How Much Does It Cost To Build A Pool

Time Lapse: Building an Inground Swimming Pool

Another common question asked by homeowners is the cost of pool construction. Well, pool construction costs vary depending on the type of pool. But prepare to spend thousands of dollars if you plan to construct an inground pool. An inground swimming pool measuring 32 by 16 feet costs about $22,000. Needless to say, the price depends on the type of pool contractor and the type of pool. However, concrete pools are the most costly, while vinyl pools are the cheapest. Vinyl pools go for about $25,700. Fiberglass pools, on the other hand, go for approximately $31,400, according to P.K data.

Building The Pool Shell 1 To 4 Weeks

The type of pool shell material you choose will affect how long this installation takes. Fiberglass pools come preassembled.

Once excavation is done a fiberglass pool can be installed and plumbing attached in a day. Vinyl on steel pool are assembled on site. Pool kits are bolted together, braces installed on pool walls and the concrete installed on the pool floor, the pool deck and around the plumbing walls on the outside of the pool.

Concrete pools by far take the longest to install. From framing to rebar to concrete poring and setting and finally surface finishing, gunite pools can take up to eight weeks to install.

Vinyl Liner

This type of pool is ideal for those who want to enjoy the benefits of a completely customizable pool without the luxury price tag. Vinyl liner pools are still the most popular pool today. Pool walls are usually steel or polymer and both are assembled on site.

Vinyl liner pools have concrete floors and either finished concrete decks or subdecks overlaid with pavers or natural stone. The time it takes to build a vinyl liner pool will vary depending on the type of pool and complexity of the project.

Bonus: Vinyl liner pools are ideal for cooler climates. They are less vulnerable than concrete pools to freeze/thaw cycles. Most new liners manufactured today also offer greater UV protection and come with aglae inhibitors built in.

Installing The Pool 1

After the pool plumbing, the next step would be to install the pool. At this stage, it depends on the type of pool. For example, if you are constructing a concrete pool, you would spray concrete over the steel framework using a high-velocity hose. On the other hand, if you are installing a fiberglass pool, it takes about a week to finish construction. But on average, installing the pool takes about one to three weeks. Even so, keep in mind that gunite and shotcrete pools are likely to take longer due to the curing process.

Excavating The Pool 1 Week

After obtaining the pool construction permits, your pool builder will come onsite to start on pool construction. They first dig up your pool area to create space for the pool. While doing this, they get rid of any debris in the pool area. Depending on how many people are onsite, this process usually takes a maximum of 7 days. If you have three or more pool builders excavating the pool area, this process can be complete within 2 to 3 days.

Do Gunite Pools Take Forever

No gunite pools they do not take forever, especially when you choose a quality builder. On average, they will take from forty five to seventy five days to be constructed. The reason that these pools take substantially longer than the other types of constriction is due in part to that they must have a twenty eight to thirty day cure time. From the time the shotcrete is applied, or the gunite is shot, the pool must cure. Although there is ancillary work that can go on while the pool cures, the pools interior finish cannot be applied. This generally provides a longer construction time. There is more labor involved in these types of pools as well as more detailed finishing work. This may include placing tile on the steps, around the perimeter of the pool and spa, and any other finishing material the end users desires. Seasonal conditions such as the time of the year and temperature, may also affect these types of pools. The time will also vary depending on the location of where the pool is installed, as well as the number of inspections required by the township. The nature and complexity of the project may also lengthen the time.

Why It Could Take Longer

How Long Does it Take to Install an In-Ground Swimming Pool

Pool projects can take longer than average for all sorts of reasons. Some issues become clear during the planning stages. Others show up as nasty surprises after the digging has started. Heres a list of the most common factors that add time to a project:

PermitsBefore installation can even begin, youll need to have all required pool permits in order. This could take days, weeks, or even months, depending on the type of pool and the building regulations in your area.

Builder and Subcontractor SchedulesFirst off, you have to get on the pool builders schedule, which could be tough depending on the time of year and how busy they are. However, the project is also dependent on the availability of subcontractors, who may be playing catchup on other projects.

Waterfalls and other fancy water features obviously increase the time it takes to install an inground pool.

Size and FeaturesThe estimates above are for typical inground pools. Obviously, if youre planning something elaborate or out of the ordinary, it could take longer to receive materials and/or complete the work.

The SiteMaybe you dont have adequate pathways for heavy equipment. Maybe the ground needs to be leveled out and a retaining wall installed. In a multitude of ways, the site you choose for your pool could complicate things for your builder and add time to the project.

Regarding Rock And Ground Water

In the previous section, we mentioned that hitting rock or groundwater can be an unexpected complication in the excavation process. Unless youve had soil testing done , it can easily become a hidden expense.

Be prepared, not only by having a soils test performed, but by asking your pool builder what their plan is for handling such situations if and when they arise.

Rock

Typically, if you hit a lot of rock during the excavation, you have 4 options:

Ground Water

Here, you only have 2 options:

  • Install a dewatering system and pump the water out. Youll have to wait until the area is completely dry before your pool construction can continue. This method works best with fiberglass pools, as installation is a lot quicker. Just be aware that you may have to pay for extra fill to help prevent cave-ins gravel typically works a lot better than reusing the excavated dirt.
  • Elevate the pool. This is the same as with hitting bedrock. You might have to pay for some extra fill too, depending on the soil quality.

The Actual Time To Build A Pool

However, the overall time it takes to go from first contact with your builder to when your swimming in your pool can be up to 10 weeks or more. This is a realistic estimate based on all the variables and really isnt that long when you consider the change your backyard is going to undertake. However, add to this a busy season when all the good pool builders have full schedules and you can potentially add even more time. Thats why you need to get started now.

We want you to be swimming this spring! So dont wait. Remember that the process to become a pool owner is longer than just the time it takes to build a pool. This is true for all quality pool builders who want to make sure you get the pool of your dreams. So get started today!

How Much Dirt Are You Expecting

Customers always underestimate how much dirt needs to be excavated for a pool.

As a general rule-of-thumb, for the average pool size, picture how dirt much you expect there to be. Now multiply that by 5, or even 10.

Youre looking at about 5 garden sheds worth of dirt.

Arrange for the dirt to be reused as filler if possible, and for your pool builder to remove the excess. Otherwise youre going to end up spending a number of weekends with a wheelbarrow.

How Much Time Would It Take To Dig An Underground Pool

How Long Does It Take To Build A Pool? | California Pools & Landscape

This is a pretty cool video. This guy starts with just a simple tool and digs a giant hole in the ground. From this hole, he makes a small swimming pool and a little underground room. But damnhow long would it take to make this? The video is only 20 minutes long, but surely it must take much longer than that to build the pool-house thingy.

How about an estimate? Let’s estimate how long it would take a mostly normal human to dig this out. This is a great example of the power of estimations. I don’t need to get an exact value . However, if I get a build time of 10 hours that seems like something I could do. A build time of 1,000 hours would take one person months to build. OK, let’s do this and see what we get.

There are couple of parts to this estimation. First there is the volume. What is the volume of dirt that needs to be removed? This isn’t a terribly difficult estimation. I just need the length, width, and height of the hole to calculate the volume. Second is the volume per “scoop.” Notice that the guy digs for a bit and then gathers the debris to throw it out. If I know the volume and the time per scoop, I can find the number of scoops and therefore the total dig time. That’s the plan.

  • Dig time = 10 seconds.
  • Scoop time = 6 seconds.
  • Toss time = 3 seconds.

Like I said, here are my calculations .
