How To Keep Kiddie Pool Water Clean Use Chlorine
You may be surprised to know that you can use chlorine for kiddie pools! In small quantities of course, chlorine tablets are great to fight bacteria and algae in your baby pool.
Chlorine is a natural chemical element. It is one of the most potent elements we have to destroy and deactivate infections, viruses, and other illness-causing bacteria, according to the American Chemistry Council. Weve been using it for over 150 years, and its one of the only things that can be used to fight things like E. Coli and Salmonella.
You can use small chlorine tabs that are meant for a spa tub or small pools. They are 1 in size and you can use these chlorine tablets for kiddie pools. These should only be used in pools that hold 100 or more gallons of water.
You should use one tablet per week for a kiddie pool of 200 gallons or less, and two tablets weekly for kiddie pools of over 200 gallons.
An additional benefit of using chlorine in the kiddie pool is to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs in the pool.
The correct way to use these chlorine tabs in your kiddie pool is to use a chlorine float dispenser. The dispenser below will hold one or two tablets and you simply let it float in the pool when the kids are not using it. Do NOT just throw the tablets directly into the pool.

How To Keep A Kid Pool Clean Naturallywithout Chemicalsclick Here To Repin
Do you have a kiddie pool for your kids to cool off this summer with? Dont you hate how fast they turn green? I am going to show you a tip on how to keep a kid pool clean naturally without chemicals.
While this tip will work with small kids pools such as the one in the pictures it may not work well for large pools. That is mainly because of the amount of water in the larger pools.
I got a pool for the kids to stay cool with. I mean we see a lot of days in the mid 90s and they need a way they can play outside and cool off.
But after about two-three days in 90+ degree heat and the sun, it will turn super green like the picture below.
And no, we did not allow them to swim in the green pool.
We first started by emptying it out every few days and taking a sponge and vinegar and washing it down before filling it up again. We did use the water for the plants and other things so it would not be wasted, but it was still such a pain to do EVERY few days.
However, I did not want to add chemicals such as chlorine to the pool. So that is when I got to thinking, how would it be if I just put vinegar in the water??
I was very happy with the results after giving it a try!! I mean, no it will not stop you from ever having to empty the pool but it buys you a LOT more time and uses from the water.

Can I Use Bleach In A Kiddie Pool
The short answer is YES, you can use bleach to help keep your kiddie pool clean. We recommend using very basic bleach. Be careful when using the Clorox brand, as many now contain additives such as scents. Use generic bleach or Clorox Regular Bleach. Use 1/8 cup for every 100 gallons in your kiddie pool.
Why Do Kiddie Pools Need Cleaning
Since backyard kiddie pools do not have a pump and filter or a skimmer like larger pools do, the water tends to get dirty and cloudy more often. Standing water is always going to get dirty, especially in the hot summer months, unless it is treated correctly. Tree debris, sunscreen buildup, and bugs in the water are just a few of the reasons that you need to clean kiddie pools often. Hopefully, with the tips you have learned in this article, you will have a cleaner kiddie pool this summer.

Totally Awesome Total Alkalinity
Total alkalinity is a very important measurement in your pool chemistry and one you should be testing several times per week. The optimal levels for TA are between 80 and 120 ppm .
Having alkaline substances in your pool water acts as a pH buffer to keep that delicate balance from being tossed about every time it rains or you have a pool party. And guess what alkaline substance is going to be your pool waters new best friend? You guessed it: borax.
How Level Should An Above Ground Pool Be
Now that you see how much water weighs, you can see the upmost importance of having level and stable ground prepared before putting up any above ground swimming pool.
This goes for all sizes of pools, maybe with the exception of baby pools that are one time uses that are drained after play time. If you have a small 12 foot round swimming pool that is 36 inches high it would require 2548 gallons of water to completely fill.
That means a 12 foot round pool filled with water would weigh over 20,000 pounds. With that kind of water weight if the ground is not precisely level the pool will not be able to feel evenly. Once water is being added water will have more weight on one side of the pool and it will push on the walls causing an unsafe and unpleasant looking swimming pool.

