Will Public Pools Open At All This Summer Metro Cities Weigh Their Options

Gov. Laura Kelly specifically mentioned that public pools would be allowed to open ‘at or around’ Memorial Day. She used to work for the Kansas Parks and Recreations so she understands how important pools are. According to the phasing, Public Pools are set to open as part of Phase 2, or no earlier than May 18.

COVID-19 cannot be communicated in the water but it can be communicated in air, just like it could in a park or in a store or in a restaurant. There is no reason that visitors to a pool cannot social distance in the same manner as they would going to play golf.

So…will pools open this summer? Of course they will.

When Is The Best Time To Open My Swimming Pool

Play St. Louis: Ballwin Pointe Indoor Pool, Ballwin

Well, it’s that time of year again, folks. And after the winter we had here in Virginia, I say good riddance!

But with the warmer weather, the swimming bug’ will soon be affecting all of us.

In fact, as I write this article and sit in my car at a parking lot in Yorktown, Virginia, the temperature outside is about 93°F degrees on April 7. Wow, now that’s what I call skipping spring!

But during this time of year, many pool owners debate about when they should open their pools. When is too early? When is too late?

This is a legitimate concern, and this article will discuss my thoughts on the matter.

This is my general, all-encompassing rule of thumb:

When the temperature is consistently above 70 degrees during the day, it’s time to open the pool.

Why so early, you ask? Well, let me give you 5 main reasons:

Saint Louis Science Center June 20

The Saint Louis Science Center will reopen on June 20. It posted on its website that the science center team has been working closely with local authorities, health officials and the City of St. Louis as it moves forward with reopening.

New safety measures and operating guidelines will include limited occupancy, timed ticket reservations and masks to be required for guests ages 9 and above, as well as all employees, vendors and contractors. Read more here.

Lake Of The Woods Pool Schedule

Notice: Pool schedule subject to change to comply with local health orders.

Notice: Due to an estimated shortfall in revenue needed to cover operating costs, Little Mates Cove will not open in 2021. As the department evaluated all outdoor pool operations, factors including cost of maintenance, infrastructure condition, and number of staff needed to safely operate the facility, were all taken into consideration.

Unfortunately, Little Mates Cove has some structural issues and combined with the high number of staff needed to maintain and operate the facility, the facility was not funded for the 2021 swim season. This will allow time for staff to develop a budget and future plan on what it will take to open the pool in the future.

Heres Where To Find A Public Swimming Pool Near You

Compiled by St. Louis Post-Dispatch staff

Laurie Skrivan / St. Louis Post-Dispatch

With almost all area public pools opening for the season, most on Memorial Day weekend, the kickoff to summer 2021 almost looks normal.

    Almost.

Some pools that open for the summer are requiring reservations, such as Freeburg and Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, and some, including pools in St. Charles, Union and Ballwin, are opening to residents and nonresidents after being more restrictive last year.

Some cities took the time closed last year to make improvements, such as new climbing walls at Manchester Aquatic Center and a FlowRider surfing feature, a Cardinals-themed kids area and other improvements at Maryland Heights Aquaport. The city of Washington, Missouri, overhauled its Agnes Nolting Aquatic Complex, with a zero-entry pool with a water playground, climbing wall, open flume slide and diving boards.

Be prepared to sit 6 feet apart on the pool deck or while standing in line for a slide, and check for specific safety rules before you visit.
