How To Get Rid Of PINK SLIME And WHITE WATER MOLD In Your POOL | Swim University

The best thing you can do to prevent mold from entering your swimming pool is simply to keep it clean. This means following a regular maintenance schedule.

Run the filtration system regularly, brush regularly, and clean off the surfaces that sanitizers have a hard time with. And of course, keep your pool water balanced at all times, and use the proper amount of sanitizer.

Keep A Pool Clean Without A Filter Pump

Without a filter pump, you could still use some of the water treatment techniques for sanitizing the water, but most inflatable pools that come without a filter pump are small enough to clean with the empty and refill steps above.

To keep the pool cleaner for longer, consider some of these tips. Ive been able to go from cleaning the pool every couple days to once a week with these tips.

Skimmer Net

A skimmer net is one of the cheapest ways to keep debris out of the water. With excessive debris in the water like leaves, pine needles, and dirt, the pool walls will get slimy and grow mildew faster. This Hand Skimmer on Amazon for around 10 bucks will reduce your cleaning schedule.

Oil Sponge

This Scumbag Oil Absorbing Sponge will soak up any oil or residue left in the water from the swimmers. I only add this here because of how amazed I was watching this thing work its magic.

If you put sun tan lotion on your kids, or yourself, and then jump in the pool, all that lotion will get into the water and youll need to clean the water more often because of it. This oil sponge will soak up all those body oils and lotions to keep your water cleaner for longer.

Small Pool Chemicals

Cleaning the pool out once a week is easier for smaller pools than dealing with the chemicals and testing pH levels all the time.

How Do You Determine If Your Water Has White Mold

How to Get Rid of Pink Slime and White Water Mold in a Pool

At first glance, white water mold can be mistaken for flaky, broken-down tissue paper floating on the surface of a body of water. If you touch it and it is slimy or mucus-like, then it is mold.

Often, white mold is accompanied by a slimy pink substance called pink algae. Contrary to its name, pink algae are not a type of algae, but a thin layer of biofilm produced by bacteria living on top of the mold. Once you see pink algae, then you can be sure that your water has white mold.

Sometimes, white water mold can be confused with mildew. However, mildew can almost always be found on plants only while mold can grow on water and porous material such as drywall and wood. Mold is also more destructive than mildew.

White water mold can also be confused for efflorescence. Salty water leaves salt on concrete or brick walls. When the salty water evaporates, a white, powdery substance gets deposited or effloresced onto the surface.

With that in mind, you can determine if the substance is mold or salt by simply looking at where it is attached to. If it is on stone surfaces, its salt. If it floats on the surface of your water, its mold.

You can also test the difference between the two by getting a sample of the white substance and mixing it with water. If the substance does not dissolve, you can safely conclude that it is mold.

As most of us know, wet carpets are very difficult to dry, especially when were talking not just about a small spill, but a large leak or flood. This is when bacteria and mold have the opportunity to thrive. It is important to avoid carpeting your home below ground level or in rooms that are prone to spills, high humidity, and flooding . Luckily, moldy carpets are fairly easy to recognize as they will give off a strong musty odor and cause allergic reactions. Try to clean and dry wet carpets promptly in order to avoid mold spreading to the subfloor. If this happens, you will likely have to remove and replace your entire flooring system.

Why Do I Have White Mold

White water mold is caused by bacteria interacting with body oils, dead skin cells, soaps, lotions, and other things.

More often than not, the mold is able to take up residence in the spas plumbing and filters because of an oversight with water care. Mold builds up in lower circulation areas when you are using your hot tub and then can attach to the spa shell when the pump is off.

Routine water care and hot tub maintenance can help you avoid mold growing in spa. Regularly cleaning and replacing filters, as well as adding sanitizer on a consistent basis, can make it harder for mold to establish itself.

In moist conditions, white mold can grow on wood, upholstered, and leather furniture. Over time, the mold fungus can lower the furnitures value and make it give off an awful, musty smell. However, you should detect the factors stimulating this growth so you can protect your family against dangerous allergens.

What Is The Pink Slime In Your Pool

A substance that can go hand-in-hand with white water mold is pink slime. Its called Serratia marcescens, and its drawn to moist environments, just like white water mold.

People often misunderstand pink slime. It strongly resembles algae, and therefore, many mistake it for pink algae or even leftover residue from hard water. That is not the case, though.

This pink slime is a form of airborne bacteria. It can cause several forms of infection, like a urinary tract infection, if you ingest the bacteria, get it in your eyes, or are exposed to it over long periods.

