What Are The Typical Pool Liner Replacement Costs

How Long Should an Above Ground Pool Pump Last?

Though the figure varies, pool liner replacement may be costly. Homeowners can expect to pay for a new inground or above-ground pool liner. Though the same size, this liner will likely be more expensive than their last due to inflation. Its price could range from $350 to $2000 per new liner, depending on its size and type.

How long a pool liner lasts also affects the costs of its replacement. The warranty payout could be around 50% to 10% of the original liner value, depending on its age. Essentially, unless replacement unexpectedly occurs during the first few years of the warranty, the customer may pay out most of the costs.

Additionally, water and labor will need to get factored in. Inground and above-ground pool liner warranties hardly ever cover these costs. This figure may range from around $1,000 to $3,000 for labor and water, depending on local hourly wages and water prices. As one can see, the overall costs to replace a pool liner may quickly spiral into thousands of dollars.

Can You Put A New Pool Liner Over An Old One

Yes, you can put a liner over an old one, but its much better to replace the old liner with a new one if possible.

If you have a large number of wrinkles in your pool, then youre going to need to get a new cover or liner. If there are just a few and theyre mainly on the corners or along the seams, then it may be something that can be fixed by adding water to help protect your pump/filter system.

How Long Does A Swimming Pool Last

When youre considering making an investment in a swimming pool, its important to gather as much information as you can before deciding what to do. Since there are many different types of pools, each of which comes with unique benefits, you want to make sure youre getting whats right for you and your family.

One of the most important questions to ask yourself: How long will your pool last? Do you prefer to spend a little less now, but need to perform more frequent maintenance, or do you want to spend a little more now, requiring less frequent maintenance?

Close Your Pool For The Winter

As mentioned already, freezing temperatures and swimming pools dont mix too well. Water expands as it freezes, which can potentially damage your plumbing, your liner, and your pump filter.

This is why most pools have to go through an opening and closing cycle every year, which involves deep cleaning, shocking, balancing, and covering the pool beforeopening it up again several months later.

Starting this process too late or not at all can render your pool useless when summer finally comes back around. Besides, who wants to swim in subzero temperatures?

Protect The Pool Walls

Unlike inground pools, above ground pools have less sturdy walls that can be prone to collapse. Swimmers should avoid leaning or sitting on the rails of the wall. Over time, they can become warped. By simply not sitting on the rails, you can sleep happily, knowing that your pool will be around for many years to come.

The Pool Liner Is Faded Or Discolored

With age, a pool liner will also lose its natural color in the sun and perhaps even darken in areas. Not only can this be unsightly. It may also warn that the vinyls structural integrity may no longer be as it was when new. Algae and rust stains may also contribute to the pool liners discoloration and be challenging to remove.

The Lifespan Of An Above Ground Pool Can Depend On Where You Live

I have lived in and installed the vast majority of my pools in Central Florida. Here, the summer is brutally long and the sun is quite hot.

Above ground pools wont last as long in an environment like Central Florida as opposed to someplace like south Minnesota. It may get just as hot in St. Paul, but only for two weeks. This makes a big difference when talking lifespans of pools.

As a moderator of a large Facebook group of above ground pool owners , I have read of many people living in the North and getting several years out of their inexpensive Intex soft-side pools. This matters when you are talking about a 2-3 month swim season versus a 6-8 month season somewhere in Texas.

If youre the type of person that can milk every minute of life out of a tube of toothpaste, an old lawnmower, or a used mattress, then good for you. Im sure your back feels great pulling on the mower to start it every time and then sleeping in an old soft bowl every night.

For those not planning on trying to set duration records, the above lifespan chart for above ground pools will be fairly accurate.

Not Sure If Your Pool Needs Replacing

How Long Will My Doughboy Pool Last?

If you are in one of the following six scenarios, maybe I can help with an answer.

Lets play the yes, no, or maybe game. Wait. Were talking about above ground pools so it should be mostly called the maybe game.

1) My pool is leaking badly MAYBE

Most things that hold water will eventually leak. Its a fact so dont freak when it happens to you. Chances are the pool doesnt need replacing. Its liner may need to be replaced though. So, find my blog post on how to find a leak in an above ground pool and go from there.

If you find the leak and also find a very rusty pool wall, then it could be yes.

2) My pool looks faded and the rails are saggy and cracked NO

Just because your pool looks old and faded from the sun doesnt mean it needs replacing. You may not like the way it looks, but as long as it safely holds the water, you are good. Some paint their pool walls and replace the top rails . Some will also build a new deck and add lattice to hide the pool and thats nice. You can always replace it too. Ive seen many people replace a good working pool because they didnt like the way it looked and thats OK too. Its your money and your backyard and you shouldnt have to feel negative when you go back there to enjoy the pool.

3) My pool keeps turning green NO

Also, if your pool leaks and you have to keep adding water, fix the leak. It will make a huge difference in maintaining the pool. So, quit living with the leak and fix it.

4) My top rails are rusty MAYBE

The Pool Liner Is Leaking Due To Cracks Punctures Or Tears

One of the most obvious signs that its time to replace a pool liner is if its leaking. Small tears, punctures, and cracks may slowly leach out water, leading to more frequent refills. If small, these can get patched if they can get found. However, attending to them as soon as possible is a must. Otherwise, leaks may wash away soil and erode pool walls, potentially causing dangerous sinkholes underneath or around a pool.

How Long Do Above

Above-ground pools are indeed cheaper than in-ground pools. But how long do above-ground pools last? The lifespan varies greatly depending on the type of materials used. The pool itself can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years, while the pool liner will only last around 5 years. This means that you will need to regularly replace major parts of the pool- and these expenses will add up over time.

