Will Chlorine Kill Lice
Yes, chlorine will kill lice. But why are you asking? After all, lots of things kill head lice.
If youre thinking of taking a prolonged dip in the swimming pool as a way of treating head lice, you should think again. Neither the water nor the chlorine in it will likely be enough to kill them or get them out of your hair. It especially will have no impact on their eggs that are glued to your hair shafts.
If youre thinking of dousing your head with a concentrated chlorine solution, thats a really bad idea. It could burn your skin or eyes. There are much safer ways of treating head lice, including herbal remedies for lice, heated air, and a lice comb.
If you do remove head lice with a lice comb and want to make sure theyre good and dead, I suppose you could dump them into a bowl of chlorine bleach. Even if that doesnt kill them, theyll be dead in 24-48 hours anyway with no human blood to feed on.
I recommend you not use chlorine at all, but rather let a professional treat your head lice.

Treating lice at home without medicated shampoos hasnt been as widely studied. However, there are some methods that could be effective in treating lice at home. Some options include:
Essential oils
Essential oils havent been proven to always kill lice. However, some people have tried applying plant oils like tea tree, anise, or ylang ylang to the hair.
Smothering
Applying compounds to the hair to smother lice is another natural approach. Examples of products that may be used to smother lice include:

Wet combing
Wet combing involves applying conditioner to wet hair and using a very fine-tooth comb known as a nit comb to remove lice and nits from the hair. This should be repeated every three to four days until its been two weeks since youve seen any lice or nits.

You should see your healthcare provider about your rash if:
- You aren’t sure if your rash was caused by chlorine.
- You have severe hives or hives that won’t go away with treatment. Any severe allergic reaction warrants emergency treatment.

What Can I Do To Prevent Getting Lice In A Pool
While it is unlikely that you will get head lice from a pool, its essential to understand that lice are most often passed directly from one persons head to another. Some estimate that this head to head contact accounts for 90% of head lice cases. The other 10% of lice are transferred from one person to another from inanimate objects that come into frequent contact with hair such as hats, hairbrushes, and clothing.

Now that youve found nits in your hair, you shouldnt panic. Head lice dont carry or transmit disease, so they wont infect you with anything while they roam around your scalp. Many people feel shame about contracting the bugs, but they are not necessarily a sign of poor hygiene, says Sokoloff.
Still, head lice are uncomfortable and, for many people, really gross. And constant head scratchingrather than the actual insects themselvescould leave your scalp raw and vulnerable to infection. So while getting head lice is no reason to freak out, its also important to address the infestation as quickly as possible.

How To Identify Thrips In Pool Water
How do you know if youre dealing with thrips in your pool? Look at your plants.
Huh? How will this let you know if theyre in the pool?
Heres the thing. There are a lot of thrip species, and almost all of them eat and live near plants. When theres a ready source of water, like a pool, they also tend to flock toward it, but even if youre looking for them, you might not see them there.
Why? Because theyre ridiculously tiny adults are less than 1/20 of an inch long!
So why look at your plants?
Because if thrips are eating them, youll probably notice both white scarring and black dots. The white is where the thrips have eaten away at your plant, and the black is what theyve excreted after feeding.
Something else thats important to know about thrips is that they dont bite. So what about that pinprick feeling mentioned above?
That happens, but its not so much biting as probing. Basically, theyre checking you out to see if youre a tasty plant. Once they discover that youre not, theyll leave you alone.
This is small comfort if youre probed by dozens of the little guys, though. Moreover, in some cases, their pinpricks have been known to cause itching and even a slight rash. Mostly, theyre just annoying to deal with.

Can Lice Be Killed With Hair Dryer
In a study, blow drying the hair was shown to kill of some of the lice. So yes, blow drying the hair can kill these bugs and even their nits. However, almost half of the bugs still remained, which means they were alive and viable, capable of laying more nits and keeping the infestation going and growing.

Whether we like it or not, we have to share pretty close quarters on buses, planes, or on the subway. It’s possible to make the head to head contact with others, even if it’s unintentional. And even if you don’t make direct contact, there are still the headrests to think about. But the Lice Doctors were quick to point out that the likelihood is low.

Do I Need To Fumigate The House
For some people there is the belief that in order to eliminate head lice you must also treat the house as well as the person. When it comes to head lice there is no need to fumigate the house or throw everything inside the washing machine.8 If you want to sleep better at night without worrying about head lice crawling about your house, you can vacuum areas where an infested person is likely to have sat or lay. 8
Backswimmer Bugs: Beware Of Their Bite
Whats the big deal with backswimmers? Quite simply, they bite. Theres a reason to avoid this bug: the bite feels a lot like a bee sting. Not exactly something you want when you or your family are trying to take a relaxing dip.
As mentioned above, people often confuse backswimmers with water boatmen, so its probably no surprise that they look fairly similar. Like water boatmen, they move around the water with oar-like legs. They have bodies that are elongated and roughly the same size . This insects coloring can also be similarly dull, but they have an additional trick to guard against predators: countershading.
What does that mean? Basically, these bugs blend in and are hard to see. Its not camouflage, though, or the color-changing you probably associate with chameleons. Instead, backswimmers are colored so they blend in with their background, depending on the direction youre looking at them. From above, the dark body blends in with the bottom of the ponds where they typically live. From below, their lighter backs mirror the water and sky.
So how do you recognize backswimmers and differentiate them from water boatmen? The biggest indicator is that they swim on their backs, while water boatmen swim right side up. For the most part, if you have one of these bugs, the other is likely to follow, because backswimmers feed on water boatmen, so you want to get rid of both if you spot one in your pool.

