Sodium Hypochlorite is commonly called liquid chlorine or bleach. Most household bleach that you will find in stores is 6% chlorine. Pool chlorinating liquids may be 10% or 12.5% chlorine.

If you buy household bleach, you want pure liquid chlorine with no additives. Additives such as fragrances, thickeners , or surfactants may cause foaming. Bleach with fabric protectors may also cause foaming.

Most Clorox bleach today says it has Cloromax Technology. They are polymers that create foaming and are not suitable for pools. Clorox Germicidal Bleach did not have additives but the December 2019 label on their website now shows Cloromax Technology. So look carefully at the label and ingredients on any Clorox bleach products you intend to use in your pool.

Most retail bleach is manufactured by a few chemical suppliers. KIK corp is probably the biggest. They all use the ChloroMax technology that Clorox patented and then licensed out. So even the store brands like Target or Walmart will say their bleach is regular unscented, etc and somewhere on the bottle will be the phrase Fabric Protection Technology . Read bleach labels carefully and look for code words that may imply it has additives other then chlorine.

Bay to Bay Hardware has been a fixture for fixtures, nuts, bolts and whatnot for South Tampa homeowners and repair people since 1947. So when Lisa Jacobson put up a liquidation’ sale sign May 1 after nearly 50 years as a family business, worried customers flooded her with questions.

Jacobson said the store isnt going anywhere. She is leasing it to an Ace Hardware franchisee. She will continue to run the separate Bay to Bay Pool Service, Inc.

She bought the store in 2013 from her father, Eric Jacobson, who had run it since 1972, at first with his brother Allan, who left the business early on. The patriarch died in 2015.

Lisa Jacobson, 44, talked with the Tampa Bay Times about the store she grew up in.

How are steady customers reacting?

Over the weekend, when I put the sign up, oh, word spread, and it was just a free-for-all on my phone: Whats going on? What are you doing? Oh, my God, you had a good run, what happened? Are they still going to have glass? Whats going on with this? Are we still going to have pool service?’

I mean, it was all weekend long. I was like, Were still going to be here. I put Renovation/Liquidation . Were going to renovate. Were coming back, just as Bay-to-Bay Ace Hardware.’

Customers dont like changes, you say, as you found out after you bought the store.

And I said, No! Its still the same owner. Im just the daughter. I dont want to work in filth.
