How To Select An In Ground Pool Liner

How To Replace an Above Ground Pool Liner

The first step in installing an in ground pool liner is to make sure to gather the right measurements. Excessive numbers can cause loose and wrinkled results. Short measurements can cause too much stretching. This can lead to poor durability over a period of time. In ground pools usually have different levels of depths. Consider this when taking measurements.

After that, the next step is to know the thickness of the liner that you will be using. The usual thickness used is 20 mil. Other options are 28 mil on the wall with 20 mil floor thickness and 27 mil thick pool liner. There is also the 30 mil thick liner.

20 mil liners are the cheapest among these choices. Durability is average and usually lasts up to almost a decade. You can use this up to 10 years, provided it goes through proper maintenance. If not, it can last for only around 3-5 years. 27 mil liners are also great options for in ground pools. They offer added durability and improved protection against UV rays. UV rays can damage the liner material and shorten its lifespan.

30 mil is the most durable and offers better protection against sharp objects. However, the thicker the pool liner is, the more difficult it is to install it. The thicker options also cost extra every time you upgrade to a thicker one. After deciding on the thickness, check the design, pattern and color choices. You may choose designs and patterns that match your homes décor.

How To Clean A Vinyl Pool Liner

Cleaning a vinyl pool liner can seem like an overwhelming task. A vinyl liner is especially tough to clean because its all in the details. However, there are steps you can take to make the process much easier and quicker.

Many factors go into cleaning your pool: water temperature, pH level, and the type of dirt or debris in your pool.

  • Remove any debris manually first before using a vacuum cleaner.
  • Its also important to take care when cleaning your pool liner so as not to scratch it. Use a soft brush with no metal bristles to remove the dirt on your pool walls and floor.
  • Vacuum the vinyl pool liner without missing any spots. Make sure you are vacuuming out any leaves or other organic matter that are on your liners interior surface.
  • Test and balance your pool water chemistry to get rid of those pesky stains. Most stains should fade right away after you achieve the proper water chemistry levels.
  • Make sure to shock your pool with chlorine to will kill bacteria immediately so they cant reproduce and cause more problems down the road. Brush away those stubborn stains one last time after shocking them.
  • A stain eraser tool designed for cleaning pool liners can also make a big difference in the appearance of your liner and help it look new.

Mix the baking soda with some hot water to form a thick paste before applying with a sponge to remove all dirt, stains, and mildew on your pool liner.

Vacuum More Than Once A Week

It’s best to vacuum your pool once a week at a minimum, but often, you’ll want to vacuum more than that. Your filter won’t remove all the dirt and debris in your water, especially the particles that fall to the bottom of the pool and stubbornly sit there. Manually vacuuming an above-ground pool can be a challenge, so opt for a stress-free robotic cleaner that gets the job done.

Guide To Cleaning A Pool Liner

If you need to clean your pool liner, there are many ways to do so. Pool owners have a few different options for how they can go about cleaning the liner. First, you should know that there is no right or wrong way to clean a pool and it just depends on what works best for you.

The first option is using an automatic cleaner or robotic vacuum cleaner. This type of vacuum cleaner would work well if you dont want to bend over and scrub the bottom of your pool manually with a brush or netting.

The second option is scrubbing your liners by hand which may be more effective than using an automatic cleaner depending on how dirty the bottom of your pool is as well as what type of pool liner you have.

    So What Do You Recommend

Based on our experience, looking after thousands of customer pools, we realize that there is simply one pool cleaner that we will recommend, with ease of heart, for a vinyl pool: The Hayward PoolVac XL. Simple.

    Here is why:

    • It was designed from the ground up for one pool surface: vinyl pools.
    • It is lightweight, which reduces wear and tear on the liner.
    • The components at the bottom of the cleaner are soft.
    • It has exceptional floor coverage.
    • It will not get stuck. This is very important for above ground pools because most other automatic cleaners do get stuck around the ladder.

Basically, there is nothing else like it in the market for a vinyl liner, especially for above ground pools.

Because of its popularity, Hayward added extra options that allow the cleaner to be used on other surfaces. However, it was simply designed for vinyl surfaces.

The Hayward Ultra XL is some kind of acquired taste. We find that once a customer gets one, they don’t change to any other cleaner ever. It is like there is no way back.

In addition to this, it is a cleaner that operates very quietly, has a great warranty, and because it has such a large customer base all its parts are widely and easily available.

