Pool liners dont come with an expiration date, so its possible that you can extend the life of your liner by taking good care of it.
Having said that, we can tell you from experience that most people will see a need to replace their pool liner around the 5-9 year mark.
How will you know when its time to replace your liner? Here are the most common symptoms of a liner thats ready to retire:
- Pool is leaking
- Liner is dry and brittle
- Needs constant patchwork or repairs
- Has a hole or tear larger than six inches

A gunite pool costs between $29,000 and $60,000 with most paying around $50,960 on average for a 14 by 28 pool. The long-term 10-year cost of ownership to maintain a concrete pool averages $27,500 which is the highest of any pool material.

A Pool Builder Told Me I Should Get Rid Of My Liner And Fibreglass It Instead Is This Possible
Sure its possible on some pool builds, but a definate no on others. If its a tiled, fibreglass, rendered or pebble pool that has been converted over to vinyl, you should be able to fibreglass it, but if it was converted over because of ground movement, that issue will still be present, so you are unlikely to get good result with any finish other than vinyl. Only Aqualux remains flexible, able to accommodate pool structure movement while remaining watertight.
If your pool shell is a prefabricated panel walled pool , then no, it is not suitable for any surface finish other than vinyl. These pools have been engineered for a flexible finish, and renovating them using a hard finish such as pebble or fibreglass is incredibly high risk, with very little reward. If there is any ground movement at all, the pools inevitably crack and leak, and the owners end up having to pay to have them converted back to a flexible finish like vinyl again within 2-5 years.
Important Measurement Terms To Know
FINISHED DEPTH: The finished depth refers to the actual finished depth of your pool. Unless you have a flat bottom pool you will have a finished deep end and shallow end pool depth. BREAK LINE: The break line refers to any place on the swimming pool floor where the angle changes.
POOL COPING: Your pool coping is typically the finished edge of your deck and is made of powder coated aluminum. Your pool coping also has the liner track built into it, the liner track holds the liner bead in place. The coping sits on top of your pool wall panels, if the finished edge of your deck is exposed concrete or stone pavers then you probably have cantilever coping. COPING TRACK/BEAD RECEIVER: The swimming pool liner coping track or bead receiver is a small opening that runs all around the pool right underneath the coping, the liner bead snaps into the coping track. ALL SWIMMING POOL FINAL DEPTH MEASUREMENTS ARE TAKEN FROM YOUR BEAD RECEIVER/COPING TRACK.

How Much Does A 16′ By 32′ Inground Pool Cost
A vinyl liner pool that’s 16 feet wide and 32 feet long typically costs more than $45,000, just for basic packages. It may be possible — but it’s probably unlikely — that you’ll be able to find lower prices. Vinyl liner pools are often the most affordable inground pools to install, but all pool types have become more costly in 2021.
Please keep in mind that the upfront cost of a vinyl liner pool installation might be more affordable than other pool types, but the lifetime costs are another story. You can expect to spend nearly $12,000 to maintain a vinyl liner pool every ten years.
Fiberglass swimming pools with dimensions of roughly 16′ x 32′ will likely cost over $55,000 for the most basic packages. You will, of course, need to pay more for any upgrades, optional add-ons, and other additional features.

Typically, whoever does the wall assembly will also do the plumbing, pour the concrete footer, backfill the pool, lay the pool bottom, and install the liner. Your main costs here would be associated with the materials needed for these steps and labor if you hire a builder to complete. Below is the approximate cost of the materials without labor.

How Long Will It Take To Replace My Pool Liner
Once you’ve selected your Aqualux installation specialist, and chosen the colour you want, your liner replacement is likely to be completed within a couple of weeks, depending on how busy the installer is, and the scope of work required. The membrane itself will take between 5 and 7 days to manufacture, and a fairly standard time line would go something like this:
Day 1: Drain the pool and measure it up and order the Aqualux finish.
Day 2 – 4: Prepare the pool shell – repair any surface cracks, make any structural changes and replace fixing strips if needed. It’s also a good time to change any lights over to the newer LED styles.
As soon as the new pool interior arrives , so yours will be a bit quicker than it will be for one that has to be freighted to New Zealand or Paris .
Once the membrane is on site, the installation itself is generally completed within the day, sometimes stretching out to two days depending on how long it takes to re-fill the pool.