Booklice Are Tiny And Love Mold And Fungi
Booklice are itsy, bitsy little bugsabout 1/16 ” longand they are not actually lice at all and are harmless. But they are still bugs, and they must be dealt with accordingly!
If you’ve got any dried out or decaying plants, you might find these little critters enjoying a plant buffet, or they may even be lurking around your stored food.
For identification purposes, the head and abdomen of a booklouse appear large, and the midsection is more narrow. Huge, compound eyes protrude from the sides of the head. They also have thread-like antennae that sweep back toward the abdomen. Not all booklice have wings, but some do , and when they do, there are four of themtwo smaller front wings and two larger back wings. Most of the ones you will be hunting indoors should be wingless booklice.
If you live in the United States, there is a bit of good news about booklice, in that there are only about a few hundred known species here. The rest of the world has about another 1,000 species. They are tiny, but this article will show you where to look for them and how to eradicate them from your home or business.
Remember this about booklice, if nothing else: They feed only on fungi or mold, so if you find them, it is an indication that you have high humidity that is apparently encouraging mold growth. So, above all, eliminate the moist environmental conditions you may be unknowingly providing for these pests.

Do Chlorinated Pools Affect Lice Eggs
Nope, lice eggs have a thick waxy coating on them, making them pretty much impossible to kill.
Chlorine wont kill them, and you absolutely cant drown them!
In a study, lice eggs submerged in water still hatched 87% of the time.
Even dimethicone treatments are not effective at killing lice eggs.
The fastest, easiest, and most effective way to get rid of lice eggs is with my technique.
Other Rashes From Swimming
There are other rashes you can get from swimming beside chlorine rash. Although many of these are colloquially called swimmer’s rash, they are different types of rashes with different causes.
- Hot tub folliculitis also causes an itchy rash and pus-filled bumps. Unlike chlorine rash, though, the culprit is bacteria like Pseudomonas. Hot tub folliculitis tends to be worse in areas that were covered by your swimsuit. Hot tub rash usually goes away without treatment after a few days.
- Swimmer’s itch, more precisely cercarial dermatitis, is caused by tiny parasites. You’re not likely to get this after swimming in a pool that’s properly maintained, but rather after swimming in rivers, lakes, and ponds.
- Seabather’s eruption is caused by larvae that live in the ocean. You won’t get this from swimming in pools.

The Facts Of Lice Series: Swimming Pools And Head Lice
Weve been in the lice treatment industry for 10 years which means weve seen and heard it all. The overwhelming amount of misinformation out there regarding head lice and home remedies that dont work has naturally and understandably led to confusion and frustration for many parents, educators and childcare workers. To address this, were starting a series to closely examine some of these myths and explain why they are not true. Now that summer is in full swing, we want to take a deep dive into two common myths about Swimming Pools and Head Lice.
Myth: If you swim in a pool with someone who has head lice, it could be transmitted to you.Truth: Head lice do not swim. Nor do they jump or fly. Head lice hold on to the hair tightly and can only be spread through direct head-to-head contact. If you are in a pool, as long as you are keeping a safe distance from others and not making head-to-head contact with somebody else, you should be fine. Swimming or sitting near someone with head lice does not increase the risk of getting lice.
It is important to note however that head lice CAN spread by using other peoples hairbrushes, combs, towels, sunhats, etc. It can also spread if children are playing and head-to-head contact is made, even for a brief amount of time. The Center for Disease Control says:
Myth: You can kill lice by drowning them in the pool.Truth: If only it were that easy. Lice can breathe underwater for several hours when attached to hair.
Preventing And Removing Springtails
Since springtails mostly live in moist soil and vegetation, the best way to keep them out of your pool is to keep your plants well away. Particularly if you have any plants or trees that overhang the pool, do what you can to trim them back or relocate them. It may look more lush and natural to surround your pool with plant life, but youre basically asking for springtails to join you for a swim.
How do you get rid of springtails once theyre in the water? For better or worse, springtails that land in your water will die. This means that getting rid of them basically involves removing the bodies. Your pool filter should do the bulk of this work, as long as you keep it clean. Any bodies that are not filtered out will need to be manually removed by using a pool skimmer.

Will Head Lice Be A Guest At Your Pool Party

During summer, theres a pretty good chance your child will attend a pool party or five. Its a great activity for a party and a nice way to cool off on those blazing hot summer days. The pool is also the prime place to have chicken fights, play Marco Polo, Sharks and Minnows and other classic pool games. Some girls will pretend to be mermaids and fan their hair by the pool steps while the guys might be racing each other to see who is faster. There is one concern for summer time as kids gather to play together and that is head lice. As experts in lice removal, well answer some basic questions for you that may be a concern as you send your kids off to their pool parties.
What Safety Measures Should A Pool Have In Place
The CDC has published guidelines for anyone who operates or manages a public pool. These guidelines include providing supplies to support healthy hygiene and disinfecting shared objects each time they are used. The guidelines also advise creating physical and visual cues to ensure that everybody stays at least six feet apart, both in and out of the water. So if your local pool is open, think less pool party, more laps.

Many states have started to re-open public pools, but with strict rules in place. In The Villages, Florida, where pools opened on May 4, swimmers are asked to come dressed to swim” and bring their own masks, disinfecting wipes, and hand sanitizer. Swimmers must stay six feet away from one another and can stay in the pool for no longer than one hour. There are also capacity limits in place, which vary depending on whether the pool is a sports pool, a family pool, or a neighborhood pool.
Ultimately, public health officials can’t provide definitive guidelines for all activities for all people in all areas of the country, and going to the pool is one of those activities that requires you to do some risk-assessment of your own.
