Is April Too Early To Open Pool

There are no set rules for pool opening, and the exact time highly depends on your region of the country. Mid-March is fine after a milder winter, while April is better after a colder season. If you happen to open a little too early, leave the pump running and reinstall your pool cover until the weather warms up again.

Melting Ice And Consistently Warm Weather

You must make sure all the ice on top of and below the cover has melted before your pool is opened. Opening a pool that still has ice floating in it can potentially cause damage to the pool. If there has been warm weather during both the day and the night for some time, it should be safe to open your pool.

Opening your pool early means that you must begin maintaining it, and if you dont heat it, only the ones brave enough to jump in, will get any use out of it.

But dont wait too long after the warm weather hits to get your pool open because

Ask The Expert: When Is It Time To Close My Pool

There are different factors that dictate when you should close your pool, ranging from water temperature to the amount of foliage that may get into your pool.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Did you know closing your pool too early can be a bad thing? There are different factors that dictate when you should close your pool, ranging from water temperature to the amount of foliage that may get into your pool. Many say the standard is to open your pool early and close your pool late. While that is said to be the standard, it actually holds a lot of merit.

If you opt to close your pool while the weather is warm, you may be asking too much of your chemicals. Closing your pool for the season should not be based on when it is convenient like a holiday weekend – rather it should guided by the proper timing. If you close your pool while the weather is still warm, the winter protection chemicals youve added will often not last until spring. That is because your pool chemicals are consumed much faster in hotter temperatures versus cooler temperatures.

When closing your pool earlier than the outdoor temperatures warrant, your pool is more susceptible to algae growth and staining during the early parts of spring. Not to mention it can also lengthen your spring opening and clean-up time due to severely unsanitary pool water.

Algae Growthdont Wait Until Memorial Weekend

The sooner you open, the more likely you are to find a cleaner pool when that cover comes off. If you are using a mesh winter cover, sunlight is getting through, and your pool can become a breeding ground for various types of algae.

When opening your pool in the early months of March and April means less chance of algae growth. This, of course, will depend if you winterized your pool properly.

Keeping the pool clean and algae-free means catching it before it goes into full bloom.

Grant it, algae grows no matter what, but change in temperatures, especially in warmer temps, create a perfect environment for algae growth.

Check Your Water Temperature

Depending on what part of the country you live in, these rules will vary slightly. I however recommend a good 1 to 2 months before the opening of swimming season you begin to test the temperature of water.

Algae can begin to grow when the average water temperature in a swimming pool is in excess of 65 degrees.

I like to open my swimming pool once the water temperature exceeds 65 degrees. Now by no means am I going to go swimming at this water temperature, the water would even be quite dangerous for people to swim in at least until the water warms up about another 12 degrees.

Why Get My Pool Opening Service So Early

With the low cost to operate pool equipment these days, opening your pool early will allow you to do a couple of things.

  • Get you pool clean. Dont wait till the week before Memorial Day party to have your pool opening service. If it is green or dirty you will be hard pressed to get it perfect before the party.
  • The longer you keep your pool closed and allow the water to warm up, you are inviting algae to grow.
  • Steal a couple of swimming days. You dont have to turn your heater on, let the sun naturally heat your pool for you. If it chemically balanced let mother nature do some heating for you.
  • If a nice day is on the horizon, turn the heater on to give the pool temp a little boost and get a swimming day in while your neighbors watch you having fun.
  • Avoid the Rush. Get your pool opening service done before your pool contractor gets busy or have the techs being rushed getting to the next job.
  • Equipment Check. When you get your pool opened for the year you can see if anything needs replacing and still have time to do so prior to the swim season starting.
  • Get rid of Winter Depression. Nothing looks more depressing than closing your pool in the fall and putting your cover on. Get that cover off and look at your beautiful backyard.

Is It Too Early To Open Your Swimming Pool

As temperatures begin to finally rise in March, many pool owners will be getting eager to open up their pool for the summer season. But is it too early?

The short answer is: Yes youll want to wait a bit longer.

But that doesnt mean you cant start prepping now, so that you have everything ready once its time.

So, when is the best time to open your swimming pool?

Generally speaking, in our region, you should wait until daytime temperatures are consistently at a minimum of 70 degrees. Here in Central PA, its not unusual to experience freezing temperatures and snow in March. So, its generally best to wait until after the spring season begins.

    Should I wait until summer?

No, not necessarily. Again, generally speaking, its better to open your pool sooner. As temperatures begin to rise, algae is more likely to form. The longer you let the algae grow in late spring and early summer, the more work your pool opening may require.

