While youre looking for signs of corrosion, look for other signs of damage to component wiring, such as breaks or char marks. Also check all connections to ensure theyre snug.
Wiring Short: When two wires touch but theyre not supposed to, a surge of power causes your breaker to trip. This can also happen when a hot wire touches a ground wire. Not only will it trip your hot tub breaker, but it can even start a fire. Wires can accidentally touch each other in this manner if youve moved your spa, done work inside the cabinet, or if you have a pest.You can narrow down the offending wires by disconnecting each spa component one at a time. Flip the breaker and see if it trips. When it trips, youve found the misbehaving component. Start inspecting the wiring for that component.If the wires are touching because one came loose, you can reconnect it and reset your hot tub breaker. Signs of damage or signs of a mouse nest mean you should be looking closely for more extensive problems, such as chewed wires. In those instances you might need to replace wires and connectors.

My Hot Tub Is Intermittently Tripping The Breaker It Goes

Most spas have a 50 amp double pole circuit breaker with GFCI protection. The easiest way to tell if your breaker is GFCI protected is that the breaker will have a little test button mounted to the front of the breaker.
GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt. This is there to protect the spa users from electrical ground faults which could cause a problem if it becomes present in any of the electrical equipment connected to the Control Box being used in your spa.
The reason I’m explaining what a GFCI breaker does is to go a step further based on the diagnoses of your “hot tub tech”.
If the two speed pump motor is running for more than two hours, heating up, then tripping the breaker, this could mean that over time the motor is allowing electrical current to pass to ground, causing the fault, which the breaker will sense and then shutting down. Once the motor sits for a while and cools down, the fault will clear until it heats up and then does it again.
I am assuming you do have this type of GFCI breaker. However, if you just have a regular non-gfci breaker, it could also be possible that the pump motor is overloading after running for more than two hours, and tripping because of high current draw.
If the pump is tripping for any of the mentioned reasons, the only fix for it is to replace the pump/motor.

Your local hardware store will likely have replacement GFCIs and components for sale, or you can order them online. If youre not certain which model or configuration to purchase, talk to a repair professional or licensed electrician. Theyll also have experience diagnosing and repairing similar problems and may be able to offer repair services or advice.
A GFCI circuit breaker that trips constantly is at best a nuisance, and could be an indication of a potentially hazardous situation with your hot tub. Armed with a little knowledge, you should be able to diagnose the problem with your GFCI and find a way to fix it, either by repairing it yourself or by calling upon the knowledge and services of your hot tub dealer or a licensed electrician. A tripped GFCI can be frustrating, but it doesnt have to get in the way of your enjoyment of your hot tub.

- The pump is overheating, which prevents the circuit breaker from resetting.
- Your pumps GFCI needs to be reset before the connected breaker can reset.

- The bus bar disconnected from the breaker, which prevented it from supplying any electricity.
Pool pump breakers can usually be reset, but that doesnt mean theyre without fault. A malfunctioning or overloaded breaker can turn on and off randomly.

Moisture In Your Hot Tub Breaker Box
Pop open the breaker box, shine the flashlight around in there, and see if you find any moisture inside. Rainwater, splashout, or flooding can introduce enough dampness to flip a hot tub GFCI.
The solution may be as easy as drying the inside of the breaker box with your towel, turning a fan or dehumidifier on near your outlet, and resetting the breaker once dry.
If the breaker flips even after it appears dry, you may need more extensive troubleshooting. If the breaker is encountering moisture often, you may need to replace the receptacle itself or move it farther from the spa.

A little bit of moisture in your circuit breakers control box is enough to turn off its switch. This is actually an incredibly important function to protect the breaker and the hot tub from the damage that water can cause.
All you need to do is conduct a thorough sweep in the breaker box to find out if moisture is present. Remember to turn off the main electrical supply before you do your inspection. If you find any moisture, use a towel or any absorbent cloth. To make sure its really dry, you can run a fan or dehumidifier near the outlet as well. Then you can proceed to reset the breaker.
Its a good idea to keep your breaker from getting wet in the first place to avoid having to deal with this issue again. To prevent moisture from getting into the panel, make sure that the cables are sealed tight and the rubber seal is intact. If everythings dry and the breaker still flips, it might be necessary to replace the receptacle.
