Therefore, the minimum size heater that is recommended for a 15 x 30 pool is 150,000 BTUs. Keep in mind, this is simply the recommended minimum size. Meaning, I wouldnt go lower but I might need to go a little higher. When it comes to gas heaters, you always want to oversize the unit.

Subsequently, question is, how much does it cost to run a pool heater per month? For a typical size 400,000 BTU pool heater, thats 4 therms per hour. Currently, natural gas runs about $1.50 per therm near Tampa. The average cost to heat a pool for one hour on natural gas is around $ 7.00. To heat, an average pool with no solar cover typically takes 8-14 hours.

Also question is, how do you size a natural gas pool heater?

For an average 15 x 30 pool , a 300K BTU heater would raise your pool temperature 2 degrees per hour a 400K BTU heater, 2.7 degrees per hour. For a 20 x 30 poolthe temperature rise for 300K and 400K heaters would be 1.5 and 2 degrees respectively.

Use A Solar Heater & Pool Heat Pump Together To Maximize Savings

Of course, theres one method that cant be beaten when it comes to cost-effectiveness and performance. And thats because it involves using two of the most energy-efficient heating solutions available: pool heat pumps and solar pool heaters.

In this scenario, a pool owner uses the pool heat pump to achieve desired temperatures when needed, mainly using the solar heater to sustain the temperature. But whats great about this combination is that it greatly reduces how often you need to run your heat pump.

Working together, the two heating systems can easily keep the pool warm around the clock. While the pool heat pump covers the cloudy days and nights, the solar heater steps in on sunnier days to maintain the pool heat pumps hard work.

Why Is Pool Heater Sizing Important

Weve all heard the saying bigger is better. When it comes to gas pool heaters, this is mostly true. However, it really depends on your pool size, and budget.

Generally speaking, the amount of BTUs required to heat pool water will be the same, no matter the size of the heater. But a larger one will work quicker than a smaller heater, especially if you have a large body of water youre warming.

Note: BTU is a unit of measurement that measures thermal energy. Gas pool heaters are rated for BTU input/output and range from 100,000 400,000 BTUs.

Current pool heaters are 85% to 90% efficient. This means if you have a heater with an input of 400,000 BTUs, youll be getting 340,000 BTUs of output based on 85% efficiency, though this drops over time due to normal wear and tear. Understanding BTUs helps you determine the necessary heater size for the volume of water in your pool.

A smaller heater means youll have to run it longer, which means youll be paying more in operational costs. But once it reaches the desired temperature, it can easily maintain it.

When it comes to minimum size, the general rule is 1 BTU will raise 1lb. of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit. You can then determine the minimum BTU size of the heater you require when heating your pool by X amount of degrees.

Run The Water Connection

If you’re using a gas or electric-powered heater, you’ll need to connect it to the pool’s waterline. This will allow the water to go into the heater and then flow back into the swimming pool. You may need to install an extra piece such as an elbow joint or extension in some cases.

The connection will go from the heater’s pump to the pool, and another connection will be needed for the heater input. In total, you’ll need two lines total: one for the water coming into the pump and another one for the heated water exiting the heater. The pipes will likely need to be glued together using PVC cement or appropriate pipe glue.

Use An Electric Heater

An electric pool heater utilizes your pools circulation to warm the water as it cycles through. Much like a kettle, it has a heating element that transfers heat as water flows over it.

This type of heater plugs straight into your mains and connects up to your Intex filter pump, as it requires a pump in order to continuously push the flow of water through the heater.

Note: If choosing this option, we strongly recommend getting an Intex branded electric pump to ensure its compatible with your Intex filtration system.

Pros:

  • Can provide a significant temperature increase
  • Easy to set up and install into your Intex plumbing
  • Efficient at maintaining temperatures once heated

Cons

  • High electrical running costs at $5-$10 per day
  • Can take 2-4 days to reach peak temperature
  • Only suitable for small volumes of water

    What Do We Recommend

    Fafco (2) 2

If youre just looking for a noticeable bump in water temperature over a few days, an Intex electrical resistance heater is a fairly low upfront investment and moderate use wont run electricity costs too high.

On the other hand, if you want to heat your Intex pool for the season or even all year-round, a gas heater is likely the best value in terms of upfront cost, running cost, and overall effectiveness.

Finally, a solar pool cover should be paired with whatever method you choose, not only to add a few more degrees to the water temperature but to retain that extra heat when the pool isnt in use.