How Long Does A Pool Liner Last 6 Ways To Extend Its Lifespan

  • 6 minute read

When installing a pool, most homeowners expect it to last a few decades without significantly costly repairs or maintenance. However, this timeframe may be affected for those who chose a pool liner instead of a fiberglass pool. While most pool liners feature a 20- to 30-year warranty, their lifespan is generally around a quarter of it.

Furthermore, both inground and above-ground pool liner warranties may not cover customers for as much of the replacement costs as expected. As a result, homeowners often have to pay a lot out-of-pocket to replace their pool liner sooner than anticipated.

Those looking to save themselves the trouble and some money may benefit from knowing more about pool liners. Particularly how long does a pool liner last and how to extend an inground or above-ground pool liners lifespan. This post covers all consumers need to know about pool liner longevity and maintenance.

They Wont Last Forever

How Long Do Above Ground Pools Last? 5 Things It Depends On

Unfortunately, the fact is that above ground pools wont last forever. Eventually, youll need to repair them or replace them altogether. That said, a good quality above ground pool should last at least 10 to 20 years. That doesnt mean that your pool wont last a lot longer than that or that youll never have to repair or replace a pool thats been installed for less than 10 years. There are a lot of different factors that contribute to the longevity of a pool.

Wrinkling Slipping Or Stretching Liners

The symptoms mentioned above can often be hard to detect unless you are keenly observant. However, you may notice certain areas of the pool liner wrinkling over time. Although this is mainly age-related, other factors like the chemicals used, the suns UV rays, or how much the pool is used can also affect it.

Pool owners generally tend to replace the liners to update their pool design or enhance its look. Cracked or wrinkled liners can damage the aesthetics and overall value.

Issues like a slippery liner can be hazardous to those using the pool. Several pool-related accidents occur due to worn-out liners. To avoid this problem, get it replaced right away.

It is common for pool liners to lose their elasticity over time so dont worry. If you notice the liner beads slipping out from specific areas or loose fittings in some places, the liner may be overstretched. Replace it at the earliest to avoid costly repairs and maintenance later on.

The 4 Most Common Above Ground Pool Types

You’ve decided it’s time – no more suffering through Oklahoma summers. You are ready to invest in an above ground pool!

As you start doing your Google research, as any good consumer does, you realize it may not be quite that simple. Above ground pools come in a variety of shapes, sizes and price points and you quickly realize you aren’t exactly sure which type of above ground pool will fit your needs best.

Lucky you – we are going to introduce you to the primary types of above ground pools and give you our thoughts on their pros / cons so you spend your money wisely!

Easy Set / Inflatable Above Ground Pool

First up – we are going to look at the pools you see everywhere – all the big box retailers carry them – Intex Easy Set / Inflatable Blow Up Pools. I’m not going to go into a whole lot of detail on these – you’ve seen them… You inflate the top ring and then begin filling the pool. As you add water, the top ring begins to float allowing the walls to expand into the size you purchased. You can get this type of pool as large as 18′ round and 48″ depth.

Cons – generally the equipment that comes with these pools is not adequately sized for the water volume, so they can be challenging to keep clean, often requiring you to drain and refill them. Additionally, the pool ‘wall’ can tear easily and begin leaking, and they generally only last 1, maybe 2 summers.

How Do You Update An Old Inground Pool

Giving an old swimming pool a facelift is an excellent opportunity to not only update your backyard and boost the value of your property, but also to increase your and your loved ones safety by incorporating modern safety features.

Consider doing some or all of the following:

  • Replace old tiles with a brand new layer of ceramic tile.

A popular option in the warmer parts of America is to spruce up your swimming pool by using glistening iridescent glass tiles.

  • Incorporate a mosaic.

Adding mosaics is an easy and budget-friendly way to give your pool a personalized, timeless look.

  • Change coping.

The edging material between the deck and the pool structure is called coping, and basically serves to frame your swimming pool. Replacing the old coping with a brand new concrete, safety-grip brick, flagstone, or even marble coping is never a bad idea.

  • Include water features.

Water features such as waterfalls, fountains, and deck-based laminar jets can really make a pool stand out while also making it more fun to use.

  • My Three Categories Of Above Ground Pools

How Long Do Fiberglass Pools Last?

There is a huge difference between a cheap $300 one-box-fits-all Walmart above ground pool and two pallets, $12,000 semi-inground pool package. I know, DUH, right?

Since above ground swimming pools are considered the two above extremes and everything between, I have to now separate above ground pool types into three categories. This way, youll know better how long what you buy will last.

The longevity of the pool also depends on the type of above-ground pool you have installed. The frame structure determines the type of pool, while other elements like liner, filter system, ladder, or pool deck can be added later.

The Main Factors That Determine How Long Your Above Ground Pool Will Last

    Climate

If you live in a warm climate, your above-ground pool will last longer.

Simply put, pools that are protected from the wind, show, and other elements dont have to be replaced as often.

    Pool Material

If your above-ground pool is made of plastic, it wont last as long as vinyl liner pools.

However, these are also much more expensive!

If you do opt for a vinyl pool, be sure to keep an eye on the seams as they are typically the first thing to show wear and tear.

    Pools with covers

Above-ground pools that have solid covers tend to last much longer, as the added protection from sunlight helps prevent fading or cracking.

Its not uncommon for someone who has a 12 gauge ring top pool cover to get over 10 years out of their above-ground experience!

    Regular Maintenance

You have to make sure you keep the water clean, and that its well-maintained. Otherwise, your pool will fall apart.

There are many factors that can make your pool last longer. Above-ground pools have less stress on the structure than in-ground pools because they dont need to be buried underground.

If you want to keep your above-ground pool going strong, follow these tips!

    • Cleaning the filter regularly,
    • keeping chlorine levels at an appropriate level,
    • making sure theres enough water in the pool are all important steps for maintaining a healthy swimming environment.
