Additional Pool Cleaning: Youre Not Done Yet
Cleaning the pool is only half the job. After you go to all the trouble to skim, brush, and vacuum your pool, whats the last thing you want? A bunch of leaves, dirt, and other debris to make its way into your water because you neglected to clean the deck and the filter. Dont let all your hard work go to waste.
Use A Winter Pool Cover
A pool cover is a good idea for a ton of reasons, but keeping leaves and debris out of the water is one of the main ones.
A pool cover can be set up with a system to either manually or automatically roll it up when not in useotherwise, they can be time-consuming and heavy to put on the pool every night if you use your pool a lot.
These are also a little harder to clean up before removing if they have accumulated a lot of debris and/or moisture.
If you’re going to use your winter pool cover all year long, I highly recommend using a leaf net with it to make clean-up a little easier.
You will probably also need a pool cover pump to remove dirty water from the cover.
Otherwise, you’ll end up dumping gunk into the pool that will throw off your chemical levelsand that’s exactly what we’re trying to prevent.

Balancing Your Water Chemistry
Step away from the Bunsen burner. Pool chemistry might sound intimidating and complicated, but you dont have to worry. While it is an essential part of effective pool maintenance and water care, basic pool chemistry is surprisingly straightforward.
The most important tool in your bag of water care tricks is your water testing kit. You wouldnt season your stew without tasting it. So before you reach for the chemicals, do some pool water testing. Understanding whats in your water, and what isnt, is the first step to balancing it.
The three most important parts of pool water chemistry are:
- pH levels: The measure of how acidic or basic your pool water is. Low pH levels are acidic, while high levels are basic. The ideal range for your pool is 7.4 to 7.6.
- Alkalinity: Works as a pH buffer and helps avoid huge spikes in basicity or acidity. The ideal range is 100 to 150 parts per million . And you can use baking soda to increase your pools alkalinity level.
- Sanitizer levels: The amount of chlorine, bromine, etc. in your pool water. Proper levels vary depending on which type of sanitizer you choose.
Once you know your pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels, you can start to add chemicals to tweak your water balance. Take your time, follow all the directions, and be sure you know what each chemical does and how itll affect the water, and the folks who swim in it, before you add it.

Just as your kidneys are constantly working to remove impurities from your body, your pools filter is responsible for removing impurities from the water think dirt, leaves, and even small toys. Most of the time, the pool can be cleaned by turning off the filter, removing the filter cap located on the pool deck, lifting out the filter basket, and removing any debris before replacing everything. Its best to clean out your filter basket at least once a week.Once a month youll also want to clean out the pipes utilized by your filter system, which you can do by backwashing. To do so, simply set your filter to backwash, remove the leaf basket and clean it out. Then turn on your pump and let it run until the waste pipe ejects clear water.A final note on turning the filter on and off: Doing so too often can cause the filters mechanics to crack. Set your filter on a timer and allow it to run for at least six hours a day.

Use Pool Lights Sparingly
Your night-time usage of your pool can also inadvertently attract insects. Pool lights seem to summon flying insects from the sky, so the best way to avoid this is to minimise your usage of your pool’s lights. Sure, you shouldn’t have to swim in total darkness, but don’t forget to turn that pool light off when you’re done. If you tend to forget to do this, install a programmable timer switch.

How Often To Clean Pool Waterline Tiles
For the easiest maintenance, the waterline tiles should be cleaned as soon as you notice any discolorationweekly or monthly. Small levels of build-up at the waterline are much easier to clean than waiting until it is heavy. The tiles should always be cleaned at the beginning and end of the pool season.
Frequent Cleaning Of Pool Interior
To avoid having to perform substantial cleaning of the walls and floor of your pool in the future, clean your pool interior with pool surface cleaning brushes and natural cleaning solutions. There are times when a pool may have too much calcium or have a buildup of copper, or even excessive algae at one point or another. All of these scenarios can cause staining to the walls and floor of your pool interior.
The staining usually doesnt happen overnight, and you can avoid staining from starting or continuing by scrubbing and vacuuming the walls and floor of your pool.

How Often To Change Inflatable Pool Water
I have seen it recommended that you change the water in inflatable pools every day or two. To me thats a bit extreme, following the tips above, I can usually go a week before needing to change out the water.
For very small kiddie pools, like the one we have for our 1 year old, changing the water every time he uses it is no big deal to me. I just empty it when hes done playing, and refill it next time were going to use it.
If youre using chemicals or water treatments properly, you wont need to change the water out at all. This is ideal for larger inflatable pools that use a lot of water.
You Need To Keep An Eye On The Water Level
As important as the chemical composition of the water is, the physical water level is just as important. The levels will naturally fluctuate after a heavy rainstorm or an afternoon of kids doing cannonballs. You want to maintain a level that is halfway up the opening of your skimmer. If the water is too low, simply use a garden hose to add the necessary amount of water back in. If the water level is too high, rent a submergible pump from a home improvement store to drain the excess. However, if youre pools liner is a vinyl or fiberglass material that could be easily damaged by the weight of the pump, consider consulting a professional. When youve reached the appropriate water level, remember to recheck the chemicals. The water level fluctuations will have thrown them off balance.
