  • When on the pool deck

Masks are not to be worn in the water, thankfully.

NYC outdoor public pools, which are free, will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for open swims, with a break for pool cleaning between 3 and 4 p.m. Early morning and late night adult lap swim hours are also available at some locations. The city may still host free learn to swim programs but many other aquatic programs are definitely off.

And Finally: Funky Flora Take Over The New York Botanical Garden

The Timess Julia Carmel writes:

Every April, the New York Botanical Garden springs to life with cherry blossoms, magnolias and daffodils. But this year, its also welcoming a new 16-foot tall pumpkin, several polka-dot stainless steel flowers and some towering fiberglass tulips.

These works, which are clustered in 14 different locations around the gardens 250 acres, are part of Yayoi Kusamas new exhibit, KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature. The project, which is opening to the public this Saturday and running through Oct. 31, has been in the works for years.

Im hoping that people will get to see Kusama and her work in a new light, said Tori Lewis, the gardens manager of interpretive content. This is the first exhibition of Kusamas work to focus specifically on her involvement with nature and with plants, which is really integral to her artistic practice since she was a very young child.

Karen Daubmann, the gardens vice president of exhibitions, said many of Ms. Kusamas works were inspired by her upbringing on her familys seed nursery and her bouts with mental illness.

Some of her earliest hallucinations were about pumpkins coming to life and flowers coming to life, Ms. Daubmann said. She definitely sees the natural world in a way that a lot of us dont see it,

You can see the thread of the natural world through all of her works from a very young age, Ms. Daubmann added. Were honored its a perfect fit for us here in the Bronx.

Its Thursday you look stellar.

Its Hollywood turn is far from the only reason to visit. Highbridge boasts not one but two Olympic-sized pools on its premises. While older kids and teens roughhouse in the main, deeper pool, you and your younger kids can splash away in the Olympic-size wading pool, with a maximum depth of 2 feet. I also appreciate the outdoor, co-ed lockers and showers, which means not having to send my too-old-for-the-ladies room son into the men’s room alone. When you’ve had your fill of the water, take a stroll down to the High Bridge and enjoy the breathtaking views.

City Pools Ease Covid

Dozens of city pools are gearing up to reopen this weekend. When they return, swimmers might notice some significant changes over last year.

In 2020, the pandemic forced the city to delay the opening of public pools until Aug. 1, and ultimately that shortened season led to the opening of just 15 public pools citywide.

Beginning Saturday, however, the city will open more than four dozen pools to the public every day through Sept. 12 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

What You Need To Know

  • On Saturday, the city will open more than four dozen pools to the public every day until Sept. 12 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Masks will still be required in changing rooms, but will not be required by the pool area
  • The city’s parks department said by the end of the week, it expects to have 950 certified lifeguards for duty, which will allow the city to operate its beaches and pools at full capacity

Twelve-year-old Osiris Gamble attended a special invitation-only preview on Thursday at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. When NY1 asked how many times she would like to come to the pool this summer, Gamble replied, âEvery day!â

More than a dozen youngsters from the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center and the Davidson Community Center took part in the first splash of the summer at Van Cortlandt Park, joined by NYC Parks Commissioner Mi J. Silver, who jumped into the pool with them.

Speaking of night and day, those who remember the drab way that the pool at Van Cortlandt Park used to look are in for a treat.
