How To Prevent Water Bugs In A Pool

How to Get Rid of Swimming Pool Algae

Good cleaning habits and proper chemistry are the best way to deter water bugs from taking up residence in your swimming pool. These critters only show up when there is food, so taking steps to make conditions less favorable for algae and other microorganisms to grow in your pool is your best line of defense.

Algaecides are not typically necessary, but every environment is different. If you struggle to keep the algae out of your pool, then adding an algaecide to your water is a viable option to maintain a bug-free environment.

Use Flocculant To Clear Up The Algae

Youve disarmed the enemy , but its presence still lingers.

The best way to clear out the rest of the pool algae is to use a pool flocculant.

Flocculants are normally used to clear up cloudy white swimming pools. They work by clumping particles together and sinking them to the bottom of your pool making it easier for you to clean up and filter out.

Use 1 2 treatments of pool flocculant depending on the severity of the pool algae. After adding it to your pool, give the flocculant some time to settle in.

Once you see the algae sinking to the bottom, its time to finish the job.

Does Leaving A Pool Cover On Cause Algae

In a properly sanitized pool with chemically balanced water leaving a pool cover on will not cause algae to flourish. When your pool becomes chemically unbalanced and the sanitizer level falls algae will begin to grow. However, algae is known to develop resistance to normal levels of chlorine so you need to frequently shock your pool to prevent algae multiplying.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Algae cells always exist in water, so if youre not on top of chlorine dosage, you can well expect algae to take advantage of that! Key prevention tips include making sure your water is always balanced properly with pH, calcium, cyanuric acid and alkalinity. Be sure to keep the chlorine levels between 1.0-2.0 ppm and regularly shock. Regularly dosing with algaecide also helps keep algae at bay.

If your filter is inadequate , you can not only create, but aggravate an algae problem. Your filter should be operating so that the entire contents of the pools water has been filtered at least once every 24 hours. Make sure your filter is appropriate for your pool size, as well as checking your filters regularly. Be sure to backwash it and replace at 5-8 year intervals or as needed.

Equally circulation must be thorough. Flow patterns must cover the entire pool, so check that the whole pool looks even in terms of cleanliness. An automatic pool cleaner or a regular pool service like the ones Town & Country Surrey Swimming Pools offer is a good solution for older pools.

Why Pollen In Your Pool Is Bad News

This isnt to say pollen cant hurt your pool.

If its left long enough, pollen can clog up your filtration system and will also upset your pool water chemistry. This will require you to rebalance the pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels as pollen contains bacteria, phosphates, and other organic pollutants.

Cleaning out the filtration system can be a chore as well, as the pool filter will need to be cleaned, rinsed, or even fully replaced, and backwashing may also have to be done.

Clusters Of Ants In Pool Why Does It Happen

Ants can infest your pool anytime during the year. However, its the spring and summer months when the ants are most active.

Its during these months, and after heavy rains, youd observe clusters of ants in your pool.

Youll find chunks of floating ants in the middle of the pool, near the skimmer and the pool return jets.

The worst part? That can also mean that ants have also infested the pool pumps and filters.

Youll find out the reasons for clusters of ants in your pool in a minute, but first, lets find out what types of ants infest swimming pools.

There are three types of ants that youd find in your pool. These are the big head black carpenter ants, tiny red ants, which are also known as fire ants, and the flying ants with wings.

Flying ants with wings are sexually mature ants. Ants develop wings when theyre about to mate.

After mating, they shed their wings and establish a new colony where they can lay eggs.

Thats a different story altogether.

For now, lets get into the reasons for these clumps of ants floating in your pool.

Algae In Your Swimming Pool Why It Happens & How To Fix It

Surrey swimming pool owners will be aware that owning a pool requires a lot more attention and knowledge than simply surface cleaning with a large net. One of the most common naturally occurring problems we see, is algae.

Above Ground Pool Removal Costs

Pools that live above the ground have a relatively simple process for teardown, averaging $2,700. However, if there is an intricate deck or landscaping attached or near the pool, those elements might warrant removal or redesign as well. For the pool itself, the elimination will involve:

  • Draining it with a sewer pump.
  • Unscrewing and unbolting the walls before tearing them apart with a hand tool.
  • Renting a dumpster or hiring a crew to haul away the debris.
  • Redesigning the space left behind, either with landscaping or a new structure like a patio. Building a deck costs most homeowners about $7,700.

If this type of project isn’t new to you, you may be able to complete at least part of the process yourself and hire a pro to tackle anything beyond your abilities or comfort.