Fortunately, its easy to spot pink slime. It has a pink or red coloring that makes it highly visible. You may find it in tile crevices, on your shower curtain liners, and in hard-to-reach places. Pool filters are common pink slime hot spots, and the walls of your pool may sport a pink residue from time to time too.

Just like the name implies, while this bacteria typically have an identifiable coloring, it also feels slimy to the touch. While we dont recommend touching it to test it if you have noticed mucky substances in your pool, it could be an indicator of bacteria.

Any damp, wet area is susceptible to bacteria growth. Your pool is, unfortunately, an excellent breeding ground for pink slime.

    Brush Pump & Brush Again

Using the right brush for your pool finish , brush the pool thoroughly. Make sure you get into the spots mold likes to live in around ladders, the pool skimmer, the return jets, and any other dead spots.

Once thats done, run the pump for an entire day. This will give the filter time to catch as much of the mold as possible.

Then, brush it all over again. If you think you got all the mold out on the first go around, you havent encountered mold before.

Is Baking Soda Good For Pools

Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate is naturally alkaline, with a pH of 8. When you add baking soda to your pool water, you will raise both the pH and the alkalinity, improving stability and clarity. Many commercial pool products for raising alkalinity utilize baking soda as their main active ingredient.

How To Deal With White Flakes Or Biofilm In Your Water

White Water Mold Was In My Filter

In the past we have had customers coming to us asking why there are specks of white in the water. They believed that it was paint from the white metal frame. This isnt the case because the outer coating is baked onto the metal during the manufacturing process forming a skin. This type of coating would not come off as flakes and float in the water and is much stronger than conventional paint. If you see white flakes it is actually not paint but may be either calcium scale deposits or biofilm residue in your pool due to bad pool chemistry.

Calcium scale deposits occur when your water has too much calcium. The white flakes may be calcium deposits that have accumulated over time. The calcium hardness in your water should be balanced, if you are experiencing calcium scale deposits it means your calcium level is too high. This can happen sometimes if your water already has a high calcium level or if you super chlorinate the pool using a pool shocker chemical.

To reduce the calcium level of your pool one of the easiest ways is to add fresh water to dilute the calcium. An effective way to do this is to drain about 1/4 of the pool using the release valve and refill it with fresh hose water.

After you have refilled your pool, run your filter pump two to three hours to circulate and mix the water.

What Causes White Water Mold And Pink Slime

White water mold and pink slime are naturally occurring substances found in nature. When the environment is correct, this fungus and bacteria can easily grow and multiply. If you find it in your pool or hot tub, it’s probably because your pool isnt clean and/or the water isnt properly balanced. It can happen from time to time, but no worries. You can get rid of it.

What Is The Difference Between White Mold And Black Mold

Black mold is one of the most well known mold species because its the most harmful of all the molds found in indoor environments. It is typically greenish-black in colour, which makes it easy to distinguish, especially when found growing in areas of high moisture. Black mold is considered highly toxic mold and poses terrible health risks.

On the other hand, white mold is a powdery, stringy, flakey, or filmy substance that can change colour or remain white, making it difficult to identify. Generally speaking, white molds present less health risks than black mold.

How To Get Rid Of White Water Mold

White water mold can be a bit tricky to clean. Its resistance to many pool sanitizers, like chlorine, means your pool will likely require a careful eye and thorough scrubbing.

To be sure youve removed every bit of mold spores or colony growth, there are several steps to follow.

    Double-Check the Pool Pump

One of the biggest causes of mold growth is poorly filtered water. The first thing you should do is check that your pools pump and filter are working correctly.

Until your pump and filter are in good working order, you wont be able to stop and prevent white water mold growth entirely.

Skim the Surface of Your Pool

If you have a water mold infestation in your pool, its probably already visible on the surface.

To get an exact look at your pool, skim the waters surface and try to remove as much of the mold as possible. Throw the debris away and make sure your skimmer is clean.

    Clean the Filter

After checking that your filtration system is still working, its safe to assume that your pool filters have trapped mold and you need to clean your filter.

If you have a sand filter, you may need to backwash the system to clean it properly.

If you have a cartridge filter, one of the simplest ways to clean it is with a hose. You can also use a filter cleaner if its incredibly moldy.

    Balance the Water

    Shock the Pool

To destroy the waters unwanted substances, youll need to fully and thoroughly shock the water. You may need to treat it three or four times over.

    Scrub it
