When the pH level of a pool is rather high or low, pool owners stabilize the pH level of the pool by increasing or decreasing the alkalinity level. There are equilibrium shifts for CYA, borate, carbonate, ionic strength, calcium hardness and temperature plus the starting pH and alkalinity.
You probably already know that the percentage of HOCl and OCl_ are determined by the pH. At pH 7.5 there is about 50% HOCl and 50% OCl_. Raise the pH to 8.0 and the percentages are 22% HOCl and 78% OCl_. When HOCl converts to OCl_ a hydrogen ion is released according to this reaction:
HOCI OCI + H+ Hypochlorous acid is in equilibrium with hypochlorite ion and hydrogen ion
The H+ is either liberated or used depending on the pH of the water. When it is liberated, it is then counted as part of the total hydrogen ions in the water which we call pH. The more H+, the lower the pH and the less H+, the higher the pH. This is just one example of a hydrogen ion source in the water.
Another example is carbonate to bicarbonate:
HCO3 CO32 + H+ Bicarbonate ion is in equilibrium with carbonate ion and hydrogen ion
Calculating the amount of hydrogen ion released or used is quite complex and there are about 30 different equilibrium reactions to consider with each requiring a separate calculation.

What Causes Low Alkalinity
Your pool water can become low in alkalinity for a number of reasons. A drop in alkalinity is something that most pool owners will experience. It can be a fairly easy fix, but it is important to figure out the cause to prevent low alkalinity in the future.
Muriatic acid or other dry acids are definitely effective for cleaning your pool. But they significantly impact the waters pH levels, which need to be accounted for when treating the swimming pool. Overuse of these acids can cause the water to become unbalanced.
Another common reason your waters alkalinity will drop is heavy rain. Rainstorms can alter the swimming pools pH level because the additional water dilutes chemicals in the water or because the rain itself is slightly acidic.
What Is Ph And What Should It Be
pH simply means the waters total acid-alkalinity balance.
Pool experts suggest that the ideal pH reading of pool or spa water needs to be between 7.2 7.8.
If the balance is off, problems can and probably will occur in your pool or spa.
Any element added to the water, be it sweat, sunscreen or leaves or bugs will cause the pH to change.
If the water becomes too alkaline , the water can become cloudy or it can cause scaling on the plumbing equipment and on the pool lining something that can be costly to fix.
If the water is too acidic , it can cause etching or corrode the metallic equipment. In the worst-case scenario, highly-acidic water can give you and your guests skin rashes or irritations.
For these reasons, its important to monitor pH levels closely.
Its also important to note that the water will need to be tested more frequently during periods of high usage due to an increase in by-products from swimmers or simply from dirt that gets tracked into the pool.

How Much Baking Soda Do I Add To My Pool
As a rule of thumb, use 1.5 pounds of baking soda per 10,000 gallons of pool water. This should raise the alkalinity by about 10ppm . Or you can use the chart below.

Once you know your pools volume, and youve measured out the baking soda, dont add it all at once! If you adjust the alkalinity too much in either direction, it can affect the pH as well.
Note: It doesnt matter which type of baking soda you use. The most popular brand is Arm & Hammer, which is a good choice. Any grocery store brand will do as long as the main and only ingredient is Sodium Bicarbonate.

Add Some Sodium Carbonate
Sodium carbonate, also known as soda ash, is highly alkaline and dissolves efficiently in water. The other benefit of soda ash is that it leaves almost no trace in the water.
If you add strongly alkaline matter to your pool water, this will raise the pH level, while at the same time reducing the acidity in your pool water.
What counts here is using a light touch. The last thing you want is to go over the top and veer from low pH water to high pH water.
- Calculate how much soda ash you need making sure not to exceed 2 pounds for each 10,000 gallons of water
- Check that your pool pump is working. Youll need this to circulate the water
- Broadcast the soda ash evenly across the surface of the pool water
- Wait for at least 1 hour. Once the water has recirculated, test the pH levels again
Understanding Ph Levels And Total Alkalinity In Your Pool
You can either have acidic water or basic pool water. The level of how acidic your pool water is is determined by the pH scale.
The lower the pH level, the more acidic your water will be. Acidic water can cause long-term damage to all your equipment and pool surfaces by eating away at it over time.

For example, every time it rains or when someone jumps in the pool, that can affect your pH. It can cause it to go up or down dramatically. But alkalinity will take the brunt of the hit before your pH does. And thats why its important to use the right amount of baking soda to keep both your pH and alkalinity levels correct.