What In The World Are Water Bugs

Unsurprisingly, given the name, water bugs are insects that live in water.

They look a bit like cockroaches with their flat, oval-shaped bodies and antennae, so people sometimes get them confused.

Fortunately, there are a couple of ways to tell them apart. Cockroaches are a normally lighter brown color, but water bugs are very dark brown or black, as well as having less prominent antennae.

Water bugs are also normally larger than cockroaches, often 3 times as large. American cockroaches can be a similar size to water bugs, and you can identify the American cockroach from the figure-eight pattern on the back of its head.

There are a few different types of bugs that people commonly refer to as water bugs, but the two most common types to find in your swimming pool are:

Use A Liquid Dish Detergent

Getting Rid of Algae In Your Swimming Pool

Dish soap and water in a spray bottle make an excellent natural bug repellant and it works great for killing water bugs, as it changes the surface tension of the water so the bugs cant float on the water.

You can use this spray directly on water bugs to kill them and you can also spray a little around the perimeter of your pool to prevent them. But this way, if they do land in your pool, it will kill them and they can then be skimmed out.

Types Of Beetles Most Commonly Found In Swimming Pools

Although you could technically find any type of insect in your pool, the following beetles are among some of the most commonly found in pools. These include Japanese beetles, Dicing beetles, Whirligig beetles, and other types of water beetles. Most of these beetles can swim and thrive in water environments. The only exception to this on our list is Japanese beetles.

Although Japanese beetles are not meant to be in water and are usually drowned when we find them inside of our swimming pools, they are such a common garden pest that they are commonly found in pools. These beetles almost always end up there by mistake.

How Do You Keep Them From Returning

Its a two-pronged approach: Clean your pool on a regular basis, and keep your chlorine level where its supposed to be. This will keep algae out of your pool, which, in turn, will keep the water boatmen out as well.

You may see other advice that says to use an algaecide for this purpose. Our view is, algaecide isnt necessary if you maintain proper pool chemistry, keep sanitizer levels where they should be, and shock your pool on a regular basis.

If algae cant grow in your pool, theres nothing for the water boatmen to eat, and theyll go somewhere else, never to darken your pool steps again.

NOTE: For a really quick fix for keeping bugs from returning, just use a solar pool cover on your pool when youre not using it. The cover floats on top of the pools so bugs cant.

What Do They Look Like

Water boatmen are oval-shaped, and usually brown or greenish-brown in color. They have large eyes. They usually dont grow more than ½ an inch long.

Their rear-most legs are longer than the others, and are fringed with hairs that help it stay afloat and paddle, hence their name. Those legs usually extend forward, past the second set of legs.

They also have wings, and yes, they can and do fly.

Convert To Garden Space

If the space is destined to become a garden plot, removal of the pool itself may not be necessary, but its not as simple as filling the pool with soil. Holes must be drilled in the bottom of the pool to allow for drainage. The soil required can be costly and should be effectively compacted to keep your garden plot for sinking over time. To visually eliminate evidence of the pool, the decking and top few feet of the pool itself may be removed and buried. Check and see if permits are required before undertaking this conversion and consider professional assistance. Although the pool may become an unseen memory, expect to disclose its presence when selling the property.

What Are Water Bugs

Remove Stains From Pool in 60 seconds

There are two common types of water bugs that you’ll probably find in your pool, and rest assuredthey are not roaches!

  • Water boatmen: Water boatmen are slim, oval bugs with oar-like back legs that they swim with. Their food sources are all the gross stuff you try to keep out of your pool like algae and mosquito larvae.
  • Back swimmers: These bugs swim on their backs and have longer legs than water boatmen, but they are still oar-like. These usually skim the surface of the water in long strides and feed off of other insects, like water boatmen. Back swimmers, unlike water boatmen, will bite you if handled.

Ants Around Swimming Pool + How To Kill Them

Ants are drawn to the pool in large numbers especially in hot weather because they need water for them to remain moist. Naturally, they are often seen taking water because most ants can draw water from what they eat. However, ants get desperate when it gets extra hot, and they may also fall into the pool while trying to get water.

To get rid of ants around the swimming pool, mop the infested area with soapy water and let it dry. Then combine equal parts of white vinegar and hot water and spray it on the ant nests and trails. Increase cleaning intervals to 2-3 times a day and avoid food or drinks which can attract ants by the pool.

Flying ants swarm around pools during their mating seasons. They are attracted by the water reflections and moisture. Ants do not have perfect eyesight thus they are drawn to open pools as a result of the clear light that mirrored on the surface. They end up in the water and once their wings get wet, they cannot fly out.