    Weekly Above Ground Pool Maintenance:

    • Skim the surface, vacuum and fully brush the pool, in that order.
    • Test total alkalinity, should be between 80-120 ppm.
    • Clean the pool deck and surrounding areas, helps keep the pool clean.
    • Add maintenance doses of algaecide, clarifier, metal control.
    • Add chlorine tablets to refill the floater or chlorinator.
    • Backwash or clean filter, only if pressure gauge rises 7-9 psi.

To clean your above ground pool, you’ll need pool cleaning tools, like a tele-pole, skim-net or leaf rake, pool brush, and a vacuum hose and vacuum head for vinyl pools. Brushing is important to remove films and dust particles from surfaces, where they can be filtered out of the water.

Pool pH is very alkaline dependent. Your total alkalinity level helps your pH remain stable. If too low, your pH level can fluctuate easily, and if too high, your pH level can be difficult to adjust.

Maintenance doses of algaecide and clarifier are very important for above ground pools, which can quickly turn swampy if chlorine or filtration suffers. Algaecide acts as a backup to such situations, and clarifiers help small filters immensely, to prevent cloudy water and algae blooms.

Add enough chlorine tablets to raise the chlorine level into the 2-4 ppm range, and strive for consistency. Most above ground pools use 2-4 of the 3″ chlorine tablets per week, in a chlorine floater or chlorinator.

What Can I Use To Clean My Pool Liner

A pool liner can be cleaned with either a bleach and water solution or by using baking soda. Maintaining the correct water chemistry is also essential to preventing stains.

Properly cleaning a pool liner requires knowing the cause of the stain. If the stains are green or brown, then they are most likely caused by organic substances, such as algae or other plant matter. Reddish brown colors most likely mean the stain is caused by rust.

Correcting the pools water chemistry may remove organic stains without the need to remove the liner or do vigorous scrubbing. The pH level should be between 7.2 and 7.6, and the chlorine levels should be between 1.5 and 2.5. Calcium hardness levels should be at 200 to 300 parts per million, while alkalinity levels should be at 80 to 100 parts per million. When these levels are off-balance, the pool can be an ideal spot for algae or other organisms to grow. Cleaning the skimmer box and other problem areas with a rag covered in baking soda will not only remove some stains, but increase pH and alkaline levels in the pool.

The Two Main Types Vinyl Pool Liner Stains

Before you begin your liner cleaning, it helps to know what type of stain you are dealing with. Liner stains generally fall into one of two categories. Organic stains are usually a shade of brown or green and are caused by things like dirt, leaves, algae, bugs and other organic matter.

Metal can stain your pool in a variety of colours. Metal stains may be caused by pool ladders, pipes, heaters and even the pool water.

    Measure Twice Buy Once

All you need to determine which size liner your pool requires is a tape measure and something to write down your measurements. Because pool walls can warp and shift, take each measurement twice.

To get the height of any shape above ground pool, measure from the bottom rail to the top. Remove any obstacles from the ground to ensure an accurate measurement.

Check your result by measuring the height on a second section of wall. If the figure is between standard liner heights, round up.

How To Maintain An Above Ground Pool:

    • Run the pool filter everyday, for 12-18 hours daily.
    • Water level should be around mid-skimmer not too high, not too low.
    • Test pH level, should be between 7.4-7.6.
    • Test chlorine level, should be between 2.0-4.0 ppm.
    • Empty skimmer and pump baskets, as needed.
    • Inspect filter pressure and pump operation.
    • Observe pool cleaner operation, if you have one.

On a daily basis, your pool pump needs to operate, for at least 12 hours , to push the water through the filter, and prevent stagnation.

From the moment you open the pool, your pool needs to have a constant chlorine level. A complete test kit like the Taylor K2005, or 7-way test strips is recommended, to do full pool water analysis. Another option is to use the Taylor Troubleshooter test kit for pH, Chlorine and Alkalinity, and AquaChek test strips for your calcium and cyanuric tests.

Chlorine is very pH dependent, and as pH levels rise, the killing power of chlorine is reduced dramatically. Add pH increaser or pH decreaser, as needed, to maintain pH levels in the range of 7.2-7.6.

Using a permanent marker, write your clean, starting filter pressure on the filter tank, or directly on the pressure gauge lens, so you know the clean pressure reading. Then you will also know when to backwash, or clean the filter when pressure rises 7-9 psi above clean.
