jen088 said:Thanks so much! I have tried the shocking process and it hasn’t worked. I tried bleach, tried the shock packets. Tried everything short of emptying the pool and starting over . Unfortunately, the cheap test I have does not tell you when shock level is reached, only when the appropriate levels are reached and slightly outside of that so I know when to add chemicals. I am assuming expensive tests give a wider range of results. With such a small pool and this being the first summer I am testing out the idea of having a pool, I don’t yet want to invest in an expensive test. Perhaps that will come next year if I decide to keep the pool up. I will clean and refill. I was okay until I left for the weekend and my levels all dropped, so hopefully I can keep it all leveled out this time.

Why Is My Pool Green

Pool water turns green due to an abundance of algae. Algae growth is a common, natural occurrence in standing bodies of water, but you definitely dont want this in your pool. Algae in pool water usually means somethings gone wrong with the chemical balance in your pool.

If the water left in your pool during winter months doesnt freeze, theres a chance algae can grow and develop in the water, despite the cooler temperature. Thats why its so important to shock the pool when you close up at the end of the season. If your pool water chemistry is unbalanced, the water can become a cozy home for algae to thrive in.

Whats more, pool water chemistry can become unbalanced if contaminants get into your pool over the winter, if the temperature of the water rises, and if there arent sufficient winterizing chemicals used during pool closing and throughout the winter.

Keep An Eye On Your Pool

3. Accordion fold the cover, also known as fan-folding. This makes it much easier to put it on the pool next time.

4. Patch any holes that you have now, before putting it away and forgetting about it.

Shock Water & Balance Chemistry

Even though your pool will look clean and clear after a few rounds of vacuuming, there will still be a good amount of microscopic and potentially harmful organic contaminants still floating around from the storm. If left unchecked, this can lead to algae growth, as well as potentially harmful bacteria in your pool. To stop the growth of these contaminants, begin by using a powerful pool shock such as Cal-Hypo or chlorine-free. Add enough shock to raise the chlorine level to around 10.0 ppm.

Once the pool has been shocked and the chlorine level has subsided to around 3.0 ppm, start to balance your water chemistry, beginning with Total Alkalinity. After the Total Alkalinity has been brought to normal levels between 80 and 120 ppm you can easily adjust the pH, chlorine, and calcium hardness of your water. Once it has been balanced, run your filtration system until all the water has been properly sanitized.

Tips For Maintaining Your Pool Going Forward

The easiest way to clean your pool is to maintain it well enough that algae and debris dont get out of hand.

Here are a few simple things you can do to make sure your pool water stays crystal clear:

  • Check filters and pumps frequently. Algae thrives in stagnant water, so ensure that your filter and pump system is cleared of debris and working properly to keep the water moving and organisms skimmed off.
  • Brush and vacuum weekly. Scrub the surface and vacuum the bottom of the pool weekly to keep any dead algae or bacteria from growing.
  • Maintain a healthy PH level. It’s recommended to test your pools PH levels 2-3 times a week along with your liquid chlorine . The recommended level to maintain is between 7.4 and 7.6. This level should stave off any algae spores before they have time to bloom.
  • Use a pool cover. Keeping out debris and other organisms that might blow in will help keep the yuck to a minimum. It will also keep the sun from supercharging any algae spores that are already lingering.

Run A Serious Check On The Filter And Pump

It is essential to clean and prepare the pump before summer. A check on the capacity of all the equipment is also in place. According to guidelines from the manufacturer, run a check on the pumps, hoses, and filters. Before the summer starts, run a check on the filter and pump for any dirt that accumulated over the winter or damage.

Check the O-rings and cartridge elements around the area of the cap, in situations where you have a cartridge filter. Run a replacement if there is a need for one. Run a backwash for the sand filter. Its preferable to make use of new filter sand. In case of small filters, run a replacement, or you can even clean the mesh.

Run a proper inspection of the pump, remove the plugs, and open all the valves. Check for any leaks after the inspection, but this is to be done when you start the pump. Then allow the circulation system to run for a period of 8 to 12 hours.

Turn On The Pump And Filter

Check for any damage to your pump and filter before putting them on. If you find them in good condition, switch them on, and observe their working. Make sure they have no leaks.

You will need to leave the pump and filter running for a few hours to completely clean the debris from the pool. However, if you have used a high-quality pool cover, only a small amount of debris may have deposited in your pool.

Regardless of the condition, it is best to let the pump and filter run for a while before you start using it.

If you have your pool pump & filter situated near gardens or inside garden sheds, make sure to clear a space around both to allow easy access for maintenance and for their longevity.

Run Circulation & Filtration Systems Until Water Is Clear

Running your circulation and filtration systems is the last step to achieving a clean and clear pool after a storm. After vacuuming and brushing your pool, you will want to run your pool equipment until the water is clean. This may take up to several days, but it is important to make sure your system is running the entire time.

Take extra care to check the skimmer basket, the pump strainer basket, and the pressure of the filter while you are running the equipment around the clock. Empty the baskets as soon as they fill up with debris, and backwash your filter if the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI higher than the clean starting pressure. This will help keep your equipment running smoothly and will give you a healthy pool in no time!

For the filter, it should be cleaned, and the tank should be drained following specific instructions for either a sand or cartridge filter. The backwash valve should be left open, and multiport valves should be blown out using a Shop Vac or compressor. Finally, jet fittings should be removed and the pump, filter and any other parts should be stored in a dry place for the winter.