What can I do now to get ready?

This is where you can get a jump on your pool opening, and save yourself some time, before its actually time to open it.

Start by making sure you have all the necessary tools and supplies ideally in a location where youll be able to easily retrieve them on the day of your pool opening. Have a hose for siphoning and/or a pool-cover water pump ready, which youll use to remove any water from the top of your pool cover.

If youre not sure what supplies youll need to open your pool, just give us a call.

Navigating The Transition From Winter To Spring

That time of year is coming when the weather begins to warm up and the flowers begin to bloom. With spring fever comes the urge to swim. Remember that it is never too early to prepare for the spring. Many pool owners find it difficult to navigate the transition from winter to spring. One conundrum is when they should open their pools. When is too early? Too late? The answer to these questions depends on the region but there are general signals that will supply the answers to their questions.

Swimming Pool New Season | When Should You Uncover Your Pool?

Grab a garden hose and fill the pool until the water level reaches the midpoint of the waterline tile or middle of the skimmer weirs. Once youve got the water level where it needs to be, you can now clean leaves, twigs and debris from the pools bottom by using a wall and floor brush. This is also time to dust off your algae brush and pool vacuum. Also be sure to remove any debris from the leaf basket.

    How Much Use Itll Get

When you open your pool, you can expect about three or four weeks to get the chemicals and cleanliness perfect before youre ready to swim.

If you decide to open your pool in the middle of summer, you might miss out on all of the prime swimming days.

If you enjoy lounging by the pool or swimming laps, youll need to carefully consider when to open your pool. That begs the question what month should you open your pool?

The Perfect Time To Open Your Pool

Knowing when to open your pool can be difficult because the weather in the UK somewhat dictates us a little. It hasnt been uncommon in the past years for it to still feel like mid-winter in April!

The key is to opening your pool is not to leave it too late when the average temperatures are around 15c and above. Any higher and your will start having a problem with bacteria and algae growth in your pool. Left for a longer period of time this will become a very expensive task to get your pool back to a healthy state. In short, the earlier you can open your pool the better but be careful of opening too early when you are still seeing freezes overnight. It may seem counter-intuitive opening your pool when you dont plan on using it for another month or so but it will pay dividends when you do eventually want to jump in!

This all said, the decision on when to open your pool is up to you. We advise you to watch the temperature outside and open the pool as soon as you can especially if you are not opening the pool yourself and employing a company to open your pool as this tends to be a very busy period in the year.

The winter weather in New Jersey has fluctuated quite a bit this year, with Mother Nature providing us with a blast of cold weather as recently as a few weeks ago. As things finally start to thaw out, many peoples thoughts have already turned to summer. If you own a pool, you may be wondering when you should re-open it there is always debate about the best time of year to do so. Take the following factors into consideration.

    Pollen

In New Jersey, tree pollen typically peaks in April and May. It is important to open your pool before pollen becomes a major issue, because it can have a negative impact on still water. Essentially, the pollen congregates in the water without a way to get out. Pool owners that try to open after pollen has peaked typically have a lot of problems. However, for pools that are already open, pollen isnt much of a concern. The pollen is pulled into the skimmer, and the filter keeps it from returning to the water. The water circulation also makes it hard for that nasty yellow stuff to pollute the water.

    Temperature

When the temperature starts to hover around seventy degrees, it is time to get the pool open. If you dont go ahead and treat your water, bacteria and algae will start to take over the pool. Keep in mind that you really have to track the weather during this time. If it is still freezing at night, you dont want to open the pool just yet, even if daytime temperatures are hovering around your target number.

Opening Up Your Pool: How Soon Is Too Soon

Snowstorms and below freezing temperatures have all of us dreaming of the first dip in the pool. But when is the right time to take off the cover and dive in? How soon is too soon?

    Earlier is Better

When it comes to opening your pool, sooner is better than later. There are no set rules for pool opening, and the exact time highly depends on your region of the country. Mid-March is fine after a milder winter, while April is better after a colder season.

But any Midwesterner knows that trying to predict the weather in the heartland is futile. In simplest terms, look for consistency. You want to be sure that your area is free of frost. If you happen to open a little too early, leave the pump running and reinstall your pool cover until the weather warms up again.

    Save TimeAnd Money

The benefits of opening your pool earlier rather than later are nearly infinite. An early opening can save you effort, time, and most importantly, money!

A swampy pool will require more work, not to mention chemical purchases, than one that was opened in cooler weather. Aside from an easier cleanup, an earlier pool opening will allow more time to inspect for faulty parts that may need replacing, or to add any fun new accessories.
