves that will be coming at you at about 30 mph.

There are a few rules to keep in mind:

    • You must be at least 48 inches tall to get in, and you will have to sign a waiver prior to riding.
    • Follow all instructions from the lifeguards.
    • Since you will be battling fast-moving water, wear a bathing suit that won’t come off or the staff will suggest you put on a cover-up.

A list of all rules and precautions can be found at

    The Lazy River

This one is my personal favorite because it involves close to no physical activity.

Grab one of the park tubes and enjoy floating the lazy river, all day if you want. If you make the river loop eight times, then you will know you have done a mile.

    The AquaClimb, AKA The Wall

It’s kind of like rock-climbing but a bit more challenging since there is no harness. The upside, though, is if you fall, you know you will make a big splash in the pool.

You can choose your own path as you climb up. Once you are at the top, slap your hand on the sign and then take the plunge.

This one is recommended for strong swimmers. The pool is about 12 feet deep.

For tots theres a zero-depth activity pool as well as a great kiddie pool for children of all ages. The park also features a lap swimming pool and all pools are heated to at least seventy-eight degrees.
