How Long Can Pool Sit Without Pump

Above Ground Pool Care & Maintenance – The Ultimate Guide

A pool can only be safe for swimming without a pump for a few days and a maximum of one week. The definite number of days the pool will be safe will also depend on the temperatures of the water, the weather at that particular time, the level of chlorine, and how clean the pool was before the pump stopped functioning.

Good Pool Maintenance Begins With Knowing Your Pool

Before you can properly enjoy or care for your pool, you might need to brush up on all the parts of your pool. You dont need to take an annex course or go for your doctorate in swimology from Harvard. But knowing the basic parts of your pool, and their functions, helps you keep everything running smoothlyand makes it easier to resolve issues when they occur.

Test And Balance Pool Water 2

Using a test kit or test strips, test your water at least 2 or 3 times each week, then make adjustments as needed with water balancing chemicals. Test for pH and Free Available Chlorine often, as they tend to fluctuate more quickly than other chemicals. Add pH Increaser or pH Decreaser to keep pH levels between 7.4 – 7.6. Keep Free Available Chlorine levels between 2.0-4.0 ppm, and shock the pool if you need to bring the levels up, or if this number differs from Total Available Chlorine levels. Total Alkalinity should stay between 80-120 ppm to help buffer pH levels.

Use Ph Adjusters For Your Swimming Pool

Adjusting your pH is relatively straightforward.

While following normal pool maintenance routines, it should be taken care of. If not, then use one of the following.

Alkaline Tablets:Suppose the pH level has risen to high. If that is the case, then at an alkaline tablet. Afterward, it should lower quite a bit.

Pool Shock:On the other hand, if things have become too basic, then you should talk about the water. That way, its pH will rise.

Add Algaecide And Clarifier

How do You Take Care of an Above Ground Pool?

A good quality algaecide, such as Leslie’s Algae Control or Copper Algaecide, works with your chlorine to prevent and eliminate algae before it blooms out of control. Algaecide destroys the protective outer layers of an algae cell, allowing chlorine to penetrate to the nucleus and destroy it. Clarifier is a coagulant, which attracts very tiny particles together into larger, more easily filtered clumps. Using a pool clarifier, such as Leslie’s Ultra Bright Advanced, will help boost filter efficiency, reduce sanitizer workload, and help keep your water crystal clear. These two chemicals can significantly help you as you work to maintain your above ground pool.

Tips For Maintaining An Above

  • Email

As lovely as in-ground pools sound, they’re not always feasible to install in the backyard, whether it’s because of the cost, the space available, or the type of soil in the back. An above-ground pool, however, could be an option for enjoying the water during warmer months.

Above-ground swimming pools range from economical models to more luxurious styles. Many can be enjoyed throughout the year, and some use saltwater systems, which are popular with in-ground models. Above-ground pools also have options for solar heating systems and energy-efficient covers.

Contemporary models may have upgraded features that are usually seen in in-ground models, including advanced filtration systems and pumps to keep them clean. However, even above-ground pools that have built-in systems need a little hands-on work regularly to stay clean and in good working condition.

  • It’s tempting to put off above-ground pool maintenance, but you will pay for it later through water problems or pool liner issues, which are expensive to fix. To ensure that you’re taking proper care of the pool, follow a daily and weekly pool maintenance checklist.

    Complete these tasks daily:

  • Test the pH level to ensure it’s between 7.4 and 7.6.
  • Test the chlorine level, which should be between 2.0 and 4.0 ppm.
  • Check the water level, which should be around mid-skimmer.
  • Empty the skimmer and pump baskets.
  • Check filter pressure and pump operation.
  • Skim the surface of the water.

Put Together A Cleaning And Maintenance Schedule

The number one thing I recommend every new above-ground pool owner do is put together a scheduled routine for maintaining and cleaning the pool.

This puts you into a proactive position, staying ahead of potential problems.

Yes, this will require some time that could be better spent enjoying your pool, but when you compare the amount of time that reacting to pool problems, whether its having to shock the water, buy a new pump and filter, or having to hand scrub an inch of algae off the pool walls, a little proactive scheduling will save you a ton of time down the road.