Factors That Affect Pool Heating Time

Whether youre heating your pool by the sun or with a heater or a heat pump, several factors can influence the speed at which your pool gets heated up.

    • Air Temperature. The weather plays a significant role in determining the ambient temperature of your pool. If youre in a colder region, you can expect the air to be chilly or cold. A heat pump may take longer to heat a pool in a colder climate than a warmer one. Heat pumps use surrounding warm air to heat the pool, so theyre the best for areas with 50 °F and above temperatures.
    • Starting Water Temperature. If the current and desired water temperature gap is significant, you can expect a longer pool heating time. The lower the starting temperature, the longer it will take to heat the pool.
    • Swimming Pool or Spa Size. The size of a pool affects how long it takes to heat the water. So, it would be best to go for an efficient heater or heat pump with a higher BTU depending on your pool size. For example, small heat pumps can work best for small pools or spas, but they can take forever to warm a large pool, even by one degree.
    • Use of a Solar Cover. A solar cover can reduce heating pool time by reducing heat loss, primarily through evaporation. So, if you want to retain heat in your pool overnight, invest in a good solar cover.

What Is The Best Place To Place Your Patio Heater

The best place to place your patio heater depends on how you want to use it. For example, if you want to use it for heating different areas of the patio, youll need to place it in various places. If youre using a small patio heater, youll need to place it close to the center of the patio space. This will ensure that everyone is warmed up equally.

If youre using a medium-sized patio heater, youll need to place it at the center or edges of the patio space. This will warm up the entire space equally. If youre using a large patio heater, you can place it in various places to heat different areas of the patio.

How To Size A Pool Heater

Whenever I talk to another pool professional about calculating heater size, I usually see their eyes glaze over. Not that sizing a pool heater is super difficult, but if you want to do it right, you need to do some calculations first.

Similar to pumps, sizing heaters isnt usually calculated. Its usually a matter of picking a model youve used in similar applications. For example, if youre working on a pool with an attached hot tub, most installers would suggest a 400,000-Btu heater, which is the largest available in most residential applications.

In that case, a pro might not feel he or she needs to run the calculations because they know the attached hot tub, circulated at pool temperature, will need to be heated before use. And the higher the Btu output of the heater, the faster the heater will raise the water from pool temperature to spa temperature.

Nobody wants to turn on their spa two hours in advance just for it to warm up. With a giant 400,000-Btu heater, an average 8-by-8-foot spa could go from 80 degrees up to 104 degrees in about an hour.

Similarly, when a homeowner asks what size heater they should use, most installers just pick their favorite heater that is between 200,000 and 350,000 Btu, knowing from experience that it will work on a pool approximately the size of the one in question.

    Sizing Your Pool Heater

Installing a Raypak gas heater on Intex above ground pool the easy way

When I first started working in the pool industry, one of the areas I always tried to avoid was helping customers size their pool heaters. Im not sure what made me uncomfortable about sizing heaters but I avoided it like the plague. One thing I did know was that when it came down to heaters and heat pumps, the bigger the better. Although true, I learned that some pool owners actually prefer efficiency over size. Eventually, I realized that my bigger is better line wasnt always the best advice for every pool set up and sooner, rather than later, Id have to learn how to size a heater for a pool owner.

So, exactly how do you size a heater for your pool? Lets do this together.

Liquid solar covers are easier to use than a solar blanket youre just adding liquid to your pool instead of reeling in a blanket. But solar blankets are about 25 percent more effective at keeping heat and water in the pool.

Whether you use a liquid or a blanket solar cover, they help retain heat and stop evaporation, especially at night. and how they work.

Now lets talk about some next-level solar heating options. If you have an above ground pool, you may want to consider heating the water with a Solar Dome.

How Can You Heat An Above Ground Pool

An above-ground pool is a temporarily erected structure above the ground surface. It gives you room for more flexibility as you can take an above ground pool with you if youre relocating, unlike the inground pool which is permanent. This makes it less attractive to invest in a permanently positioned pool heater.

Heating an above-ground pool can make your experience more pleasant as you just chill in the warmth of the water while listening to the latest hip-hop music. That feeling would be bliss.

Interestingly, there a lot of ways in which you can heat your pool. Among them are: using a heat pump, using solar covers, liquid treatments, solar rings, using a pool water heater etc.

A heat source is needed for the heating of an above-ground pool. Sources of heat like pool heaters need the energy to function. This includes propane, natural gas, solar panels. Some heat sources such as solar covers and solar rings do not need outside energy source and they are cheaper.
