The essential difference is that a wood fired hot tub heater cannot keep your hot tub’s water at an exact temperature, as the other heating options can. Moreover, the heat will tend to stratify, meaning the hotter water will rise to the top, while the cooler water will sink to the bottom. How To Use Your Wood Burning Hot Tub In The Winter

Not all wood burning hot tubs are made equal, and some designs will function better and endure harsh winters better than others. Cedar tubs which are unlined will take a bigger beating than those that are lined with aluminum, stainless steel, fiberglass, or plastic, and are less effective at powering your tub to 102-04 degree hot tubing temperature than those which are designed to be more heat efficient. AlumiTubs can be enjoyed year round in any temperature. We’ve had customers use their tubs in -50 degrees and even colder conditions while maintaining hot tubbing temperature. If there’s risk of the water freezing and you won’t be using your tub, it’s important that you drain, wipe dry, remove the chimney and cover the firebox and all other components of the tub. Never let ice form in or around your AlumiTub. Customers with the Standard tub can use a trough heater / water de-icer to prevent ice from forming. Note that this requires electricity and won’t work if there’s power loss. If the tub will be in regular use, keep the water hot by maintaining the fire in the firebox to keep it from reaching freezing temperature.

For those in extreme winter temperatures, laying down a base of insulation will maximize heat retention. Use the rigid insulation provided with your AlumiTub by placing it on top of the water, beneath the lid when not in use. Saltwater Vs Fresh Water In Hot Tubs

When it comes to choosing saltwater or freshwater for your wood fired hot tub, its really a matter of personal preference. Saltwater is inherently more gentle on sensitive skin and naturally relieves inflammation, so it has therapeutic benefits that go beyond just soaking. Instead of adding the typical amount of chlorine to the water, you can purchase a sanitizing saltwater system that enhances the saltwaters natural ability to create chlorine and purify the water.

On the other hand, freshwater hot tubs that require you to add chlorine may be a little harsher on the skin and eyes, but it will kill off more viruses and bacteria that build up overtime. Alternatively, you can forgo chlorine altogether, which means youll have to drain the water after 2-3 uses, wipe down the inside of the tub with a mild water/bleach solution, and refill it again for next time. Overall, thats a lot of wasted water and not a very sustainable option.