Get The Right Pool Chemicals

How to maintain above ground pool

We all know the main pool chemical that is used for disinfecting the water, and that is our old-buddy-old-pal chlorine.

Pool chlorine is crucial for drop-kicking algae, bacteria and other microorganisms that can quickly turn our pool into a disease pit.

Available as tablets , they are easy to add to your pool and can even be placed in floating pool chemical dispensers for hands off application.

This pool maintenance task is easy. For example, a 3 chlorine tablet is often enough to keep a 10,000-gallon pool properly chlorinated for a week.

Shock Your Pool Water

Shocking is a term that means adding a concentrated amount of chlorine or other chemicals to your pool to destroy the chloramines that have built up in your pool. Shocking is also known as super-chlorination, and essentially means you are super-chlorinating your pool when needed.

You only need to shock your pool water if it hasnt been maintained well enough or adequately treated with the right amount of chemicals. Your water could need a shock treatment solely for excess use of your pool. Too many people in a pool can cause products and chemicals from suntan lotion, sunscreen, face cream, makeup, hairspray, oils from your hair and skin, to be added to your pool. These unnatural additives can quickly lead to excess bacteria and other chemicals that can cause algae buildup and can cause your pool to become unbalanced.

Testing your pool for chlorine and chloramine can help you decide whether or not it needs a shock treatment. Shock treatments might be necessary every week or hardly ever depending on how well you maintain your pool and how often it is used.

Vacuuming And Brushing An Above Ground Pool

How To Take Care Of An Intex Above Ground Pool

No matter how powerful your pump is, there will always be areas where the water circulates less freely. These are hot spots for algae growth. To keep your pool free of large and small debris, it is important to vacuum the walls and floor of the pool at least once a week. There are also automatic vacuums that can move around the floor of your pool and pick up stray garbage. However, even with an automatic cleaner, the pool walls and floor will need to be brushed one a week.

To brush the pool, use a brush attached to the end of a swimming pool extension pole. You can get an extension pole at any swimming pool store and many home improvement stores. Its a great tool to have. It can be fitted with a brush, a skimmer, or a vacuum and extends your reach so you can get at the whole pool easily. Almost all above ground pools require a brush with nylon bristles. This is what you should use unless the pool manufacturers instructions specifically say otherwise.

Make sure to brush the whole surface of the pools walls and floor. Even a small missed spot can harbor algae, which will quickly regrow if not knocked loose. Brush first, before vacuuming. Brushing loosens up all of the algae or dirt that is stuck to the walls and floor of your pool so that the vacuum can suck them up and remove them from the water.

    Above Ground Pool Care Basics

Use a skimmer basket to remove leaves, insects, and other debris from the surface. If you havent cleared your pump basket, located at the base of your pump housing, since last season, do so now. This basket gets filled with debris often and should be checked on at least once a week when the pump is running.

Grab the pump and reconnect all of the hoses and cords. Once youve turned the pump on, youll be able to check for any sign of leakage indicating that some parts may need replacement.

Sometimes, pumps need to be primed before theyll function properly. If youre having trouble with your pump, check the owners manual and find out what you can do to get it back in tiptop shape!

If you have an above ground pool, you likely have an automatic pool cleaner in addition to your pump basket. Make sure this is also clean and hook it back up so it can start filtering out the debris that falls into your water.

Keep Dirt And Grass Out Of The Pool

One of the things new pool owners are most surprised by is how quickly the water can get dirty and cloudy. This is partly due to swimmers hoping in the water and sweating, peeing, and leaving oil in the water.

Another sneaky intruder is dirt and grass coming in on the feet of swimmers entering the pool. A simple solution is having a bin that pool guests rinse their feet in before hopping into the water.

This is especially crucial for above-ground pools that dont have a deck and are surrounded by dirt, grass, and mud. Tracking all of that stuff into the pool will turn the water un-swimmable in a hurry.