Keep Sunscreen Build Up Off The Sides
What do you do right before the kids head outside to splash? Cover them in sunscreen of course!
The damage caused to our skin from the sun and summer heat is well documented, so using the best sunscreen is important. No matter what sunscreen you use, you will surely see an oily film on the top of the water surface soon after the kids enter the pool.
There is nothing inherently bad about this, but over time you will see a build-up of sunscreen oils on the sides of the pool.
There are two ways to combat this build-up. You can either scrub it off when you are draining the pool, or prevent the build-up in the first place. To prevent the build-up, we recommend the Scum Ball which is a special sponge-like ball that absorbs the oil before it can build up on the sides!
- Helps eliminate scum line from body oils, lotions and make-up in your pool or spa
- Increases time between cleanings
- Specialty patented foam absorbs 43 times its weight in oils / lotions
- Includes 2 Scum Balls per pack
How Level Does My Water Need To Be
It is very important to get the level of your swimming pool as close to perfect as possible during installation. This is hard to do with a naked eye. One method is to use long 2 by 4s and a level to help accomplish this.
If you do not take the time to get this right the first time, you might have to drain and start over once your pool is halfway filled and you notice the water level is off by too much.
INYO Pools recommends that you drain the pool and start over if the water is more than 3 inches off once filled. This is too much weight on one side of your swimming pools walls and can cause sidewall failures as well as injury if not fixed.
|1/4 Off Level|
|Still Ok. It may start to be more noticeable from the outside of the pool.|
|2 Off Level||Fair. Your pool should be fine, however it will be noticeable by guests and will not look as glamorous as a level swimming pool would. Structural damage to your pool is unlikely.|
|2.5 Off Level||Anything above 2 1/2 to 3 inches off I would recommend draining, re-leveling and adding water again. Especially over 3 inches. This is when the weight of the water can begin to cause danger to people and damage to your swimming pool.|

Caring For Your Planter
The fastest way to kill growing seeds is to let them dry out. In the early stages of germination, keep the soil moist at all times. As the vegetables sprout and get larger, you can gradually reduce watering somewhat. Generally speaking, most plants need about 1 inch of water each week, through combined rainwater and irrigation. Raised planters, however, can dry out fairly quickly, so make sure to keep an eye on the plants.
- You may need to thin the sprouted seedlings after they get their first set of full leaves. Follow the space recommendations on your seed packets.
- If you are growing basil, once the plants are about 4 to 6 inches tall, let the soil dry out a bit between waterings this is an herb that likes somewhat arid conditions.
- Go easy on the fertilizer if you are growing herbs, as they will be most flavorful if the soil is somewhat poor in nutrients. Fruiting vegetables such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and zucchini, on the other hand, will benefit from feeding every month or so.
What Can Borax Do For My Pool
Not only is borax an inexpensive and extremely useful product to have around the house, but its also been shown to be a champ in the backyard as well. Who would have thought that adding some borax to your pool could be so beneficial?
- Increase the pH of your pool water if things have gotten too acidic
- Act as a buffer for your pH, protecting your sanitizer levels
- Prevent algae and bacteria growth

What Exactly Is A Kiddie Pool
Plastic inflatable pools come in all shapes and sizes, from super-tiny setups with barely enough room for two toddlers to enormous, semi-permanent pools that require a filter, chemicals, a large patch of flat land for setup, and ample storage space for the off-season. For this piece, were focusing specifically on smaller portable pools that hold up to 170 gallons or less because theyre typically cheaper, smaller, and easier to maintain than their behemoth counterparts.
Most inflatable plastic kiddie pools are made of polyvinyl chloride, commonly referred to as PVC or vinyl, which can be really difficult to recycle. And because most portable pools dont last beyond the summer , they often get chucked into the garbage.
If youd like to steer clear of vinyl kiddie pools altogether, a pool made of hard plastic is a good alternative. Because theyre not inflatable, durable plastic pools will last longer than their flimsier counterparts. With the right maintenance, they can last a few summers before they need to be replaced.
Inflatable pools quickly end up in the landfill, at least the kiddie kind, says senior editor Kalee Thompson. The advice Id give? Go to your local hardware store and pay $20 for the hard plastic one with fish on it.
